Once upon an Austria...

Once upon an Austria. Tuesday, May 19, 2009. The easiest thing to remember in a foreign country is Carpe Diem. But it is also the quickest thing that you forget. The best thing to do is DO the thing you want as soon as you can - the next minute, hour, or day. Don't say 'next week' or 'next month'. Time doesn't exist like that. Sure, you might say: I'll do that the next time the sun's shining or the weather is nice. You know what? Did I mention that vegetarians can have a hard time of it over here? As you...

Once upon an Austria...: Warp Speed

http://www.onceuponanaustria.blogspot.com/2009/05/warp-speed.html

Once upon an Austria. Wednesday, May 13, 2009. I feel like I'm speeding forward into what could NOT be a new direction. Life is changing/going to change but is it all new? Does it have to be new? If it's 'old', maybe I'll be a little better at it this time. Practice makes perfect, right? Horizon looks good. If shadows are looming or pit falls are forming, they're doing so quietly. I'm looking forward to working the German out of my English. It's insidious, die Sprache. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Once upon an Austria...: Food

http://www.onceuponanaustria.blogspot.com/2009/05/food.html

Once upon an Austria. Tuesday, May 12, 2009. I just had a beautiful culinary experience! One of my teachers recommended that I try this Turkish food called Bulgur. Actually, I'm not 100% sure that it IS Turkish. Shall I adhere to today's lesson and say Middle Eastern. I think I just found my rice substitute! Recipe: Fry up some Bulgur (looks like chopped brown rice) in butter. Cook in a vegetable/beef broth. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Slovenia, Croatia, and Southern Austria - A Whirlw.

Once upon an Austria...: November 2008

http://www.onceuponanaustria.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html

Once upon an Austria. Sunday, November 30, 2008. Up and out of my window, I can see only the tinniest wisp of cotton-white in the sky. The last day of November and I wonder if this will be the last day of clear skies for the next few months. I can't hazard to believe that - the outlook would be too grim. Austria is lit up like a giant Christmas tree! PS new artsy photos:. Once Upon an Austria. Monday, November 24, 2008. The Cynic vs. The Pessimist. Up and onward - let's keep talking about the recent past.

Once upon an Austria...: February 2009

http://www.onceuponanaustria.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html

Once upon an Austria. Thursday, February 26, 2009. This is just a little something I jotted down hurriedly in my notebook on the way to Berlin.  Early mornings inspire me - when I'm awake enough to greet them properly.  This is an example of how my brain functions early in the morning.  I'm on my way from my home to the train station - about a 20 minute walk. Walking to the station before the break of dawn.  A bird calls.  Somewhere music plays but where? 160;Another punnish names comes to mind: . Gabi's...

Once upon an Austria...: October 2008

http://www.onceuponanaustria.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html

Once upon an Austria. Sunday, October 26, 2008. I will have to do a lesson on Halloween on Thursday. Any ideas? Dialect and Dinner Rolls. There are two things in Austria that one should NEVER, under any circumstances, take for granted: the thick, quirky dialect and the delicious seeming array of dinner rolls offered at any Austrian pub-restaurant. Sound almost Russian: "Wå' håst d' gesågt". Pretty soon, the waiter is going to return with a yummy basket of freshly baked bread sticks and pretzels. How ...

Everybody Wants to Go to Japan: let's play catch-up

http://denson-sensei.blogspot.com/2010/09/lets-play-catch-up.html

Everybody Wants to Go to Japan. Everybody, Just Hold Hands. Thursday, September 9, 2010. I am abysmally behind. In my defense, blogger got blocked at school (where I usually played catch up, during exam time), and then I was busy, you know. Moving back to America. So let's back, back, back, back it up (back it up! The last big thing I wrote about - other than the tragic passing of frisbee man - was my brother's visit. .In January. Hah! Everybody Wants to Go to Japan: my students can be pretty creative when they want to be

http://denson-sensei.blogspot.com/2010/02/my-students-can-be-pretty-creative-when.html

Everybody Wants to Go to Japan. Everybody, Just Hold Hands. Sunday, February 7, 2010. My students can be pretty creative when they want to be. Today in my third year junior high class, we were practicing making excuses. We played a game that involved presenting them with a situation, which they then had to improvise a response for. Here are some of the highlights:. Don't use your cell phone in class! It was my sister. My mother is dead. You shouldn't eat that cake! The cake says "Eat me.".

http://denson-sensei.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Everybody Wants to Go to Japan. Everybody, Just Hold Hands. Thursday, November 19, 2009. Facts you didn't know about the world around you. So, we're currently doing variations of the infamous "Country Project" in four classes - three low-level first year classes, and in the second-year international course. Essentially, students have to research foreign countries, make a poster, and give a presentation about it in English. 8220;Europa is in Prague.”. Do they know that? And, my personal favorite:.

Everybody Wants to Go to Japan: the paperwork is in

http://denson-sensei.blogspot.com/2010/02/paperwork-is-in.html

Everybody Wants to Go to Japan. Everybody, Just Hold Hands. Tuesday, February 2, 2010. The paperwork is in. For now I feel pretty good about this decision, though come July I'll probably be crying everyday. Already I'm making plans to try and keep in touch with my school in a meaningful way. And as for the students, well, thank goodness that my unofficially favorite class has recently discovered facebook! So, that's that. On a slightly more frivolous note, here's some more cute student stories! And Italy...

Everybody Wants to Go to Japan: April 2009

http://denson-sensei.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html

Everybody Wants to Go to Japan. Everybody, Just Hold Hands. Monday, April 27, 2009. Off to join the hordes. Two more classes, and I'm off to Mongolia. Monday, April 20, 2009. Classes are finally getting into full swing! And I am totally confused at all times. Our schedules have finally been more or less decided, but it's a totally different dynamic in almost every class we teach. (Excepting certain junior high classes, which are thankfully still headed by the indomitable Nakatani-sensei.). Last Friday, i...

Everybody Wants to Go to Japan: winter break with onii-chan

Everybody Wants to Go to Japan. Everybody, Just Hold Hands. Thursday, February 11, 2010. Winter break with onii-chan. Okay, just a little more catching up to do before this blog is actually up to date for once. Starting from the end of December! For winter break I didn't travel anywhere.because my brother came to visit! Kinkakuji (The Golden Pavilion) -. Probably the most famous temple in Kyoto, which is saying something. It has an iconic stilted deck, and provides great views of the city. I really love ...

Everybody Wants to Go to Japan: fall term, part 2 (November - December)

http://denson-sensei.blogspot.com/2010/01/fall-term-part-2-november-december.html

Everybody Wants to Go to Japan. Everybody, Just Hold Hands. Monday, January 25, 2010. Fall term, part 2 (November - December). To make the inherent craziness of this theater troupe even crazier, the show that we went to see was a Japanese language musical. And I said to her, "Humphrey Bogart is rolling in his grave.". Apparently it can happen spontaneously, especially to young, tall, slender men - all of which apply to David. (Fortunately he made a full, if long, recovery, and is fine now! That's right, ...

Everybody Wants to Go to Japan. Everybody, Just Hold Hands. Tuesday, January 27, 2009. So, I know my last post is only a few hours old (and probably no one has even read it yet), but I mentioned that Kristin's recontracting decision was due today, because she is a third-year, and they have different procedures. Well, word is in: she's heading back to Canada and/or parts unknown. And why do we care? You might be asking. Well, let's consider this my official announcement, as well. I'm staying another year.

Everybody Wants to Go to Japan: September 2009

http://denson-sensei.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html

Everybody Wants to Go to Japan. Everybody, Just Hold Hands. Tuesday, September 29, 2009. Tokyo Orientation, and Hoooong Koooong! I swear, time flies. Mostly when you're having fun, but sometimes when you're just plain busy. I see that last time, I left off just before Tokyo Orientation. On Saturday, July 25th, I caught the shinkansen. Paul doesn't speak any Japanese, so I'm always trying to tell him what the girls are saying: "They think you're really cool," or, "They want to know how tall you are," or e...
