The Death of Celilo | columbia river highway
https://columbiariverhighway.wordpress.com/2014/09/03/the-death-of-celilo
A Poem in Stone. The Death of Celilo. September 3, 2014. September 4, 2014. Celilo Falls. For those not familiar with this place, Celilo is pronounced Suh LIE low. It is the name given to a magnificent section of the Columbia River just above The Dalles. (Again, for the uninitiated, that’s pronounced The DALZ and is a french word meaning cobble stones or paving blocks – which accurately describes the bed of the Columbia River at this location.). The magnificent Celilo Falls in all its glory. Celilo is go...

A Poem in Stone. Robert Lee Ringer: Still Tooting His Own Horn (or Ringing His Own Bell). December 1, 2014. December 1, 2014. One of his descendants, Robert L. Ringer, recorded what he knew of his ancestors for the sake of younger generations. Eventually Ringer left the newspaper business and moved to Portland to enter a new field contracting. He did cement work, and his name, Robert L. Ringer, can be seen on many of the sidewalks around Portland. Karl P. Bilner designed the bridge, similar in style ...

A Poem in Stone. Those Beautiful Arched Railings. April 2, 2014. November 15, 2014. Several months ago I shared about the dry masonry retaining walls along the Columbia River Highway. Here is a bit more about the work done by the Italian stonemasons. Here are some of the traditional tools used by stonemasons:. In the face of ongoing technology, masons continue today much as they have for centuries, because sometimes, there’s just no substitute for doing it the old way. Many years after the construction o...

The Mitchell Point Tunnel | columbia river highway
https://columbiariverhighway.wordpress.com/2014/01/27/the-mitchell-point-tunnel
A Poem in Stone. 8220;Motoring” through the Mitchell Point Tunnel – the Tunnel of Many Vistas. I’m going to TRY to start a blog. I’ll post from time to time some of the information and stories that didn’t make it into the book because of word count limitations. (My publisher told me I could have 38,000 40,000 words. I had over 42,000, so I didn’t want to push it any more than that! So here is my first post. I need to know if I’m doing this right. Can you see the words? The Mitchell Point Tunnel. Not very...

Blame it on the Pig! | columbia river highway
https://columbiariverhighway.wordpress.com/2014/03/03/90
A Poem in Stone. Blame it on the Pig! March 3, 2014. November 15, 2014. It shouldn’t have been a problem. After all, that’s what pigs did naturally. But when this particular pig did what came naturally, the outcome was NOT good! You’ll read more about him in the book, but here’s a story that had to be cut in the interest of keeping the word count within the publisher’s limits. But the day of the pig incident was one of those rare occasions when John Yeon lost it. Yeon believed in spending whatever money ...

A Poem in Stone. Margaret Darling Hackett Newell Henderson. January 29, 2015. February 2, 2015. In the book, Building the Columbia River Highway, I devote one very short chapter to Margaret Henderson. I wish I knew more about her, as everything I read seems to describe a woman of exceptional courage and fortitude. I recently learned a bit more from her great-granddaughter, Judy Devasier. After Harry A. Hackett and Elisabeth Margaret were divorced (date not available), Mr. Hackett married Emma, a ...In th...

What in the Sam Hill … ? | columbia river highway
https://columbiariverhighway.wordpress.com/2014/03/14/what-in-the-sam-hill
A Poem in Stone. What in the Sam Hill …? March 14, 2014. November 15, 2014. Sam Hill. There was a real person by that name–at least two, actually–but both of them postdated the expression by a hundred years or more. Even so, the question “What in the Sam Hill …? This photo shows Sam’s “chateau” on the north side of the Columbia River, about 100 miles above Portland. It is now a museum of history and art–and of Sam Hill, himself. Giant girders supported the roof, on top of which was an eight inch layer of...

columbia river highway | A Poem in Stone | Page 2
https://columbiariverhighway.wordpress.com/page/2
A Poem in Stone. February 19, 2014. Bottom to top: railroad tunnel, Interstate 84, Historic Columbia River Highway. Bonneville was well-loved by locals who liked to picnic there, and eventually it became a railroad stop. This photo was taken from the deck of the stern-wheeler, Columbia Gorge, out of Cascade Locks (with Captain Tom Cramblett on this particular day). Spring is coming, folks! Time to begin thinking about being out in the beautiful sunshine. How about a cruise on the river? February 5, 2014.

Wine in the 'peg. Still around – sort of. July 26, 2011. Looks like it’s been nearly two years since my last post. Yeesh! In my own defence, I’m spending most of my time (and energy) on Twitter these days. You’ll find wine reviews and commentary there, just look for @alecstuart. But the 140-character limit is a bit frustrating, so I may return here for the occasional longer post. And I’m also doing some writing for http:/ www.savourwinnipeg.com. So you can watch for me there too. August 22, 2009. Are inl...

The Lost Mandate of Parliament. December 6, 2010. The Lahore High Court (LHC) has barred the government from amending the blasphemy law, till the final decision of the court in Asia Bibi’s case. Earlier, in the same matter, Chief Justice Khawaja Muhammad Sharif directed President Asif Ali Zardari and the governor of Punjab to abstain from making any move to pardon blasphemy convict. Or Can a court prohibit parliament from performance of its constitutional function? As, the parliament and democratic proce...

A blog about the truth. Today, it's important for all of us to find our own way to share the truth. Mainstream media and the billionaires will not silence our voices. Monday, July 27, 2015. I'm Not Grateful for Compromise. But I am grateful for every activist out there who is pushing hard - in their own way - to save our public schools.
