Odd Birds In: March 2014

http://www.oddbirdsin.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html

For Birders That Are Just Odd of Center. Sunday, March 23, 2014. Sexes of the Seasons. It was one of those charcoal drawing mornings where the sky and clouds are same grays as the water and the trees and bushes have just had stronger stokes to darken them. To set them apart. It is a shades of gray scene as far as the eye can see. There is still a chill in the air, and the sunless morning seems not to know the calendar date. All around the locals are testing their voices after a long winter of silence.

Odd Birds In: February 2014

http://www.oddbirdsin.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

For Birders That Are Just Odd of Center. Friday, February 14, 2014. When ever I can't decide where it is I want to bird I always have a pocket of favorites that I can pull out. Today like many others I chose Stone Harbor Point. Last time I walked the Point it was cold, windy, and snow covered. Winter was in control. Today was one of those gift days South Jersey can throw your way in the middle of February. Today there are channels cutting between the dunes and I meander around the temporary water features.

Stories, photos and travel logs from my group of. 40-something friends "The Bird Nerds". Sunday, March 29, 2015. Roxy and I went for a nice long walk this morning at Lorimer Park. We spotted our FOS (First Of Year) Eastern Phoebe. In fact, we saw 5 of them. Here is one that we watched catch a few bugs. She's So Fine . . . She really is. Look closely. She has iridescent feathers, pretty blue tail feathers, a great white eye patch and that 'do. Check him out. This is what really attracts her. OK then Let's...

http://www.phillybirdnerd.net/2015_02_01_archive.html

Stories, photos and travel logs from my group of. 40-something friends "The Bird Nerds". Tuesday, February 17, 2015. We stood there and stood there and finally, another birder got a phone call - the bird was on the other road. We all jumped in our cars and raced around the corner where we should have been all along. It was a "bird jam" of cars, people, scopes and cameras. Paparazzi. We jumped out of the car and . . . When this guy flies, he is gone! One of the fastest fliers in the world, the Gyrfalcon i...

Stories, photos and travel logs from my group of. 40-something friends "The Bird Nerds". Saturday, September 20, 2014. Big Sigh of Relief. Terns - Cape May Beach. No, it doesn't have whiskers. In fact, I have more whiskers than than this tern has feathers. Not sure why they call it Whiskered. I picked it out of the crowd by its dark belly. There are actually 4 different tern species in that photo - Common, Forster's, Royal and Whikered along with a few Laughing Gulls. Links to this post. I still have the...

Stories, photos and travel logs from my group of. 40-something friends "The Bird Nerds". Sunday, August 2, 2015. Mid-Summer Birding at the Shore. Quick post to remind you that summer is pretty dull for birders however I did manage to get a few new photos of Skimmers which are one of my favorite birds in the world. Here are 4 of them skimming the shallow water at "The Meadows" in Cape May in the early morning. Black Skimmers at Cape May Meadows. I was on the Villas beach looking for banded shorebirds....

Stories, photos and travel logs from my group of. 40-something friends "The Bird Nerds". Tuesday, July 7, 2015. Where Have I Been? Sorry for the gap in posts. It has been a tough month. Our beloved Roxy succumbed to stomach cancer suddenly. The symptoms began before I left for Europe but the diagnosis wasn't made until I returned. Needless to say, I took a break from birding to focus on her care and subsequent death. Sorry to be a bummer but that's what has been going on. It was amazing how many birds we...

Stories, photos and travel logs from my group of. 40-something friends "The Bird Nerds". Monday, November 24, 2014. More Florida Follow Up. Another fan favorite at Corkscrew is the Pileated Woodpecker. They come much closer to the trail than they do in other parks. Here is a male hammering away at a cypress. You can tell it's a male by the red mustache. Females only have red on the crest. White Ibis were taking a break from feeding. I caught this one resting on a log. Links to this post.
