Sunday, September 1, 2013. Castillo de San Marcos National Monument. Castillo de San Marcos is a former military fort sitting on about 20 acres by which construction first began in 1672. This fort is perched on the shore of Matanzas Bay on the East side of town. It's easy to find and within walking distance of the vibrant downtown shops and restaurants.
