The Ohio Nature Blog: Highbanks Metropark Bald Eagles 2011
http://www.ohionatureblog.com/2011/03/highbanks-metropark-bald-eagles-2011.html
Tuesday, March 22, 2011. Highbanks Metropark Bald Eagles 2011. Highbanks Overlook- March 20, 2011- Click on image for a MUCH larger photograph. The bald eagles are once again nesting. At Highbanks Metropark, and it is quite a place to visit. By far, the most popular page on my blog the past year has been last year's posting about the highbanks bald eagles. For more updates on the eagles and when the volunteers will be staffing the overlook platform. If you can, get out to Highbanks. Jody- to really get a...

Sunday, August 24, 2014. Royal Tern, Litchfield Spit South Carolina. We enjoyed a wonderful trip to Litchfield by the Sea, South Carolina the week before last. It's our one week the boys look forward to year round. It's really our last hurrah for the summer. Preschool starts up next week for both boys, and so does Megan's semester. It'll be fall before I know it! Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Muffleheads, Midges, or Chironomids- Your Choice. Beetles in the Bush.

Monday, June 30, 2014. This year we are hosting at least one Red Milkweed Beetle (Tetraopes tetrophthalmus, I believe). Up close, they sort of look like some type of deranged teddy bear. This individual has been feasting on swamp milkweed, seriously stunting the plant. Links to this post. Sunday, June 29, 2014. Common Eastern Firefly - Photinus pyralis. Sunday, December 28, 2014. I've uploaded this image at 2000 pixels wide- click away and you'll see a much larger photograph. I've set up a station where the sparrows can feed just outside our sliding glass door- it's been fun watching them come right up through the window. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The Ohio Nature Blog: Amur Leopard - Columbus Zoo
http://www.ohionatureblog.com/2014/11/amur-leopard-columbus-zoo.html
Saturday, November 01, 2014. Amur Leopard - Columbus Zoo. Today we made a family trip to the Columbus Zoo. For me, it was the first in a few months, since we visited the new Africa area. Being a cold, blustery November day, we checked out the indoor exhibits. Rarely do we ever go inside the Asia quest area. To my surprise, we found two Amur leopards ( Panthera pardus orientalis). It's quite a riveting natural history read. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. Beetles in the Bush.

Redux: A Tutorial on How To Build a Coke Can Stove for Hiking, Bushcraft and Camping. I was just looking over my Coke can camping stove tutorial and thought it might be a good time to post it again - it is such an easy stove to make, and lots of fun. Okay, following up on a post about emergency preparedness. I saw a pile of Fondu Fuel bottles containing denatured alcohol. Boiling water is obviously important when camping or hiking or during a power outage. With one you can make hot drinks, heat meals...

Mungo Is Still Mad About Wool Blankets. So this is a rewrite of an older post. I'm going to start writing more again soon - but with the cold winter upon us here in Ontario, I wanted to share my Wool Blankets post again. Stay warm out there! So instead, I occasionally stop in at the neighbourhood thrift shop and browse the rack at the back of the floor where you can pick up used comforters, sheets and towels. Nearly every time I go there, there are one or two blankets waiting for me. A backpack can be qu...

20 Minute Knife Sharpening Board Tutorial. This little project should take you about 20 minutes at most. Mors Kochanski recommends making one of these in his book 'Bushcraft' (of which I have a signed copy! I had all the ingredients needed in my basement: 600 grit wet and dry sandpaper, double-sided carpet tape, a scrap of wood for mounting the sandpaper, a cutting board (another scrap of wood), a pencil and a piece of paper. Then I carefully and evenly adhered the sandpaper roughly positioned over the w...

Here are a couple of spoons I carved from a single chunk of white ash (fraxinus americana) I gathered from the park behind where I live in Toronto. The already-dead tree had collapsed in a windstorm last year. To finish them, I soaked them in olive oil for a day. The tree was likely the victim of the Emerald Ash Borer. I used my Gransfors-Bruks Small Forest Axe to cut up the log, and my Mora ' Classic Original 1. Well, I've just discovered that Mora has restarted making and is selling the Mora 510. From ...

http://www.mungosaysbah.com/2009/07/desperately-cleaning-my-msr-dragonfly.html
Desperately Cleaning my MSR Dragonfly Stove and Then Realizing I'd Plugged It Into the Fuel Bottle Wrong To Begin With. It is a great stove, it can simmer or roar loudly on full bore. It can be very noisy, but I've not got any complaints about that. The arms fold out and spring-load back to the element, to allow it to store down small. The arms keep the burner off of the ground to help insulate the unit, and the arms fold over to make a pot holder. I pulled the fuel pump out of the fuel cannister, filled...
Weedpicker's Journal:: Bird Well and Prosper
http://cherylharner.blogspot.com/2015/05/bird-well-and-prosper.html
Saturday, May 16, 2015. Bird Well and Prosper. As the dawn breaks fresh on a new day of birding. It is the beginning of a journey. No two days of birding are the same. One never knows if the birding will just be good, or if something in this day might be life-changing. Our journeys all start differently. My interest in "serious" birding did not happen until my 40's. Even now, it is but a portion of my interest and always tied to plant communities and habitats. Young raccoon sleeps off a rough night.
Weedpicker's Journal:: Mega-fruit for Megafauna?
http://cherylharner.blogspot.com/2010/02/mega-fruit-for-mega-fauna.html
Wednesday, February 17, 2010. Did you ever wonder what birding has to do with a Flora-blog? Or how birding might improve one's understanding of botany? The answers became clear to me this week. As a Weedpicker. I am always curious about the relationship between plants and animals. And while enjoying good looks at Green Lawn Cemetery's Merlin ( Jim McCormac. Has that story), I started asking questions about trees. In particular, the fruit of the Kentucky Coffee Tree,. Photo by Bruce Marlin credit Wiki.

Tuesday, June 27, 2017. My last post happened four days before my now 8-month and 8-day-year-old daughter Paige was born. In that time, we've found our footing as a family of five. The infant stage is over; and our little girl wants to be with us and doing the things we do always. Megan allowed me to get away with two friends to re-do a trip taken seven years ago to Yellowstone National Park. Here are a few images from our adventure. Links to this post. Just another WordPress.com site. Volunteers Are the Future. March 4, 2012. Why do twenty Ohioans leave home on a cold, windy Saturday morning to spend five or more hours removing invasive plants that are overrunning a state nature preserve? And why does a 70-year-old retired state employee spend hours to organize and lead the work trip, feed the volunteers at his own expense, and run a very loud shredder for hours to grind up the unwanted honeysuckle? The State clearly has limited interest in nature pres...
