Friday, April 6, 2018. Paige Turner - April. If you’re reading this, you can read, yep. It may seem like a silly statement, but being able to read makes you part of the 50% of Tasmanians who can read and write. Only 50% of us are functionally literate, which is of significant concern for all of us. What to do? You can also attend other celebrations of reading and writing, such as the launch of Word Fall. Paige Loves Books: Van Diemen's Land, an Aboriginal History by Murray Johnson and Ian McFarlane

http://paigelovesbooks.blogspot.com/2015/05/van-diemens-land-aboriginal-history-by.html

Sunday, May 24, 2015. Van Diemen's Land, an Aboriginal History by Murray Johnson and Ian McFarlane. Van Diemen's Land, an Aboriginal History. Is actually another white man's history of Aboriginal Tasmania, but in this case it is written by two men, who are extremely knowledgeable in the area of Aboriginal Tasmania, both of them having lectured in the area for many years. I interviewed Ian McFarlane when the book was released, for The Book Show on Edge Radio. You can hear the full interview here.

Paige Loves Books: September 2014

http://paigelovesbooks.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Wednesday, September 24, 2014. Review of Born Bad; original sin and the making of the Western World by James Boyce. It is a treat for the reader that a subject as bold, intricate and dense as original sin has been examined by the eloquent James Boyce. In his hands what may seem a terrifying subject is thoroughly examined and put through its historical, theological and psychological paces. Born Bad; original sin and the making of the Western World. Boyce’s obvious affection for and interest in Luthe...

Tuesday, December 24, 2013. Nadine Kessler discusses book design. Nadine Kessler likes typography which is fortunate as she works with it daily as a typographer and designer, with a focus on publication design. She arrived in the studio armed with some very attractive books and was a fabulous guest to feature on episode 1 series 2, The Book Show on Edge Radio. You can listen to the full interview here. Atticus Lish’s PREPARATION FOR THE NEXT LIFE – Bite The Book

https://bitethebook.com/2015/05/17/atticus-lishs-preparation-for-the-next-life

Book Reviews and Views. May 17, 2015. May 28, 2015. Atticus Lish’s PREPARATION FOR THE NEXT LIFE. This is one of those books that immediately after you start reading you know you are in the hands of a wonderful writer. Atticus Lish has delivered a delicately savage critique on post-9/11 America and the so-called American Dream in a beautiful love story of an illegal immigrant and an American soldier recently returned from Iraq. Classification: Modern and contemporary fiction (post c 1945). Preparation fo...

Ben Aaronovitch’s WHISPERS UNDER GROUND – Bite The Book

https://bitethebook.com/2015/02/28/ben-aaronovitchs-whispers-under-ground

Book Reviews and Views. February 28, 2015. Ben Aaronovitch’s WHISPERS UNDER GROUND. I cannot get enough of this series! It is such a wicked combination of history, police procedural and of course magic. This time we explore London’s underground where not only are secrets buried but something DC Peter Grant can’t even imagine. This series is building nicely and with each new case Peter encounters more unanswered questions begin to build including who is the faceless man? Publisher: Orion Publishing Co.

Drew Daywalt & Oliver Jeffers’ THE DAY THE CRAYONS CAME HOME – Bite The Book

https://bitethebook.com/2015/05/21/drew-daywalt-oliver-jeffers-the-day-the-crayons-came-home

Book Reviews and Views. May 21, 2015. August 22, 2015. Drew Daywalt and Oliver Jeffers’ THE DAY THE CRAYONS CAME HOME. Following on from the phenomenally brilliant. The Day The Crayons Quit. Comes the sequel. The crayons are back…and they are still not happy. This time around Duncan has to deal with the lost and forgotten crayons. The broken, chewed and melted crayons. And they are all, quite rightly, even more upset! Oliver Jeffers’ wonderful illustrations are typically vibrant, absurd and brillia...

hobART: March 2015

http://hobartart.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Critical commentary on the Hobart art scene and beyond (& the occasional self-indulgent musing or rant). Guide to Hobart's galleries. Sunday, March 1, 2015. In a few months, I'll be off to Paris to stay at the Rosamond McCulloch studio at the Cite Internationale des Arts. The studio was a bequest by the late artist to the Tasmanian School of Art (now Tasmanian College of the Arts) to allow former students to undertake residencies in the oh-so-cultural city. Michael Herr’s DISPATCHES – Bite The Book

https://bitethebook.com/2015/04/03/michael-herr-dispatches

Book Reviews and Views. April 3, 2015. Michael Herr’s DISPATCHES. This is one of the best pieces of war writing I have ever read, fiction or nonfiction and is an outstanding and terrifying piece of journalism. Michael Herr captures, distills and transmits to the reader the pure essence of the Vietnam War. It’s hypocrisy, it’s insanity, it’s music, it’s soul. The complete and utter, unadulterated complicated mess. Format: Paperback (198mm x 129mm x 19mm). Country of Publication: United Kingdom. You might ...

Roxane Gay’s BAD FEMINIST – Bite The Book

https://bitethebook.com/2015/03/12/roxane-gay-bad-feminist

Book Reviews and Views. March 12, 2015. March 12, 2015. Roxane Gay’s BAD FEMINIST. Was an unforgettable novel that was brutally honest, confronting and powerfully written. In this brilliant collection of essays Roxane Gay applies this same style to the modern world in essays that cover everything from gender, race, politics and popular mainstream culture. I most enjoyed her deconstructions of books, music and movies; in particular. Her perspective on and the way she conveys this in her essays is nuanced ...

https://bitethebook.com/2015/02/18/jamie-kornegays-soil

Book Reviews and Views. February 18, 2015. February 18, 2015. Peppered with a great cast of odd and unusual characters, including a bizarrely injured woodsman and a sex-addicted Sheriff’s Deputy, Korengay delivers a novel above and beyond the Coen Brothers comparisons. With just the right amount of wicked humour Korengay tells the story of a man driven to the brink, a brink only he can see coming, which he is determined to slip down. Classification: Modern and contemporary fiction (post c 1945). Click to...

Book Reviews and Views. April 6, 2015. April 4, 2015. Book Diets (Not Diet Books). Originally posted on Boomerang Books. Book Diets (Not Diet Books). There has been a lot of controversy recently about different diet books out on the market and while eating healthy is very important we also mustn’t forget to feed out minds. Book Reviews and Views. March 16, 2015. Ben Aaronovitch’s BROKEN HOMES. The fourth instalment in the Peter Grant books continues the upward trajectory for this fantastic series, figuratively and somewhat literally. This time the case involves a repository for possible magic truly terrifying; London’s architecture. Until then if you have read this series, DO IT! Format: Paperback (198mm x 132mm x 24mm). Kazuo Ishiguro’s THE REMAINS OF THE DAY – Bite The Book

Book Reviews and Views. April 13, 2015. April 18, 2015. Kazuo Ishiguro’s THE REMAINS OF THE DAY. I have not seen the film based on this book and after all the guffaw over Ishiguro’s departure with. I wanted to read the novel most people seem to consider his best work. (Or at least their favourite Ishiguro novel). Was a departure from Ishiguro’s other works needs to have a re-read of his books. Memory is a strong running theme throughout the three books I have read as is a nostalgia for what is being ...
