A weblog to record the developement of a wildlife friendly garden. Thursday, May 31, 2007. Steve Bender and Felder Rushing. It was fun to read the stories about how common southern plants are passed along between family members, friends and any visiting gardener that shows an interest . For it seems that is all it takes. An admiring comment about any easily propagated plant and you are sure to get an offer of a piece or a bit of seed to take with you when you go. Click on picture to enlarge . Bender and ...

A weblog to record the developement of a wildlife friendly garden. Friday, February 23, 2007. Birds will come . an urban habitat garden. When first beginning to garden the only birds I seemed to see were blackbirds, sparrows and maybe a robin or two. That has changed dramatically over the years as I have learned to feed the birds. Not with a typical bird feeder but through the garden itself. The thrush running in and out from under shrubs picking through leaf litter is also looking for a meal. Living wit...

A weblog to record the developement of a wildlife friendly garden. Tuesday, October 31, 2006. Green and grey, red and gold, light and shadow, the changes in the garden brought on by lower light levels and cooler temperatures lure us out to admire nature's artistic hand. Close to the earth enjoying soil warmer than the air and radiated heat from stones and pathways many plants take advantage of micro-climates created by lush planting and hardscape. Combinations overlooked in summer suddenly stand out.

Seems Chicago is not the only place experiencing the current Red Admiral largess. Red Admiral western New York. Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta) do not survive northern harsh winters so only fly once a season in the north then migrate south where they can have two or three broods a year then over winter in larval stage. Echinacea purpurea can always be counted on for a show of pollinators and birds. American Goldfinches seem to prefer the purple coneflower early before seeds have had a chance to mature. The goldfinches are loud, messy and joyful, singing and flying and searching out food. Since I am a horrrible photographer here is a link to the site of many great pictures. Posted by Gloria at 1:25 PM.

A weblog to record the developement of a wildlife friendly garden. Monday, April 23, 2007. Ornamental and native grass in the habitat garden. Early in the year as the grass emerges bulbs and spring flowers have little visual competition. As the weather heats up the still low clumps of grass grow slowly forming a groundcover around summer flowers giving a softened merging of color and shape that moves with the wind. In late summer and fall the grass dominates the show both in mass and color. Grass provide...

A weblog to record the developement of a wildlife friendly garden. Sunday, December 31, 2006. Beneficial Insects and Native Plants. Beneficial insect pages give information. Plant pages give pictures and graphs. This is of course of interest mainly to midwestern growers, but I think give a good idea of how natives to an area can be of benefit. Spend some time going through the pages it is very interesting. What do "small," "medium" and "large" numbers mean? Posted by Gloria at 10:07 PM. Links to this post.
