The miracle of modern medicine | Sham Bus
https://shambus.wordpress.com/2015/08/10/the-miracle-of-modern-medicine
Posted by: Laura M. August 10, 2015. The miracle of modern medicine. I left home two months ago today. What a couple of months it’s been, across two continents with plenty of ups and downs. It will be on to a third continent in just over a week, then finally back home to round out the 80 days. I am definitely ready to be home. Why not have ridiculous puffball sandals? Today has been more of the same: work with Emma, discovering yet another set of strange tonal changes, lunch, and work on my conference pr...

Banfora, le paradis terrestre | Sham Bus
https://shambus.wordpress.com/2015/07/08/banfora-le-paradis-terrestre
Posted by: Laura M. July 8, 2015. Banfora, le paradis terrestre. Time to recount the rest of our holiday weekend adventures! We arrived at another small booth, where we parked the car in the shade and paid our entrance fees ($2/person for international tourists, $1/person for Burkinabe nationals). From there, we walked. Nate and I went for a jog in the late afternoon and we enjoyed a bottle of champagne in the evening that Barkissa had brought over for our 4. T minus one week til I go to France! Notify m...

A long, frustrating week | Sham Bus
https://shambus.wordpress.com/2015/07/14/a-long-frustrating-week
Posted by: Laura M. July 14, 2015. A long, frustrating week. Happy Bastille Day, everyone! Though I somehow doubt there will be any celebrations here in Burkina, and I’ll be just narrowly missing them in France. This week has been one of those trying fieldwork weeks where you ask yourself, why do I do this again? Anyhow, we are about to head out, so I’m going to throw the rest of my stuff in a bag and hit the road. More soon from either Ouaga or France! Laquo; Banfora, le paradis terrestre.

About | Sham Bus
https://shambus.wordpress.com/about
Sham Bus seems to be a central focus of my travels. I often inadvertently end up on modes of transport that leave something to be desired in terms of comfort or organization, and yet I always get where I’m trying to go with a couple more doses of life experience and a good story or two. You’re taking me back to bus rides in Cambodia and Thailand 50 years ago (also a riverboat up the Mekong). Great blog, Laura. On July 2, 2011. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Posted by: Laura M. June 30, 2015. Back from the village! It’s always so hard to write these posts, since so much happens in just 48 hours in a village. Or rather, I have so many observations most of the time spent in village is spent sitting around, waiting for the next thing to happen. I’ll do my best to recap. It was getting dark at this point, so we settled into our evening routine of the radio, making strong sweet green tea over charcoals, and chatting. Dinner was chunks of yams (or cassava? It has ...

The shortest post for the longest time | Sham Bus
https://shambus.wordpress.com/2015/08/01/the-shortest-post-for-the-longest-time
Posted by: Laura M. August 1, 2015. The shortest post for the longest time. Here we are in August already, and it’s been two weeks without a blog post. I guess my time in France was a vacation from Sham Bus as well as the field. This post will have to be just a short overview or no one will want to read it (and I won’t want to write it). Survey work to do on the other dialect of Seenku, and basic elicitation on what may be a unrecognized mixed language in the area. 16 more days, Burkina, let’s do this.

Afternoon excursions (known to most as errands) | Sham Bus

Posted by: Laura M. June 24, 2015. Afternoon excursions (known to most as errands). It has been hot here. I don’t think it rained at all in the past three days, until this afternoon, when the wind sprung up out of no where, carrying in an opaque wall of tan-gray dust with sheets of heavy rain soon after. I am hoping this will cool the air off even a few degrees for my village trip tomorrow. Mark my words: I will get my money back. This isn’t over, Royal Air Maroc. I will not be worn down. A very West African few days | Sham Bus
https://shambus.wordpress.com/2015/08/03/a-very-west-african-few-days
Posted by: Laura M. August 3, 2015. A very West African few days. I feel like I’ve lived some of the most ludicrously African days since I’ve been back to Burkina. I’ll pull out some of the most memorable vignettes, for better or for worse. One of Kate’s old consultants, Sali, was holding the last day of her wedding celebration that afternoon, so we put on our fancy bazin. I eventually grew tired of watching more and more people come out, dance, give money, with no sign of the bride and asked Zaki to tak...
