Think global - buy local. Coratina is an olive tree that seems to want to be a bush. The year after planting, they sucker and start growing extremely strong right from the very base of the tree. We could be all controlling, but live and let live is better, don’t you think? Let each tree be an individual and all that crystal new wave thinking, right? Besides, bushes are easier to pick than trees! Who knew that olives could turn red?

Oregon Olives - Picual

Think global - buy local. It’s easy to confuse things, especially when you a pioneer. At first I thought Picual. Was not well adapted to this area; but now I think it is more of just a problem of the spot where they were planted being the problem ( run down soil, competition from very large Douglas fir trees). In fact, the five Picual trees seem to have made it through our severe winter storm of December 2008 with no damage what-so-ever. Reken Estate 01/15/09.

Oregon Olives - Sevillano

Think global - buy local. Sevillano and Kalamata are the only olive cultivars that are commonly grafted in the U.S. This is because cuttings root so poorly. These Sevillano were weak, spindly, and poorly grafted specimens when we got them in the spring of 2009. Since then, the survivors look a little better, but at this point the cultivar just can't be recommended for Oregon.
