On 4 August 1796 it was the scene of desperate fighting as the retreating Austrians tried to capture the bridge over the river Chise. We spent a day visiting the town on 6 September 2000. Tuesday, 26 April 2011. We followed the path beyond the buildings, eventually leading downhill to the small church overlooking the village of Augezd, an the site of the famous Satschen ponds. At the end of the battle the allied army retreated over the frozen ponds. Napoleon positioned a battery of artillery near this church and ordered it to fire on the ice. Tuesday, 22 February 2011. We were delighted to discover that our hotel in Aspern was within 100 yards of the famous church, and only about a mile to Lobau Island. Our bikes were not ready when we arrived at the hotel, so we set off to explore Lobau Island on foot. It was a very hot afternoon, and we were quite warm and glowing by the time we arrived. Walking Portugal and Spain One. Monday, August 17, 2009. The battle of Talavera. Was fought on 27 and 28 July 1809. It should be an easy battlefield to find and explore, because as you can see from the map above it runs between. The town of Talavera. And the mountains to the north. Also there appears to be a road running directly to the mountains. However there is now a large motorway through the centre of the battlefield and much of what is left is now private land. Wednesday, June 16, 2010. Tuesday 2 July 1996. Overcast skies yet again. We had planned to drive to Orthez, but the dismal weather decided us to postpone the 65 mile journey in the hope of better weather. Instead we decided to return to Vera and explore the Bayonet Ridge again. The ridge is dominated by a collection of duty free shops, with a large car park and plenty of places to eat and drink. The hill in the background is Le Grande Rhune. Despite our waterproofs we had to seek shelter in a small cave.

You go down a steep and curving road and cross the dry river bed of the Coa on a new road bridge. However a few hundred yards away is the original bridge, where Crauford almost lost the Light Division on that fateful morning of 24th July 1810. It was not a battle, only a Combat of the Coa.
