The Pitfalls of Forced Positivity | Painting the Grey Area
https://paintingthegreyarea.wordpress.com/2015/01/03/the-pitfalls-of-forced-positivity
Painting the Grey Area. The Pitfalls of Forced Positivity. January 3, 2015. This was attributed on Facebook to someone called fudgecrumpet. *shrug*. Does that seem backwards? It isn’t. Does it seem like I’m about to sell you the One Simple Weird Trick for finding happiness? And I don’t want to do that to you. Image by John Packman. Happiness does feel good, of course, and pain feels bad, so it’s understandable that we would try our best to run towards one and away from the other. And there is nothing...

Painting the Grey Area. Wherein I plug my nose and wade into the vaccine debate. February 7, 2015. There is nary an issue that makes me more grateful to be childfree than the current debate around vaccines. Hoo boy. I’ve seen more knee-jerking on both sides than two battling troupes of Irish step dancers. We’re going to have to update the taboo dinner-table topics to include sex, politics, religion,. Lest our civilization devolve into mortal warfare. Some vaccines are pretty clearly a good idea. It is no...

Painting the Grey Area. Should you change for the sake of your relationship? Published on elephant journal). November 18, 2014. Actually, what needs to change is that question. All relationships change the people who are in them. Nobody goes through the fire trial of romantic love and comes out the same on the other side. Continue to elephant journal. To read the full text. Painting the Grey Area. Literacy Privilege: How I Learned to Check Mine Instead of Making Fun of People’s Grammar on the Internet. November 26, 2012. My name is Chandra, and I am a recovering grammar snob. It’s a tough habit to break, though. Prescriptivists. But when a poor newbie on a discussion forum introduces himself with “hi im jonny n i like wachin x facter” and gets linguistically skewered by someone because they personally hate the pants off of Simon Cowell. It might turn out through subsequent ...

Queer Kids of Queer Parents Against Gay Marriage! I just read Resist the Gay Marriage Agenda! The first (and so far, only) post on the new blog Queer Kids of Queer Parents Against Gay Marriage! I think I saw it linked on Kate Bornstein. 8216;s Twitter feed. It’s a great read. Two quotes that really jumped out at me:. And, the one that really grabbed me (in both quotes, emphasis mine):. Once they can be at home with the kids, there’s no reason for them to be political, after all! Feed for this Entry.

Adventures of a Middle-Aged Boy. Rants, Reviews and Reflections. On God and Gays. On God and Gays. 12 October, 2013. Earlier this week I took part in a debate hosted by the UCD Law Society. The topic: “This house believes God loves gay people too.” It will come as no surprise to those who know me that I was arguing against the motion. Below is my speech as prepared and more-or-less as delivered. In Leviticus 18:22 he says: “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination....There&#...

Charlie and his human: Random racing ruminations: Week 16, Perseverence
http://charlieandhishuman.blogspot.com/2015/01/random-racing-ruminations-week-16.html
Charlie and his human. Monday, January 19, 2015. Random racing ruminations: Week 16, Perseverence. Saturday (4.0 mile run). Mile 1 = 9:15. Mile 2 = 9:04. Mile 3 = 9:32. Mile 4 = 9:31. Sunday (3.0 mile run). Mile 1 = 9:42. Mile 2 = 9:49. Mile 3 = 9:15. I've been dwelling on perseverance lately. In watching Lily learn about the world and observing her experience the most casual of ordinary happenings, I see her persist and persevere on a regular basis. Then some serious self-talk took place. I went upstair...

Charlie and his human: Corn cob trays bring on years of age
http://charlieandhishuman.blogspot.com/2015/03/corn-cob-trays-bring-on-years-of-age.html
Charlie and his human. Monday, March 2, 2015. Corn cob trays bring on years of age. It's that time of year again: my birthday. I've blogged about age in the past. Once last year, several months after my birthday, I wrote a post titled The years of age. At the time I was inspired by the beautiful weather and the delicious beer in my hand. I was thinking about my health status and how time was slowly starting to change me. Two days later, Lily was born. The corn cob tray moments bring me more joy than I ca...

Charlie and his human: Random Racing Ruminations: Week 9, Inspiration
http://charlieandhishuman.blogspot.com/2015/03/random-racing-ruminations-week-9.html
Charlie and his human. Sunday, March 8, 2015. Random Racing Ruminations: Week 9, Inspiration. There are nine more weeks until the Lincoln Half Marathon. My runs scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday didn't happen. Extra long hours put in at work have zapped every last amount of energy. While I abandoned my plans for runs on both days, I was determined to accomplish my long run Saturday. The bright sun and mild temperatures were the motivation fueling my excitement to hit the sidewalks of Omaha. My decent bu...

http://charlieandhishuman.blogspot.com/2015/02/random-racing-ruminations-week-13-gains.html
Charlie and his human. Sunday, February 8, 2015. Random racing ruminations: Week 13, Gains. Mile 1 = 9:07. Mile 2 = 9:03. Mile 3 = 8:49. Mile 4 = 8:44. Mile 5 = 8:53. Mile 1 = 8:06. Mile 2 = 8:26. Mile 2.93 = 9:32. Overall, I can't be too frustrated with these two runs. I'm making gains, even if they are somewhat miniscule. I'm hoping every week's slight gain will compound as I press on. This weekend my thoughts focused on humble, small-scale progress. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Random racing ru...

Charlie and his human: Random racing ruminations: Week 12, Viewing the unfavorable favorably
http://charlieandhishuman.blogspot.com/2015/02/random-racing-ruminations-week-12.html
Charlie and his human. Saturday, February 14, 2015. Random racing ruminations: Week 12, Viewing the unfavorable favorably. After getting back out on the sidewalks last weekend, this week turned into another string of days without running. Tuesday I had a five mile run planned. It didn't happen. I put in a long work day and equally long night working. Wednesday I finally got the chest cold people have been sharing with each other the last month. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Charlie and his human: Achieved another year
http://charlieandhishuman.blogspot.com/2013/03/achieved-another-year.html
Charlie and his human. Sunday, March 3, 2013. I don't feel any older. Time seems to go by faster the older you get. Honestly, I'm not quite sure what it means to "feel" old. I'm certain it will happen at one point, and then, maybe, I'll feel wiser, accomplished, or fulfilled. Since the passage of time has not left me with any profound feelings of age, I wonder why each year increasingly seems to speed by faster than the previous one. Am I trapped in some strange birthday paradox? The human appears content.

Charlie and his human: Random Racing Rumination: Week 7, Sacrifice can lead to great feelings
http://charlieandhishuman.blogspot.com/2015/03/random-racing-rumination-week-7.html
Charlie and his human. Tuesday, March 17, 2015. Random Racing Rumination: Week 7, Sacrifice can lead to great feelings. I'm not trying to be a hero. I don't care much about my pace when running or my final time when completing a race. I'm training for the Lincoln Half-Marathon because it is a personal challenge- a mental and physical one. I just want to finish the face and feel good at the end of it. I want to run this race the healthy way. But it was far from easy. I pushed myself to fight through picki...

Charlie and his human: Random Racing Ruminations: Week 7, The unexpected around the curve
http://charlieandhishuman.blogspot.com/2015/03/random-racing-ruminations-week-7.html
Charlie and his human. Thursday, March 19, 2015. Random Racing Ruminations: Week 7, The unexpected around the curve. Before I left work today I went for a four-mile run around the lake. The trail is a moderately challenging one, with multiple inclines and declines. And many twists and turns. This run had me dwelling on the unexpected around the curve. The Mallard Duck sitting brightly, standing out from the brown background. The other runners, appearing to be moving much faster than me. Mile 1 = 8:14.

Painting the Grey Area
Painting the Grey Area. It’s time for us to have an open discussion about rape fantasies. February 16, 2015. I have a small dilemma – I want to write about the. 50 Shades of Grey. Here are the issues at hand:. Is a hugely successful story that is said to glorify rape and abuse; some people think this means all straight women secretly want domineering alpha-male husbands. Some people fear this is teaching impressionable youths terrible things about relationships. A LOT of people. Even feminist people&...

Painting the Hamptons
Observing the Beauty of the East End. Saturday, August 15, 2015. Summer Still Lifes and Landscapes. Summertime food shopping is a visual treat. Everywhere I look, I see a painting. Squash piled beneath sunflowers and beautiful arranged fruit are still life vignettes. A cornfield bordering a barn, is a landscape painting. Ordinary kitchen items when pared with summer's bounty become painterly. Is a way to visit the Hamptons and North Fork vicariously. I am fortunate to pickup Edible. Sunday, August 9, 2015.
