The word on worms « Native Seedling

https://nativeseedling.wordpress.com/2015/08/11/the-word-on-worms

The blog of Adkins Arboretum. The word on worms. As someone who sunburns easily, I have empathy for earthworms. I used to think that these squiggly pink charmers emerged from the earth on rainy days to avoid drowning in soggy soil. Not so! As it turns out, rainy, cloudy days are the only days worms. Without moisture, the slimy coating that protects worms will dry out. To sum it up, a sunny day equals doomsday for our earthworm friends. Photo courtesy of Fir0002/Flagstaffotos. The blog of Adkins Arboretum. On Becoming a Maryland Master Naturalist. Chapter Nine The Early Bird Gets the Worm [Farm]. Technically called vermicomposting, worm composting can be done in a lovely three-layer composter, such as Laura brought, or in a simpler wooden box with a screened top (to keep the cats out and the worms in, in my household). Laura recommended a book called. Worms Eat My Garbage. By Mary Appelhof. Laura ordered her red wriggler worms from Uncle Jim’s Worm Farm. We also learned about ...

Ghosts rise from forest duff « Native Seedling

https://nativeseedling.wordpress.com/2015/07/21/ghosts-rise-from-forest-duff

The blog of Adkins Arboretum. Ghosts rise from forest duff. A wonderfully informative post (and great photos) from David Haskell, speaker at the Arboretum’s 2013 fall symposium. Is now flowering in shaded woodlands. The species is also known as Indian pipe or corpse plant. Each stem is about finger-high and has a nodding flower at its tip. The plant’s pallor tells the story of its peculiar feeding methods. Rather than using pigments to gather sunlight, the roots are sheathed with fungi. Enter your email ...

Metamorphosis « Native Seedling

https://nativeseedling.wordpress.com/2015/07/23/metamorphosis

The blog of Adkins Arboretum. Photo by Richard Rohlfing. When my husband and I were first dating, I taught French in the public school system, and his co-workers would refer to me as the French madam. With marriage and a move, I traded my windowless foreign language classroom for the Arboretum’s four hundred acres. My family grew, and so did my commitment to environmental education. It’s the frog lady! Ghosts rise from forest duff. Become a master naturalist. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. You are commentin...
