North Shields Lighthouses, River Tyne. Located at at the Fish Quay on the banks of the River Tyne at North Shields these lights act as a navigational aid to ships entering the River Tyne. They were built in the 19th century and replace earlier lights at the same location. The first photo on this page shows both lights seen from Tynemouth in early morning sun (taken with a very long lens). In the second view of both lights taken from North Shields Fish Quay a small sailing ship is tied up at the quayside.

Coquet Island Lighthouse, Northumbrian Coast. This lighthouse is situated on Coquet island which lies just off the Northumberland Coast at Amble. Built in 1841 it is active with a red flashing light. One of it's keepers was the older brother of local heroine Grace Darling who used to visit home on the island by rowing boat. Boat trips around the island can be taken from Amble Harbour. In the first photo below the island is seen in late evening sunshine. From North to South. North Shields (River Tyne).

Souter Lighthouse South Shields. Souter Lighthouse is located on cliff tops just south of the River Tyne. Opened in 1871 the lighthouse is famous as being the worlds first electric powered lighthouse. It is still operational and used by ships approaching the Rivers Tyne and Wear. It is also a museum and can be visited by the public. In the first photo below, the lighthouse can be seen in it's walled enclosure with the Keepers house and fog horns. From North to South. Blyth East Pier Lighthouse, Northumbrian Coast. This Lighthouse is at the end of the East Pier at Blyth in Northumberland. It was built in 1907 and aids ships entering the River Blyth and Blyth Harbour. The first two photos below include one of the wind turbines built on the pier, after which it became closed to the public. In the second two photos the lighthouse is seen in close-up views taken from the west pier. The last three photos are views of the lighthouse in rough seas, at sunrise and after sunset.

Herd Groyne Lighthouse, River Tyne, South Shields. This very unusual lighthouse resembling a 1940's sci-fi movie space craft is located on a small groyne in the river mouth at South Shields. It was built in 1882 and was at the mouth of the river before the north and south piers were built. It still acts as a navigational aid to ships entering the River Tyne. The next three photos were taken from tynemouth Pier on a sunny morning showing a tug and two small ships passing the light. From North to South.
