Thursday, August 20, 2009. Inlaying Pearl In Brass. Inlaying pearl is a challenge. The stuff is hard and brittle, and thus unforgiving. I'm not a huge fan of it for instrument work. I prefer more subtle materials like wood or ivory. Nevertheless, the shimmering iridescence of mother of pearl can be a nice touch when used sparingly, for my taste. Thursday, January 5, 2012. About three years ago I finished my last oud. Six years of tedious "workmanship of risk" can get to you. I burned out. I also found that I neglected important work in that time. Like building basic furniture that I've always wanted to build for my family and myself. In the meantime I've been trying to get the backlog of furniture projects whittled down. And I'm making progress. Step by step, as they say. And in particular the Personal Work. Monday, February 14, 2011. The Allure of Old Iron Realized. Last year (just scroll down, not like I've posted much lately) I mentioned a Powermatic 1200 drill press I was in the process of restoring. Adventures with Tom and Kathryn. Tuesday, March 5, 2013. We're not sure where the time has gone, but we now have a 6 week old baby boy. He is growing so quickly! In the past few days I've noticed that he isn't the same skinny baby he was before. His cheeks are filling out and his legs are getting chubby. He has also really started to smile (of course, every time we bring the camera out he stops grinning). So much fun! These weren't always 3/4 length sleeves. Thanks, Maryanne, for the adorable onesie!

The things I make. Saturday, 16 January 2010. In the first video I will show how I prepare a piece of square section Mahogany to be turned into a mushroom. The sanding disc has 80 grit paper PVA glued to a Birch ply faceplate. The turning tool is a 2.5mm square graver that is sharpened like a parting tool on one end and like a round scraper on the other.It has a friction fit into the mahogany handle and is easilly swapped end to end when required. The second video is of me turning the actual mushroom.
