People Listen to It. Thoughts on Music and Other Worldly Delights. Laquo; Rock the Vote? Herbie and the Grammy. February 12, 2008 by Brian. In light of the in-depth commentary that previously appeared on this blog concerning Herbie Hancock’s River: The Joni Letters. I’ve copied NPRs coverage of the win below. I think the write up is fine, but I want to point out one thing the writer says that caught my attention: “From a distance, River. Charlie Hunter’s Bob Marley tribute album? February 11, 2008 –.

I don’t know what to do with Pearl Jam’s new Barak recording, “Barak Around the Clock.”. Sorry, It’s broken]. I suppose it’s meant to be funny; or maybe “edgy,” like, ironic, you know. Said with rising inflection. It’s pretty stupid, as political statements go and as music; cornball, whatever. 8221; Am I really that old? You are commenting ...

People Listen to It. Thoughts on Music and Other Worldly Delights. I'm an assistant professor of musicology at the University of Illinois, a half-capable sax player, erstwhile recorder player, and father of children who are just old enough to start developing their own pop culture tastes. I've written about Thelonious Monk, Jazz historiography, Tom Waits, and cultural memory in American music. My book, Monk's Music. Is just out from the University of California Press, and can be found on Amazon here.

Meh, why not?: February 2008

Meh, why not? This'll probably be mostly about music, but what's really keeping it from being about anything else? Wednesday, February 27, 2008. Some Connections Between Miles and Bjork. Which isn't even in commercial production yet. Another link between Bjork and Miles Davis is how they treat their own melodies in live performances. One thing I`m always astounded by when I listen to The Complete Concert 1964: My Funny Valentine and Four More. And here's that recording of All Blues. Links to this post.

Meh, why not? This'll probably be mostly about music, but what's really keeping it from being about anything else? Thursday, October 05, 2006. Is it art or just simply crap? Taking this very idea of faulty machinery to yet another level, I want to pose this question: Can the music created with the use of faulty electronics be considered chance or aleatoric music much like that of John Cage? Or does this border on trying to legitimize shitty music? Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Meh, why not? This'll probably be mostly about music, but what's really keeping it from being about anything else? Tuesday, January 29, 2008. Another problem however is a plain lack of organization. And to help, I have decided to make a checklist of sounds that I want. Train approaching warning (from the platform). Imminent departure (different tunes on different platforms). Assorted recorded announcements on the limited express train. Assorted spoken announcements on the local train. Links to this post.

Meh, why not? This'll probably be mostly about music, but what's really keeping it from being about anything else? Saturday, December 22, 2007. Another bit of Ethnomusicology. It was a while ago, but back in October I went to a Taiko. Although this image is generally a bit blurry, you can still see how much the performers wind-up to strike some of the larger drums. And here's a short video. Where you can see some of the grandeur that people portray during performances. Links to this post. I'm currently l...

Tuesday, October 27, 2009. So far from being wrong in that presumption was I that I quickly found myself actually delighted by the book! It is an absolute treasure. For starters, there is the most charming preface I have ever read. Some excerpts:. Then he talks about how it's easy to say what was sung in Vienna at Schubert's church, or at Notre Dame and Westminster Abbey; but what was sung forty miles away at Kuckucksdorf am Donau or Little Cucking? He holds no grudges, even against the atheists. He ...

Thursday, November 5, 2009. Lectures on your own stuff. Rather than embarrass myself by listing the many examples of interesting assumptions I made during my São Paulo unit, I thought I would add my own take on lecturing best practices. 1) Even if you disagree with a canonic point, lecture is not the time to complicate it. Save those problematizing discussions for individual meetings and small seminar situations. And finally, when in doubt, refer to other sage guides on lecturing. It can be quite fun.

Meh, why not? This'll probably be mostly about music, but what's really keeping it from being about anything else? Tuesday, November 27, 2007. An Update Just for the Sake of Updating. I haven't had too many pearls of wisdom that I wanted to share with the world lately, but there is one thing I definitely want to recommend. I was listening to an old episode of This American Life. A couple of weeks ago which encouraged listeners to remix a song. Will let you have as many tracks as are necessary for remixin...

Musicology / Matters: Sounds of Things To Come
http://musicologymatters.blogspot.com/2010/08/sounds-of-things-to-come.html
Tuesday, August 31, 2010. Sounds of Things To Come. In an upcoming issue of The Annual Review of Anthropology. There is an article co-authored by some well-known music scholars arguing for sound in anthropology. Just last month, a deadline arrived for a special issue of The American Quarterly. Academic presses are clearly on-board: there are now readers and handbooks in production or in press. Some institutions are even lending the interdisciplinary field some credence by explicitly recruiting sound ...

Wednesday, February 3, 2010. Syllabus: Music, Media, and the Representation of Difference. It's that time of year again. Here is the syllabus for "Music, Media and the Representation of Difference," a seminar I am leading this semester. We had our first meeting today, and it looks like I have a very bright group of students. I'm quite pleased. (I should have posted this earlier, but my schedule really ran away with me. Normally I post syllabi before. They are finalized.). 102 Bixler Art and Music Center.
