Participatory Planning: Food for Thought

http://participatoryplanning.blogspot.com/2009/05/food-for-thought.html

Saturday, May 9, 2009. Some favorite quotes from the reading I've been doing lately. 8220;Transformative populism emphasizes diversity as well as unity. Transformative populists seek to unite people based on their common oppression, but also seek to use the resulting coalition to battle each group’s distinct oppression… Instead of expecting and working for the disappearance of distinctions such as race… differences are preserved and valued.” – Marie Kennedy and Chris...8220;Development is ultimately not ...

Participatory Planning: What the heck is participatory planning, anyhow?

http://participatoryplanning.blogspot.com/2009/04/what-heck-is-participatory-planning.html

Monday, April 27, 2009. What the heck is participatory planning, anyhow? The dictionary definition of the term (well, OK, Wikipedia's). Is "an urban planning paradigm which emphasizes involving the entire community in the strategic and management processes of urban planning or community-level planning processes, urban or rural. It is often considered as part of community development processes.". Should be given control over making land use decisions. Almost unanimously, students said "absolutely not!

Participatory Planning: I Heart These Folks

http://participatoryplanning.blogspot.com/2009/04/i-heart-these-folks.html

Tuesday, April 28, 2009. I Heart These Folks. In doing research for groups around the country that do work similar to ours at the HD-OD. I found New York's Center for Urban Pedagogy. They combine art, education, activism and planning - a winning combination, I'd say. They work with community members and youth, to map, photograph, draw, interpret and create visions for neighborhoods all around NYC. I'm also a big fan of their Making Policy Public. From the Making Policy Public. April 28, 2009 at 10:27 PM.

Participatory Planning: Bad economy = good civic engagement?

http://participatoryplanning.blogspot.com/2009/05/bad-economy-good-civic-engagement.html

Saturday, May 9, 2009. Bad economy = good civic engagement? From Tuesday's Washington Post says that civic engagement is higher than it's been since the 1970s, when commute times ballooned along with the prevalence of single-parent families, or families with both parents working full-time. A tiny silver lining for all the economic gloom and doom, perhaps? On a similar note, a coworker just told me about WNYU's Brian Lehrer and his " Uncommon Economic Indicators. There's also some photographic gems:.

Participatory Planning: The New Grassroots

http://participatoryplanning.blogspot.com/2009/05/while-back-left-leg-effort-sent-me.html

Sunday, May 17, 2009. A while back, Left Leg Effort. Sent me Urbanophile Aaron Renn's blog post. Via the excellent Streetsblog. About "The New Grass Roots." He succinctly puts how the internet has become a game-changer for bottom-up organizations:. I was lucky to have the chance to speak with Rosten Woo, the current Executive Director of the Center. Which I wrote about earlier. An innovative charter high school which, as the name implies, requires experiential exploration of New York City for all of its ...
