Walking Northern Spain

Wednesday, April 7, 2010. Summary of our Tour of Northern Spain. This was our most ambitious tour so far. We had gained a lot of confidence from self drive holiday of the previous year to Portugal and Spain. Many of the battlefields we explored then were return visits to ones we had seen with Holts Tours. However this time it would all be new. Burgos was the only one which was really easy. The castle overlooks the city, and is easy to find. From the castle it is easy to walk the area of the siege. I coul...

Walking Napoleonic Battlefields: December 2010

http://walkingnapoleonicbattlefields.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 22 December 2010. Vobarno is a small and very attractive town in the mountains on the western side of Lake Garda. On 4 August 1796 it was the scene of desperate fighting as the retreating Austrians tried to capture the bridge over the river Chise. We spent a day visiting the town on 6 September 2000. Our visit is covered at. Http:/ napoleoninitaly.blogspot.com/. Labels: 08 - Napoleon in Italy. Tuesday, 14 December 2010. On 4 August Bonaparte was present in the castle which was held by 1000 men.

Walking Napoleonic Battlefields: April 2011

http://walkingnapoleonicbattlefields.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 26 April 2011. We followed the path beyond the buildings, eventually leading downhill to the small church overlooking the village of Augezd, an the site of the famous Satschen ponds. At the end of the battle the allied army retreated over the frozen ponds. Napoleon positioned a battery of artillery near this church and ordered it to fire on the ice. He claimed in his Bulletin that 20,000 allied troops had drowned here. Labels: 09 - Aspern and Austerlitz. Tuesday, 19 April 2011. We were fortunate...

Walking Napoleonic Battlefields: February 2011

http://walkingnapoleonicbattlefields.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 22 February 2011. We were delighted to discover that our hotel in Aspern was within 100 yards of the famous church, and only about a mile to Lobau Island. Our bikes were not ready when we arrived at the hotel, so we set off to explore Lobau Island on foot. It was a very hot afternoon, and we were quite warm and glowing by the time we arrived. Poor Jan did not know where to look. We drank our beer and left in haste. Labels: 09 - Aspern and Austerlitz. Wednesday, 16 February 2011. Our first visit ...

Tuesday, 3 May 2011. On our last day at Austerlitz we only had a few hours before we had to drive to Vienna and the flight back to UK. Just long enough to visit Schlapanitz. Its a short walk from the monument marking Napoleon's command post on Zuran Hill to the small town of Schlapanitz. Labels: 09 - Aspern and Austerlitz. Walking the Pyrenees: Ainhoa Redoubt and Bridge at Amotz

http://walkingpyrenees.blogspot.com/2010/06/ainhoa-redoubt-and-bridge-at-amotz.html

Wednesday, June 2, 2010. Ainhoa Redoubt and Bridge at Amotz. Sunday 30 June 1996. At last a dry, if cloudy, day. We decided to explore the area from the bridge at Amotz to the redoubts above the. This bridge spans the river Nivelle and carried the only lateral communications between the left and right sections of the French army. Today the bridge is closed to motor traffic and overgrown with grass and weeds. We followed the obvious road, but found it led us in the wrong direction. All were completely ove...

Walking Portugal and Spain One: Talavera

http://walkingportugalandspain.blogspot.com/2009/08/talavera.html

Walking Portugal and Spain One. Monday, August 17, 2009. The battle of Talavera. Was fought on 27 and 28 July 1809. It should be an easy battlefield to find and explore, because as you can see from the map above it runs between. The town of Talavera. And the mountains to the north. Also there appears to be a road running directly to the mountains. However there is now a large motorway through the centre of the battlefield and much of what is left is now private land. The bridge over the river Albereche.

Walking the Pyrenees: The Bayonet Ridge

http://walkingpyrenees.blogspot.com/2010/06/bayonet-ridge.html

Wednesday, June 16, 2010. Tuesday 2 July 1996. Overcast skies yet again. We had planned to drive to Orthez, but the dismal weather decided us to postpone the 65 mile journey in the hope of better weather. Instead we decided to return to Vera and explore the Bayonet Ridge again. The ridge is dominated by a collection of duty free shops, with a large car park and plenty of places to eat and drink. The hill in the background is Le Grande Rhune. Despite our waterproofs we had to seek shelter in a small cave.

Walking Portugal and Spain One: July 2009

http://walkingportugalandspain.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html

Walking Portugal and Spain One. Saturday, July 25, 2009. The bridge over the river Coa is about a mile from Almeida. You go down a steep and curving road and cross the dry river bed of the Coa on a new road bridge. However a few hundred yards away is the original bridge, where Crauford almost lost the Light Division on that fateful morning of 24th July 1810. It was not a battle, only a Combat of the Coa. It could easily have resulted in the destruction of the famous Light Division. There was much...Like ...

Walking Portugal and Spain One. Tuesday, August 25, 2009. Our last night was spent in. Lovely hotel, like all of the rest, and excellent location – right in the centre of the city. However we were both too tired to take advantage after such a hectic week. Holts Battlefield Tours are not a cheap way to visit battlefields, but I must admit that our tour from 21 to 28 October 1991 was definitely very good value for money. We had visited the cities of. Not bad for 8 days, which included flying to. We were no...

Walking Portugal and Spain One. Saturday, July 18, 2009. Is to Portugal what Cuidad. This is the same explosion which Sharpe escaped by hiding in a bread oven in Sharpes. Is only a few miles from Cuidad. Rodrigo. It is a slightly larger fortress, and even better preserved, as can be seen from the photograph above. However whereas Cuidad.
