Heading North: January 2014
http://shewiesworld.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 29 January 2014. Mild Winter Hanging In The Cairngorms. Surprisingly I managed to stay toasty warm all night, the only cold bit I had was my nose poking out of my balaclava. I thought I'd suffer with a touch of CBS so had a piece of refletix standing by, I slept right through so never really needed it. I was actually awake before Pete for once, I made coffee from the hammock and snoozed for a while. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Song of the Paddle. View my complete profile. Alan sloman's big walk.

A bit of Monadhliath | Whiteburn's Wanderings
https://whiteburnswanderings.wordpress.com/2015/04/22/a-bit-of-monadhliath
One man's wanderings backpacking around Scotland plus the odd digression. A bit of Monadhliath. I’d been planning a few trips into the Monadhliath before the forthcoming wind farms completely change the place (i.e trash) but my knee injury put me out of action for a couple of months earlier in the year some what delaying things. Despite the forecasted long spell of good weather various commitments got in the way of a longer trip but a few days wandering is always welcome. 23km, 580m ascent. I passed this...

Rum | Whiteburn's Wanderings
https://whiteburnswanderings.wordpress.com/2015/07/02/rum
One man's wanderings backpacking around Scotland plus the odd digression. I was struggling, the 750m climb up to Sgurr nan Gillean first thing on a morning, well 9am, with a stinking hangover isn’t to be recommended. A buddy and I had taken his boat across to Dibidil Bothy on Rum the night before with the target of completing the Cuillin Ridge. Having access to a boat did eliminate the long and boggy approach to the bothy and make it easy to take in a few logs and an oversupply of alcohol. The route over...

Heading North: April 2014
http://shewiesworld.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Sunday, 20 April 2014. Far Eastern Fells - Lake District. I had a nice trip to the Lakes over the weekend with Pete and Andy, it was a kit testing trip, a start to our Cape Wrath Trail planning and an opportunity to get the legs hill fit again. We planned a short circular route as none of us were exactly 100% with our various injuries and ailments. The sun was really hot in places on Friday afternoon, we stopped for shade under some pines after one climb. Looking down into Mardale. Enjoying the warmth of...

Heading North: March 2013
http://shewiesworld.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 19 March 2013. On The Bonnie Banks. I hooked up with the guys north of the border for some canoe camping at the weekend, a very chilled out affair, mostly spent under the 'chute dodging the rain and chilly winds. It was good to be back up there and I hope to get a lot more paddling in again this year, some pics . Landed at the beach. The view for the weekend, although it wasn't always as sunny as this. Stephen getting his camp sorted out. Josh's bivvy under an old Hennessy tarp I think. The firs...

Heading North: May 2014

Monday, 26 May 2014. Southern Fells - Lake District. I spent a few days in the SW Lake District last week with Teepee, more kit testing and plenty of hill practice ahead of our Cape Wrath Trail walk later in the year. We headed SW as it's an area neither of us have walked in before, I've paddled on Coniston many times and looked up at the surrounding hills but this time I would get to walk them. Emerging from the cover of the trees we're greeted with the first view of Wetherlam, our first peak of the day.

Heading North: November 2013
http://shewiesworld.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 19 November 2013. Birthday Trip to Loch Shiel. It was a nice paddle down the swollen river, the pools we'd seen on another visit were about four feet under water, one main channel heading out into the loch. Turning the corner to head west to the camp site I was blinded by the low sun, it seemed to take forever to get to the beach and the heavy boat didn't help. I had a great week despite the weather, it was nice to chill out and slow things down for a few days. My humble abode for the week.

Easter Bunnies | Whiteburn's Wanderings
https://whiteburnswanderings.wordpress.com/2015/04/10/easter-bunnies
One man's wanderings backpacking around Scotland plus the odd digression. I missed the good weather over the Easter weekend thanks to trying to shrug off a dose of the dreaded ‘man flu’ but fortunately the spell of good weather seemed to be unusually, for Easter in Scotland, to be extending into the week ahead so it was off to the ‘gorms with a view to wandering some unfamiliar territory and visit some ‘old friends’. I’d travelled 12km , a bit further than planned but it would serve to shorten tomorrows ...

Trouble with the Starlyte | Whiteburn's Wanderings
https://whiteburnswanderings.wordpress.com/2015/07/02/trouble-with-the-starlyte
One man's wanderings backpacking around Scotland plus the odd digression. Trouble with the Starlyte. Recently I experienced a couple of issues with my Zelph Starlyte. Firstly when hot flame would appear from around the edge of the reduction ring (Caldera cone version) leading to an output higher then nominal and possibly a loss in efficiency. More disconcerting was that on occasions flame would appear around the edge of the metal top which could lead to a fire if the stove was on grass. July 3, 2015.

Air-mat inflator | Whiteburn's Wanderings
https://whiteburnswanderings.wordpress.com/2015/02/17/air-mat-inflator
One man's wanderings backpacking around Scotland plus the odd digression. With the purchase of an Exped Symat 7UL. 2 3 years ago I started to look for a simple inflation mechanism; as Exped state. To prevent the accumulation of humidity from your breath in the mat, we recommend the use of the optional lightweight Mini Pump, Pillow Pump, Schnozzel Pumpbag or the Schnozzel…. I persevered for while with a simple plastic bag with a piece of PVC pipe taped into the corner, it worked but it wasn’t ideal. In fa...
