Commentary on Political Economy and Miscellany. Monthly Archives: May 2015. Irish economy has a spring in its step. May 22, 2015. Ireland’s economic winter of discontent has given way to the green shoots of spring. While the factor 50 isn’t yet flowing in all regions of the country, and the post-2008 bust still casts a long shadow on certain cohorts of the population, there is a sense that summer is coming. On 28 May, the government launched its spring statement. Continue reading →. RT @ Neil Irwin.

Voice of the Traveller. Budget 2014: Don't Just Read the Label, Look inside the Tin. So, Fine Gael has caved in to Labour. There will now be only 2.5 billion in fiscal adjustments (read: austerity), not 3.1 billion. A victory for the junior partner or a necessary concession given the general austerity fatigue; regardless the reason, less cuts and taxes. But how can we be sure? Given what has happened over the last two budgets, I would urge caution. By Michael Taft. First published on Notes on the Front.

Fiche Focal ...: January 2010
http://fichefocal.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html
Wednesday 27 January 2010. Falling out of Love with Politics. I sat up half the night on April 9th 1992, waiting on the very tight British election to be called. It was supposed to be a narrow but comfortable win for Labour after thirteen years of Conservative rule. But in the end, it went to the wire and Labour lost. Eventually I had to admit to myself that I'm not really a political animal and that my interest is more in the theory than the practice! Regarding the theory - I am still fascinated by the ...

Friday 27 May 2011. Cuairt na Banríona: Éire agus Sasana. Táimid ag leanstan próiseas na síochána le fada an lá: an Comhaontú Angla-Éireannach 1985; sos-chogadh an IRA 1994; Comhaontú Aoine an Chéasta 1998; díchoimisiúnú airm an IRA 2005, Paisley agus McGuinness mar chéad aire agus mar leas-chéad aire 2007. Monday 29 June 2009. Little Boy Time: Childhood under Attack. Maybe it's part of that nostaligia thing that I'm going through, these vivid imaginings of episodes and relationships from my childhood that I'm denying has anything to do with the concept of a mid life crisis! In a beautiful piece Chabon talks about one essential component of childhood - the freedom to head off, through streets or woods, with others or alone, every or most days, and just conduct a little adventure. This aspect of childhoo...

Wednesday 26 May 2010. Bord Gáis Taking the Piss. All I needed was to have my gas metre moved by a couple of yards. There was nothing complicated - just a trench and a short pipe. So I phoned Bord Gáis. I gasped when the agent told me how much it would cost: a thousand euro! I thought I had misheard and asked again. Yes, a thousand euro, said the agent. I took a minute to recompose myself, took a deep breath, then, knowing I had no choice if I wanted my porch built, I begrudgingly agreed. But anyway on t...
Fiche Focal ...: FG wrong on Leaving Cert Irish
http://fichefocal.blogspot.com/2010/06/fg-wrong-on-leaving-cert-irish.html
Monday 14 June 2010. FG wrong on Leaving Cert Irish. The position of Irish in the school curriculum is central to the larger question of whether the state - and by extension this nation - ought to preserve or promote the first official tongue. The cause of the language is very dear to my own heart, and therefore I feel very strongly that this is an important issue. When people who struggle with the language are given the option, they will opt out, and the result will be an evaporation of the crucial fami...

Notes on the Fridge. The magnet that holds all of life's notable moments. A Note About Me. Saturday, June 6, 2015. Not your normal, it’s been two hours since my last donut kind of hungry. I long for that kind of hunger. I guess I should explain. I am taking a new “lifestyle” for a spin. No I haven’t sold everything and moved to the Appalachian Mountains to live off the grid. It’s way worse than that. I have gone Paleo. I would have defined it as cavemen crazy talk, but today…it is my life. Day 4 – ...

Notes on the Globe. Sunday, November 11, 2012. This post was originally published. By the Interfaith Youth Core. On April 28, 2011. The US. is a large, democratic society with great religious diversity, and the commitment to religious freedom is a hallmark of America’s greatness. If American citizens can demonstrate consistent and positive interaction among America’s many religious communities we can serve as a model of interfaith cooperation for other nations. Current events seem to have many people in a spin. If it's not about the imploding U.S. economy, it's about the constant loss of lives in Iraq and Afghanistan, or about some grave threat from one of America's 'enemies.'. One of the things that Christians can be quite sure about is that our LORD and Savior Jesus the Christ. He will live and rule amon...
