One Man's Journey Into Linux. Or: How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love Windows. Monday, 23 March 2009. Heads in the Clouds. I've been trying to understand Cloud Computing. No, let me rephrase that, I've been trying to understand what's. About Cloud Computing. Microsoft are busy prepping their Azure. Services Platform in readiness for taking on Amazon Web Services. Microsoft have some Case Studies. To help those us having problems with the whole Cloud thing. Ok But is there really anything new here?

One Man's Journey Into Linux. Or: How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love Windows. Thursday, 19 February 2009. Ifconfig eth1 mtu 9200. To make this permenant, you just need to add MTU=9200 in the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1 file. On Perceus this is done in the /etc/perceus/modules/ipaddr file. The only other thing you need is a switch that has Jumbo frame support enabled. That done, you can test everything is working by pinging with a Jumbo packet size:. So why haven't I done this before?
One Man's Journey Into Linux: Two more nodes

One Man's Journey Into Linux. Or: How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love Windows. Saturday, 21 March 2009. I've added two additional nodes to my cluster. The new nodes have Asus rather than Abit motherboards and, unfortunately, CentOS 5.2 doesn't support the Nvidia nForce 630a chipset. So I was left with a choice of either trying to build the necessary drivers, or finding an alternative. In the end I decided to give CAOS Linux another try. There seems to be no link on the website. I wasn't going to go o...

One Man's Journey Into Linux. Or: How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love Windows. Monday, 30 July 2007. My thanks go to Mike for his comment here. The updated GATech driver fixed my D630 sound problem. I now have a "STAC92xx Analog" sound device. I should go on holiday more often! I don't suppose anyone knows anything about Bluetooth? The latest Fedora kernel update 2.6.22.1-33.fc7 fixes the D630 DVD issue. All good things come to those who wait. Of Linux, Holidays and Bluetooth. Why can't it just work?

Wednesday, January 24, 2007. Is Vista really a $10bn Sedan? So, what do you think of Vista? The reviews of Vista I've seen usually start with how good it looks - which is understandable. It does look good - especially if you can run the Aero desktop and you get the glass title bars and Flip 3D. Ok, Flip 3D is a bit of a gimmick. But it does put the "Wow" in. The "Wow" starts now. Project. The ghost of TaskGallery still haunts their website here. Anyone interested should read this article. The User Interf...

Tuesday, August 26, 2008. I came across this article. Somewhat optimistically entitled "Vista Annoyances. It's worth reading because the author, Koroush Ghazi, does try to address some of the - er -. Of the Vista experience. Ghazi goes on to discuss eight more annoyances, including User Account Control. The Vista "feature" that loads as much of your RAM as possible with stuff that you. There are problems Ghazi doesn't mention, however. As Paul Thurrott writes. How about the weird folder/file deletion bug...

Friday, February 16, 2007. If you're running Vista and you are logged on with an Administrator account (but not. Administrator account) and you double click on the Personal Edition of User Profile Wizard, Vista will darken ominously and throw up the following User Account Control prompt:. You started this program. Your supposed to be a. Ten billion dollar Operating System. For crying out loud! Now let me say right away that User Account Control (UAC) is a. If you are logged on with. Tuesday, October 21, 2008. User Profile Wizard 3.0 RC1. We're nearly there. The User Profile Wizard 3.0 "Release Candidate" is now available for download here. We regard RC1 as extremely stable, and we do not foresee any major changes to the code between now and when the product is fully released. There have, for example, been no changes to the core profile migration code since BETA 2. But you can list any accounts that you want. Last but definitely not least, the " Deployment Kit. Has been completely re...

Friday, June 20, 2008. Introducing User Profile Wizard 3.0 - Part III. Running additional programs as an Administrator. On a user's desktop. The user being prompted to "elevate" the process. To show how this works, lets try and run something that requires Administrator permissions: Vista's Windows Firewall Settings. Normally, of course, you would never want to do this as part of your migration! However, it is as good an example as any. If you run FirewallSettings.exe (and you are not. If we are running a...

Wednesday, May 11, 2011. What's new in User Profile Wizard 3.5? Here are the headlines. Migrating over a VPN. The ablity to migrate a computer to a new domain over a VPN has probably been our number one request from customers in recent years. If you have ever tried it, you will know that the problem is not so much with the migration itself, but what happens afterwards. With Administrator credentials. Only if the program is started with the. Local Administrator account (which is disabled by default) or the.

Thursday, November 02, 2006. Fixing Temporary Profiles and User Profile Wizard 2.5. One of the best things about User Profile Wizard is that it is extremely reliable. At ForensiT we spend quite a lot of time helping customers get their migration scripts right, but once everything is working it tends to stay working. There is however, one support question that keeps coming back to haunt us. What is even more frustrating is that it isn't even our problem. A typical support call will begin like this:. The p...

Friday, September 10, 2010. Changing the Default Profile on Windows 7. It has become increasingly obvious to us in recent months that people are downloading and installing our User Profile Manager software just in order to use the Set As Default Profile feature on Windows 7. Presumably they are then uninstalling the software again afterwards. Why Microsoft have done this is not altogether clear. Responses on the Microsoft’s support forums say things like. The most likely answer to that is that they just ...

Wednesday, March 07, 2012. What's new in User Profile Wizard 3.6? One of the big advantages of using User Profile Wizard over other migration tools, including ADMT, is that User Profile Wizard does not need access to the old domain. There may be a number of reasons why the old domain is not available: your company may have taken over a division of another company, and you do not have access to their domain; the old domain may have crashed; there may not even. Let me just emphasize that again: this is an.

One Man's Journey Into Linux
One Man's Journey Into Linux. Or: How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love Windows. Wednesday, 16 December 2009. F#, Erlang and GPUs. At ForensiT we’re right at the start of planning a major new project. For the first time, we’re thinking seriously about F#. F# is now a fully featured .NET language and ships as part of Visual Studio 2010. But why even consider F# instead of, say, Erlang? Here’s some F# code that Luca Bolognese demonstrates in his excellent PDC 2008 presentation. One technology that is alr...

My Journey Fighting Melanoma. As the title says this blog is one man’s effort to make sense out of his journey fighting melanoma. I have enjoyed reading some of my fellow melanoma warriors’ blogs and thought it might be an interesting way to share what this journey has been like for me. If you find this interesting great, if not that’s great also. Selfishly this is more about me getting this out and moving on from being a cancer patient to being a cancer survivor. Let’s clear up a few things. Three years...
