Oregon Olives - 2014_c0

http://www.oregonolives.com/index_files/OregonOlives2014_0.htm

Think global - buy local. 2014 @ Oregon Olives. July 14, 2014. How many total olive trees have we planted, and how many have survived? Well, heck, I've wanted to know that answer myself! So, I put together the list, by cultivar, and here it is (most of it):. Adding in 45 more trees we recently planted, means we have about 621 trees in the ground right now. Peacock spot to this level, doesn't really bother me (much better than a dead tree! July 11, 2014, Reken Estate Carolea olive trees:. July 15, 2014.

Think global - buy local. 2014 @ Oregon Olives. Mar 13, 2014. Reasons to prune: #1. I like to prune. But that isn't good enough to actually make me do some pruning - there has to be a good reason to do so. I have two grafted Kalamata trees where the rootstock has suckered. I have been using these to demonstrate the facts to people on tours, but we aren't going to be touring this grove any more. So, time to prune the sucker! That's the rootstock sucker. And now it's gone, all that is left is Kalamata:.

http://www.oregonolives.com/index_files/OregonOlives2015_1.htm

Think global - buy local. 2015 @ Oregon Olives. Jan 1, 2015. First farmers in the field! Although of course for us olive growers this is just a continuation of the 2014 harvest, none the less it is the new year and we are still at it! 01/01/15 a multi estate blend of Frantoio, Leccino, Hoji Blanca and Picual olives:. Jan 9, 2015. The Alpha and the Omega. So, that leaves Amfissa as the first and the last olives picked in the 2014 season. Jan 11, 2015. Winter Avocado and Citrus Harvest. 01/11/15 Avocado an...

Oregon Olive Oil - 2011

http://www.oregonoliveoil.com/index_files/OregonOliveOil2011.htm

Think global - buy local. Greener than grass green. Greener than emerald green. Maybe as green as the finest opaque jade. Maybe obsidian green, if obsidian had a green tinge! That's what 100% Oregon grown olive oil looks like this year. But, I get ahead of myself. Sara (on the left) is picking olives by hand, into a bucket on the ground. Carmen on the right is picking into a shoulder strap waist bucket, using a hand olive rake:. 100% Oregon grown and processed olive oil, Dec 2010. Carmen, Hannah, Sara an...

Oregon Olive Trees - Planting

http://www.oregonolivetrees.com/index_files/Planting.htm

Think global - buy local. First, in all honesty I have to recommend that you plant grapes instead of olives, if you are into farming for the money. There is no doubt in my mind that from an agronomic point of view, if you have a good place to grow olives in Oregon, that grapes will do better and yield more. Particularly here on the hillsides of the Willamette Valley, pinot noir is King. So, OK, you want to plant olive trees, right? So what is everybody else planting? Arbequina 1,089,900. Used only for ta...

Oregon Olives - Coratina

http://www.oregonolivetrees.com/index_files/Coratina.htm

Think global - buy local. Coratina is an olive tree that seems to want to be a bush. The year after planting, they sucker and start growing extremely strong right from the very base of the tree. We could be all controlling, but live and let live is better, don’t you think? Let each tree be an individual and all that crystal new wave thinking, right? Besides, bushes are easier to pick than trees! Who knew that olives could turn red?

Oregon Olives - Santa Caterina

http://www.oregonolivetrees.com/index_files/SantaCaterina.htm

Think global - buy local. For you risk takers: if you can get Santa Caterina established well in the ground, it might just be the cat's meow. Of the few we have remaining in the ground, they appear to have shrugged off the December 2009 radiative freezing with nary a shiver.

Oregon Olives - Picual

http://www.oregonolivetrees.com/index_files/Picual.htm

Think global - buy local. It’s easy to confuse things, especially when you a pioneer. At first I thought Picual. Was not well adapted to this area; but now I think it is more of just a problem of the spot where they were planted being the problem ( run down soil, competition from very large Douglas fir trees). In fact, the five Picual trees seem to have made it through our severe winter storm of December 2008 with no damage what-so-ever. Reken Estate 01/15/09.

Oregon Olives - Sevillano

http://www.oregonolivetrees.com/index_files/Sevillano.htm

Think global - buy local. Sevillano and Kalamata are the only olive cultivars that are commonly grafted in the U.S. This is because cuttings root so poorly. These Sevillano were weak, spindly, and poorly grafted specimens when we got them in the spring of 2009. Since then, the survivors look a little better, but at this point the cultivar just can't be recommended for Oregon.

Oregon Olives - Carolea

http://www.oregonolivetrees.com/index_files/Carolea.htm

Think global - buy local. Said to be used for oil; and for green and black pickling. Self incompatible. Clingstone. Reken Estate, planted in June of 2010:. The tree shown above is one of the five shown below, but to be honest I don't remember which one! However, no matter, all five are doing excellent, with very little debilitation. Especially considering they were planted the same year as having a really large crop relative to the size of the tree. Reken Estate, 08/21/11:. Reken Estate, 10/20/10:.

Oregon Olive Trees - Introduction

http://www.oregonolivetrees.com/index_files/Introduction.htm

Think global - buy local. Living on the Edge - Growing Olive Trees in Oregon. First, the disclaimer! Olives are not a recommended commercial crop for Oregon:. Olives: Not Recommended in Oregon. The basic problem is that it gets pretty cold here in the winters. For example, here is a picture of a Leccino olive tree on Sept. 1st, 2008:. And here is the same tree on Dec 22nd, 2008:. What we are doing. Conventional wisdom has it that oil type cultivars should be grown in marginal climate regions. We are ...

Oregon Olives - Leccino

http://www.oregonolivetrees.com/index_files/Leccino.htm

Think global - buy local. And below is Mt. Hood to the right of another Leccino. This year, this is about how ripe Leccino got: sort of a sun blush brown-orange on the southern side. Reken Estate: 11/29/08. Since we seem to have a volcano / Leccino thing going on, here is another Leccino with Mt Jefferson in the background. Kathy’s Grove: 11/15/08. So far, of all our cultivars, the highest yielding tree has been a. Picking Leccino olives. Kathy’s Grove: 11/29/08. Origin - Tuscany, Italy). Precocious and ...

Oregon Olive Oil

Think global - buy local. Dec 2011 Obsidian Green Olive Oil. Once again, in our climate On The Edge, we made a super green olive oil; we call it Obsidian Green! Here are seven bottles of the November 2011 oil, flanked on the right by the sole remaining bottle from 2010, and on the left by a small bottle of McEvoy Ranch Tuscan olive oil:. I am pretty sure that the McEvoy oil was harvested a couple of years ago (there is no date on the bottle. Bad Californians! Not in commercial quantities yet, but Oregon ...
