litblog: Neglect
http://responsetotexts.blogspot.com/2010/08/neglect.html
Making life my literature. Saturday, August 21, 2010. The following chart shows my laptop battery charge over exactly two weeks of standard use. One square is 14 hours. The flatter areas are when the laptop is asleep. Red, it's asleep unplugged in my desk drawer; blue, it's asleep plugged in on my desk (usually to recharge overnight). Things have changed a lot from when all my useful work was done on my laptop. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Wellington, New Zealand. View my complete profile.

Graduate Rhapsody [closed]: I'm a-singin' you the song, but I can't sing enough
http://undergrad-rhapsody.blogspot.com/2009/12/im-singin-you-song-but-i-cant-sing.html
Sunday, December 6, 2009. I'm a-singin' you the song, but I can't sing enough. Until now I've kept my lecturers' full names out of this blog, and during Honours, where the lecturer pool is so small, I've even suppressed their first names. Today I break that rule for the first and only time. Today I honour the special lecturers who really made a difference to me during my six years at university. Labels: artist: Bob Dylan. Sunday, November 15, 2009. That's funny, it looks as if I never got around to posting this when I wrote it in early November. After my midyear exams I summarised, for each course, the expected number of students answering each possible set of exam questions. Given by the quotient of the number of students and the number of possible exams in that course. You can use $ LaTeX$ here if you like. litblog: Winter workshops!!!
http://responsetotexts.blogspot.com/2010/06/winter-workshops.html
Making life my literature. Sunday, June 13, 2010. The amazing Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra. Have just announced this year's season of the Winter Workshops (PDF). Doing a workshop was never in question. In just over six months of playing, I've only been to one formal lesson, and that one lesson probably trebled my range of skills. The opportunity to learn some more without the expense of private tuition is something I've been absolutely gasping for. No, the question was which. La Vita è Bella.

litblog: How to while away a gloomy winter Saturday
http://responsetotexts.blogspot.com/2010/07/how-to-while-away-gloomy-winter.html
Making life my literature. Saturday, July 10, 2010. How to while away a gloomy winter Saturday. Cook dinner. but make it last. In case you're wondering about the order, it's important to cook dessert first so that the kitchen gets warm from the oven being on. You need this in addition to, not instead of, ambient heating if you want bread to rise in winter. HTML and $ LaTeX$ both work here. Graduate Rhapsody [closed]: There are two paths you can go by
http://undergrad-rhapsody.blogspot.com/2009/12/there-are-two-paths-you-can-go-by.html
Wednesday, December 2, 2009. There are two paths you can go by. Got my First. Phew. In principle, I could now complete a Masters in one year at Vic, enter directly into a PhD program at any New Zealand university, or start grad school from scratch in the USA (after passing the GRE, of course). Note that I'm not saying any of these is a good idea. They're just what the rules would allow me to do. Labels: artist: Led Zeppelin. Note: Only a member of this blog may post a comment. Graduate Rhapsody [closed]: Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road
http://undergrad-rhapsody.blogspot.com/2009/12/another-turning-point-fork-stuck-in.html
Thursday, December 31, 2009. Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road. And so I find myself leaving Victoria University of Wellington, probably for ever. I've been there for six years, and in that time a lot of things have changed - not always for the better. When I was a first year at Vic. Labour was in government. Stuart McCutcheon was the Vice-Chancellor at Victoria (he's now at Auckland, and Victoria has Pat Walsh instead). There was no myVictoria - access to the various online services was vi...

litblog: Customer service in New Zealand
http://responsetotexts.blogspot.com/2010/07/customer-service-in-new-zealand.html
Making life my literature. Saturday, July 24, 2010. Customer service in New Zealand. Around a month ago I asked Kiwibank to change the bank accounts that my EFTPOS card accesses. This morning I tried for the first time to use the "savings" button, only to find they'd changed the accounts over for just one of my cards without thinking to ask if I wanted the change for the other one as well - the one that I carry in my wallet. In Kiwibank's defense, they did try to call me when they realised the mistake, b...
