Paper Ponderings: Finished fragments
https://paperponderings.blogspot.com/2015/08/finished-fragments.html
FIONA DEMPSTER - CALLIGRAPHIC AND BOOK ARTIST. Tuesday, August 11, 2015. I went to the framers today. I took quite a few pieces in preparation for our exhibition at Noosa Regional Gallery. In particular I wanted to see how it would be to frame my works "Under Construction". They are mixed media, with twigs and feathers and fabric and thread and prints, so it was going to take a bit of time. Still I am hopeful. Here are some fragments of the finished work. One of my 'haiku-poems' about building nests.
Paper Ponderings: Sitting stitching
https://paperponderings.blogspot.com/2015/08/sitting-stitching.html
FIONA DEMPSTER - CALLIGRAPHIC AND BOOK ARTIST. Sunday, August 9, 2015. I had to spend a few days away this week, stuck inside in a room where I couldn't do much. I read a lot, which was great, but I was also glad I remembered to take along my little sewing bag. I begin this piece back in 2013. And just take it with me when I travel or know I will be sitting around for lengthy periods of time. And then I thought I'd try a weird little cut out square - wobbly, but whimsical. Posted by Fiona Dempster. I agr...

FIONA DEMPSTER - CALLIGRAPHIC AND BOOK ARTIST. Thursday, August 6, 2015. 8220;When a reader falls in love with a book, it leaves its essence inside him, like radioactive fallout in an arable field, and after that there are certain crops that will no longer grow in him, while other, stranger, more fantastic growths may occasionally be produced.β. This quote has been in my quote-bank for years I think, but I have avoided using it because of the harshness of the imagery evoked by radioactive fallout. I love...

FIONA DEMPSTER - CALLIGRAPHIC AND BOOK ARTIST. Thursday, May 21, 2015. 8220;When we engage in what we are naturally suited to do, our work takes on the quality of play and it is play that stimulates creativity.β. As I have gone along it has become abundantly clear to me that in fact, in order to get better at your art, you need to practise yes; but also to play. The amazing things that can appear from a session or two of 'what if? I don't think that play time is ever wasted; the opportunities it affords ...
Paper Ponderings: Markers
https://paperponderings.blogspot.com/2015/05/markers.html
FIONA DEMPSTER - CALLIGRAPHIC AND BOOK ARTIST. Sunday, May 17, 2015. And so I make books. I am making 52 small books to mark and acknowledge that each week in 2014 at least one woman was killed by a partner or former partner. That number has almost doubled so far this year to two per week and my heart is filled by sadness and despair at the thought. In keeping track of these deaths and increasing our awareness. I'm nowhere near finished. I have stitched 30 covers - lots still to do, then pierce the p...

Charlton Stitcher: January 2015
http://charltonstitcher.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Working with mixed media stitched textiles gives me great pleasure. As well as the joy in the art of making and exploring, there are the friendships formed as work grows. Wednesday, 28 January 2015. Back and front stitched sketch. I have been experimenting with stitch since Christmas. Several ideas are running around in my head, all seeming still to involve black and white at the moment, with just occasional splashes of colour from time to time. Sunday, 25 January 2015. January, with all its cold greynes...

Working with mixed media stitched textiles gives me great pleasure. As well as the joy in the art of making and exploring, there are the friendships formed as work grows. Monday, 27 July 2015. Playing with pixels, windows and bridges. I'm going to eastern Scotland and the Orkney Islands soon and I'm going to take print outs of some images that I've generated as a result of the Pixeladies. I recently found myself buying a small selection of threads from Patricia Wood of Mulberry Silks. I'm still trying to...

Working with mixed media stitched textiles gives me great pleasure. As well as the joy in the art of making and exploring, there are the friendships formed as work grows. Sunday, 28 December 2014. Cotswolds and New Year greetings. Before Christmas, I was so busy preparing for the arrival of family visitors that my intended post didn't appear. We had a wonderful time - busy, noisy and great fun and the grandchildren were a delight as always. Friday, 19 December 2014. Flavour of the year. It has seemed thi...

Tuesday, 26 May 2015. Textures of the outback . There has been much experimenting again in the studio this week. For the moment I have put the story of our land on hold though having had some very good ideas from my partner Steve about how I can present the work, I am pretty excited about getting back to it soon. In April I did a workshop with Noela Mills. I bought some transparent paper from Sydney and have been working on it, seeing how I can make marks and get some textures. Playing with different...

Paper Ponderings
FIONA DEMPSTER - CALLIGRAPHIC AND BOOK ARTIST. Thursday, April 12, 2018. 8220;If a problem is fixable, if a situation is such that you can do something about it, then there is no need to worry. If itβs not fixable, then there is no help in worrying. There is no benefit in worrying whatsoever.β. Oh my goodness I love this one. I actually quote it (or more accurately, paraphrase it) every now and again because it is so apt and so true. No need or no point. Simple. Posted by Fiona Dempster. And the words "i...
Paper Console - Battery-Free Entertainment
Welcome to Paper Console! Dedicated to taking great strides backwards in the ever evolving world of electronic entertainment, I bring you the paper console. No batteries required, and safe from any aliens' attacks via EMP, you get to "play" these classics through an amazingly primitive UI of page flipping, making you long for the convenience of the antiquated goto. The classic game of Ping-Pong, with each page comes the critical decision:. Should I move up. Or should I move down. This looks really lame.
