Golden Mallard Challenge: 6 months in…Longhaven
http://patchlistchallenge.blogspot.com/2015/06/6-months-inlonghaven.html
The Original Patch List Challenge. Sunday, 21 June 2015. 6 months in…Longhaven. I thought it was about time to post my first post of the year. Not unsurprising really seeing how crap it's been. Spring passed by without a notable bird to be seen and now we're in the glorious days of mid summer and not expecting much now for another couple of months. Best bird of the year is a crossbill, of the common variety. But expect a better second half performance, or else I'll start a new patch in Singapore…. Thanks...
Golden Mallard Challenge: Seasonally adjusted figures
http://patchlistchallenge.blogspot.com/2015/06/seasonally-adjusted-figures.html
The Original Patch List Challenge. Tuesday, 16 June 2015. The past few weeks have offered some great highlights of South-east Asian birds and wildlife. Just a pity that most of it has happened off-patch. In other news, a short cross border raid into southern Malaysia connected with rail-babbler among many other quality birds, and served to remind me of just how bird-poor the forests in Singapore are. But not entirely without interest, as I discovered when I was lucky enough to come across a Sunda pan...
Golden Mallard Challenge: April 2015
http://patchlistchallenge.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
The Original Patch List Challenge. Sunday, 26 April 2015. After a two month hiatus, it is good to be back on the patch. There have been some changes, not exactly a fall of hoopoes but a change of seasons as some of the non-breeding northerners depart and a few new species creep in. First, what did I miss? Friday, 24 April 2015. A steady(ish) trickle of migs. So the massive influx of hoopoe. Exotic surprises notwithstanding, the steady arrival of usual suspects like blackcap. And (finally) house martin.

The Original Patch List Challenge. Monday, 27 July 2015. Kak all at sea. Another lame seawatch yesterday am, with tystie. Once again the highlight, however a fine sanderling. Golden Mallard Challenge: August 2015
http://patchlistchallenge.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
The Original Patch List Challenge. Saturday, 29 August 2015. Wait 'til Reg posts…. Then you'll know what migrants are…. Well done to the Reg who spent 45 minutes trying to get a glimpse of a bird just because it went 'tac'! Friday, 28 August 2015. Been good lately. Couple of Pied Flies, heaps of Spotties. Redstarts galore, friendly Tree Pipits. Just reached the ton, aka 90.09% Any suggestion of taking performance limiting drugs in order to reset my average is strenuously denied. Tuesday, 25 August 2015.

Patch Birding Ireland: Blacksod
http://patchbirdingireland.blogspot.com/p/blacksod.html
The Patchwork Challenge Irish Minileague Blog. Blacksod, The Mullet, Co. Mayo by Dave Suddaby. 8217; I was up for it! So, and with little thought, I decided that I would just ‘stick-the-pin’ in the map, centred on the garden and draw a 1.5km radius around! With a little re-gigging I was then left with a ‘patch’ that consists mainly of rock-strewn Tarmon Hill …. Oh dear, maybe I should have gone ‘long and thin’ with the aim of taking in more habitat? So what have I got to work with? Top of the garden.

Galley Head Birding: November 2014
http://galleyheadbirding.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Tuesday, November 18, 2014. Well, the autumn fizzled out without really ever getting started hereabouts! Haven't really been out and apart from a well-timed whooper swan. From the jax, and a goldeneye. On the lake, there's been nothing in the way of year tick action either ( 126. So it was with great excitement and anticipation that I found myself on the shores of Lough Gill, County Kerry yesterday for a spot of dirty twitching. And the target? Ireland's 4th ever american coot. The male lesser scaup.

Galley Head Birding: October 2014
http://galleyheadbirding.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Tuesday, October 14, 2014. Blimey - a month since I've been on here! Apart from a rather bird-packed few days on Shetland, I've seen very little. Not that I haven't been out slogging round Galley most days, its just there's been very little to see. Thus far into October I've managed siskin. For the year at Galley. A bit pants. Until today. With the wind finally in the south-east, I was quietly optimistic that there'd be a bit more around today. And so it proved, with a fine yellow-browed warbler.
Wanstead Birder: July 2015
http://www.wansteadbirder.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
Latterly mostly about travel. Friday, 24 July 2015. So what's been going on? Obviously there is never a dull moment at Chateau L, but there's not a lot to tell. This week however has been punctuated by two momentous twitches. Well, one momentous, one semi-pleasing. The first was a Green Sandpiper. On the deck. Although it was my 5th Green Sand. Please tell us it is not so? And if it is, please make sure to release some extra-special waders (or ducks) from your magic satchel before you go! If an instituti...

Galley Head Birding: hammer time
http://galleyheadbirding.blogspot.com/2015/04/hammer-time.html
Monday, April 20, 2015. The first few years of stomping round Galley revealed that yellowhammers. Were mucho scarce in these parts, with only one or two sightings a year. In recent times, birds have been hanging around in winter, and, during the last year of the bird atlas, one male was even singing for most of the summer. In the last two years, there have been two to three pairs breeding, and hopefully numbers will increase again this season. Here's a nice male I got quite close to this morning.

Galley Head Birding: ears and hammers
http://galleyheadbirding.blogspot.com/2015/04/ears-and-hammers.html
Tuesday, April 28, 2015. Not been an awful lot of variety going through Galley of late. Did stumble across a few wheatears the other morning - the first photo opportunity I've had this spring. A few were bathing in the recently refreshed puddles down the top lane. Couldn't resist another go at the showy male yellowhammer. Labels: big lens barry. Blurred and on the huh. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Buzzard and Continental Cormorant, Tralee. The magic Autumn four. And a couple more.

Patch Birding Ireland: Brownstown Head
http://patchbirdingireland.blogspot.com/p/brownstown-head.html
The Patchwork Challenge Irish Minileague Blog. Brownstown Head, Co. Waterford by Paul M. Walsh. Brownstown Head forms the SE corner of Tramore Bay, in east Co Waterford, and though it doesn’t project as dramatically as some south-coast headlands (notably Hook Head, Co Wexford, 11 km east), it’s certainly produced the goods over the years. Up to the mid 1970s, Brownstown was best known for having produced old records of Sociable Plover. And, I like to think, Great Auk. And some large Sooty. A major dip in...

Golden Mallard Challenge
The Original Patch List Challenge. Friday, 13 April 2018. It's bean a while. It certainly has been a while since I got a full fat patch tick. Still no sign of any snowy owl. Tuesday, 10 April 2018. As Basil says, it has indeed been quiet. Once again I didn't miss anything vital by being off-patch and overseas for a week or so. And whilst I tried "getting in amongst it" on my return, I haven't managed a great deal, with just chiffchaff. To show for my efforts - haven't even had a wheatear. High excitement...
