Observed by Watching

Where sports, writing and an observer meet. Monday, September 24, 2012. A question for golf fans. Watching the last round of the Tour Championship this morning. Let's imagine, for a second, that Rory McIlroy continues on the career trajectory that he seems to be laying out for himself. In other words, let's predict that Rory will be the Tiger of the current generation of young golfers. Given how well Rory has played lately, it's not much of a stretch. So, if Rory is the Tiger, who's the Phil? Whenever we...

Where sports, writing and an observer meet. Sunday, February 21, 2010. A tiny piece of good news! So, in the midst of all other things athletic going on right now (Go Canada! A little piece of excellent news came out of Canadian baseball this week. Buck Martinez is back. The only sad part of the story is that he's replacing Jamie Campbell, who I actually quite liked as well. Hopefully they have something exciting planned for him! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Where sports, writing and an observer meet. Wednesday, June 29, 2011. WH and I are in the final stages of planning for our summer vacation, a 21 day road trip loop from Alberta to Ontario and back again via Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Grand Forks, Marquette, Espanola, Miller Lake, Ottawa, Toronto, Chicago, La Crosse, Rapid City, Billings and Lethbridge. Whenever we travel, we do our best to squeeze in a professional baseball game and this year is no exception! It is possible that I am just a weeeeee bit excited.

Where sports, writing and an observer meet. Thursday, March 31, 2011. Wednesday, March 9, 2011. More on Mike Weir. Here's more information from TSN on Mike Weir's adventures. Seems that the outlook is more optimistic than I originally thought! Friday, March 4, 2011. Sad day for Canadian golf. So what happens now? Anyway, stay tuned, folks. I'm sure that much will be said about Mike Weir in the days to come and his future will become clearer. But for the time being, this golf fan is sad. More on Mike Weir.

Where sports, writing and an observer meet. Saturday, January 29, 2011. Blows dust off blog*. Wow three months since a sports-related post? It's not because I haven't been playing attention, believe me! Here are a few thoughts about the sports landscape as I see it:. It was very fun to watch all retrospectives of Gretzky's career this week for this 50th birthday. I had forgotten just how incomparable he was on the ice and I loved watching all of the highlights of him scoring goals that left goalies t...

In water, in butter and in wine. Welcome to my food blog! Tuesday, February 22, 2011. Ingredient of the Week: Scallops. As a way to ensure that the meal-planning around our place remains a family activity, I've begun asking Wonder Hubby to identify a new ingredient or technique or concept to try each week. I then take that suggestion and find a recipe to fulfill it! The first week, WH asked for something with scallops. I found and selected this recipe from Martha Stewart for Seared Scallops with Bacon.

In water, in butter and in wine. Welcome to my food blog! Wednesday, March 30, 2011. A first kitchen: Part 3 - Pots and Pans. So if you were buying a brand new set of pots and pans for someone who was setting up their first kitchen, what would you include? But let's say you were hand-picking the pieces to custom stock the kitchen. What would you look for? Here are my choices:. 1 small frying pan, for cooking meat or small quantities of vegetables for one or two people. I go back and forth on a double boi...

In water, in butter and in wine. Welcome to my food blog! Tuesday, September 25, 2012. WH and I got an excellent set of Henkel knives as a wedding present and they have served us well for the last five years. They were nothing too fancy but they were effective enough and we made good use of them. For the last few months, however, we have been talking about a growing desire to buy a high end set, especially as keeping the old set sharp became increasingly challenging. This one, to be exact:. Dudes Totally...

In water, in butter and in wine. Welcome to my food blog! Monday, October 1, 2012. LOOK WHAT I GOT FOR MY BIRTHDAY! Oh, this is entirely the kind of cookbook that makes a person like me so very, very happy. I watch Pitchin' In. WH and I are still working to be more conscientious about our local growers and producers and to learn more about compassionate and careful production of the food that we serve on our table. And cookbooks like this one give me the energy to keep going! Oh, the pictures!

In water, in butter and in wine. Welcome to my food blog! Saturday, December 11, 2010. A friend of mine held a baking exchange yesterday evening for Christmas goodies. Can I just say that I think the idea of a baking exchange for the holidays is brilliant? Instead of having to cook a whole bunch of different things, which takes both a great deal of time and money, each attendee baked 11 dozen of a favourite treat and then each attendee got one dozen of each kind of treat to take home. Voila! A letter to ...

In water, in butter and in wine. Welcome to my food blog! Thursday, January 26, 2012. I have begun to think about the kinds of things with which I would like to stock my freezer in the coming months as WH and I prepare for the impending arrival of our first baby. So I'll definitely be doing that, as well as making some meals that we can freeze and re-heat easily. Any other suggestions for edible things to have on hand that a new mom may not think of? In water, in butter and in wine. Welcome to my food blog! Sunday, June 27, 2010. Hungarian-style porkchops with sour cream sauce. In my post about our meal plan for last week, I mentioned Hungarian-style pork chops with sour cream sauce. As I mentioned, this recipe comes from the Weight Watchers in 20 Minutes cookbook, though we did adjust the recipe to be doable on the BBQ. It's been hot this week in Sherwood Park, so we've cooked outside as much as we can. Tuesday, June 22, 2010. Sunday, June 20, 2010.

Part 2 of the series will start the discussion about basic equipment! Monday, July 26, 2010. On the travel mug. I have a long, sordid and complicated historical relationship with travel mugs. Ok, perhaps "sordid" would be a bit of an overstatement. I was beginning to give up hope that a perfect travel mug existed anywhere, but.

Observed Art

Where art goes to be Observed. Wednesday, January 10, 2018. For the CBC April art show, I plan to return to my favorite abstract creatures. I like them, even if no one else does. So, who knows, it all depends on mood and what the magic wand feels like creating. It is looking like these guys are the winners. I have just decided to add a few more pictures for the CBC Arts Festival in April, and they are displayed below. They are still vaguely abstract. Saturday, September 30, 2017. Observed!

Jan 1, 2009. A Canid Droped into my Valley. A Dream: the slab. Just a vivid dream I had. Nothing of Substance in this post. A gray slab of rock of continental scale warms in the afternoon sun of my minds eye. 'What makes this kind of country' asks my fathers voice. 'plates come together and they crunch up or one is pushed under the other' I say. Off my left flank are open spaces and somewhere the channel is to powerful to ford, and the waterfalls sound greater than man or mountain. I'll tell you what&#46...
