One Woman's Evolution

Tuesday, August 7, 2007. Journalists Are Socially Awkward. I've been working at a newspaper this summer and one thing that strikes me everyday is how socially awkward the newsroom is. People send emails to the person sitting next to them while others talk about *** with the f-word liberally sprinkled through the conversation. These are things I'd never do. I wonder is it because I'm young and don't quite feel like an adult yet? Or is it a weird newsroom code that I haven't learned? Sunday, May 27, 2007.

One Woman's Evolution: Naked...literally and figuratively

http://www.onewomansevolution.blogspot.com/2007/05/nakedliterally-and-figuratively.html

Sunday, May 27, 2007. So today I had my first ever massage. Might I suggest that if you’ve never had a massage, getting an Ayurvedic massage in Kerala is not the best way to start. Out of the stupor of an hour long nap, I was awakened by a phone call to my room saying “Please come now for your massage.”. On arrival, I was asked a very important question. “Are you on your menstrual cycle? The massage motion she used wasn’t really a kneading motion but a swoop. She chanted as she massaged and I p...Then I ...

One Woman's Evolution: Commercialism and Tibetan Buddhism

http://www.onewomansevolution.blogspot.com/2007/05/commercialism-and-tibetan-buddhism.html

Sunday, May 27, 2007. Commercialism and Tibetan Buddhism. We visited a Tibetan monastery a week ago. The monastery was so incredibly vivid. I guess I was expecting a dull place but it was as bright as the mandala sand painting that Tibetan monks made at W&L this winter. While the place was beautiful, I can’t get over how commercialized it was. Outside of the monastery was a little. With Tibetan refugees selling all sorts of goods. With eyes watching sacred ceremonies, they somehow lose their sacredness.

One Woman's Evolution: India Is No Amusement Park

http://www.onewomansevolution.blogspot.com/2007/05/india-is-no-amusement-park.html

Sunday, May 27, 2007. India Is No Amusement Park. Rachel, Taylor, Emily and I left for our weekend holiday in Kerala, a neighboring state with a beach. Dr Rao told us the drive to Kerala would be about four hours. It turned out to be closer to five and a half. We ventured out with our driver, Robi, and it was smooth sailing for about an hour or two. Movie or was on an amusement park ride. Is increasingly teaching me that I have very little control, a scary thought for a control freak.

One Woman's Evolution: Swami Vivikenda Youth Movement

http://www.onewomansevolution.blogspot.com/2007/05/swami-vivikenda-youth-movement.html

Sunday, May 27, 2007. Swami Vivikenda Youth Movement. My heart is truly touched. Today, I saw a healthcare system that is holistic, that cares more about the well-being of the community than the machine of the body. The Swami Vivikenda Youth Movement was a hospital created by doctors in a rural community that includes tribal families. This NGO provides basically free healthcare for people and has also set up a school for local children. The doctor isn’t providing just free healthcare. So we grow up confu...

It's just another day, depending on grace.: Summer Insight

http://justanotherday-rachel.blogspot.com/2007/07/summer-insight.html

It's just another day, depending on grace. Wednesday, July 4, 2007. Living in Marvell is like living in another world. Jamila has lived in Jamaica and Guyana, and I just got back from India, so we joke that living here is equivalent to living in a 3rd world country. We have racked up quite a list of reasons:. 1 Everyone stares at you, because they know you aren't a local. 2 There are stray dogs everywhere. 3 There are no stoplights in Marvell. 4 Street names mean absolutely nothing.

Katya Ona Takaya: April 2008

http://onatakaya.blogspot.com/2008_04_01_archive.html

Rough Russian Translation: That's Who She Is. Saturday, April 19, 2008. A Tale of Two.Fish. Even though this was the ugliest fish I had seen up till then, I embraced this special little guy and named him.well I can't remember his name, but I am pretty sure it was along the lines of Melville or Herman. After my experiences with Melville or Herman and Jodie, I have sworn off fish. They die to quickly and randomly. As I had led to in the beginning, I had found that old fish tank in a box in a closet. It's just another day, depending on grace. Tuesday, April 10, 2007. Life for the next few months. In the midst of preparing to go abroad for the next month and a half, I began to wonder how the heck I was going to keep in touch with everyone. On my sorority family's last get-together of the term, someone mentioned starting a blog. So that's just what I did. I am so excited for the upcoming months, and look forward to being able to post some beautiful pictures and hopefully an adventure or two.

Rough Russian Translation: That's Who She Is. Monday, May 5, 2008. On the way to church, Josh turned to Jade and said that he wanted to go to Disneyland before they left for Chicago. She said no unless we went with them because I had never been as a child. Who has never been to Disneyland as a kid? We met at Oregano's (one of Ryan's other favorite places to eat) on Thursday to plan our trip. Anyways.we had a lot of fun on the 6 hour drive to California. On Saturday we got to Disneyland around 10:...On Su...

http://justanotherday-rachel.blogspot.com/2007/06/final-week.html

It's just another day, depending on grace. Friday, June 15, 2007. Friday, June 1st, was our last day in India. Having finally turned in my last paper the night before, we headed out in the morning determined to ride an elephant on the palace grounds. To our disappointment, the palace attractions hadn't started yet, but we were in for an unexpected surprise. Wow wat a shopping experience! May 31, 2011 at 12:48 PM. It's just another day, depending on grace. Monday, May 21, 2007. Last Weekend in Mysore! Sadly, this past weekend was our last in Mysore. Of course, we had to live it up. The festivities began with a shopping extravaganza on Friday afternoon. We visited the Cauvery Arts and Crafts Emporium, the Silk Emporium, our three favorite Badsha stores (the family has about 9 stores just in Mysore! Prof Lubin had to leave on Sunday afternoon, so we threw him a little going-away party. Unfortunately, the cake de...
