PGCE Geog Blog

Thursday, 9 September 2010. I was told about this website by the Geography Department at the school where I worked. It is a free website where ideas and resources are shared. Hopefully it will come in useful when planning lessons. We can think of a geographic information system (GIS) as an advanced and interactive map. It is a tool which allows us to organise and visualise data in new and practical ways. It allows us to place layer upon layer of data over a basemap made up of real localities. Students go...

http://pgcegeogblog.blogspot.com/2010/08/pakistan-floods-and-wildfires-in-russia.html

Wednesday, 18 August 2010. Pakistan Floods and Wildfires in Russia – Are They Linked? During the last month the news has been filled with stories relating to weather and climate, including floods in Pakistan and a heatwave in Russia. It appears that these two apparently disconnected events have a common cause. Instead, that rain was carried far to the north of Moscow, and then down unusually far south into the mountains of northern Pakistan, where it combined with the usual summer monsoon in Pakistan to ...

Geog on the spot: Global development site - The Guardian

http://geogingonthespot.blogspot.com/2010/09/global-development-site-guardian.html

Geog on the spot. Tuesday, 14 September 2010. Global development site - The Guardian. I started my primary school placement this week, I already have a cold and Ofsted visited the school today, signs of things to come! Today, I came across a new section on the Guardian website, it's based on global development issues rather than news that is disaster-driven. The web link:. Geog on the spot. Friday, 24 September 2010. When two Englishmen meet, their first talk is of weather'. A great quote by Samuel Johnson in The Idler, it's lifted my spirits after having a run-in with the accommodation office at Leicester, hopefully I will be able to tell you more if have anywhere to live on Monday. Back to the quote, weather. Sorry for the lack of illustrations, I blame the accommodation office for wasting my valuable time. I will add more tomorrow. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Geog on the spot: Non-representational geography

http://geogingonthespot.blogspot.com/2010/09/non-representational-geography.html

Geog on the spot. Monday, 27 September 2010. At university, I came across non representational geography by Nigel Thrift, it combined post-structuralism and actor network theory. I've been trying to think how non-representational theory could be used in the classroom, it looks at the act of performance rather than representation and the world in a creative way as the world is complex and difficult to understand. Quakes & Twisters: Tornadoes Blog 3:

http://tectonicsandhazards.blogspot.com/2010/09/tornadoes-blog-3.html

Saturday, 25 September 2010. Tornadoes are made of rapidly spinning air in verticles funnels, with wind possibly exceeding 250mph whilst having the ability to potentially clear a pathway up to a mile wide and 50 miles long. Twisters are often sporn from thunderstorms and can be accompanied by hail. Where the thunderstorms are larger and more persistent they are called supercells which can lead to the most destructive tornadoes. Tornadoes are classified as weak, strong, or violent storms. Violent torn...

Quakes & Twisters: August 2010

http://tectonicsandhazards.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html

Monday, 9 August 2010. This is the first of a series of blogs that i will make regarding earthquakes. So why do earthquakes happen? Intense vibrations, or seismic waves, spread out from the initial point of rupture, the focus, like ripples on a pond. These waves are what makes the ground shake and can travel large distances in all directions. Near the focus, the waves can be very large, making them extremely destructive. Http:/ www.youtube.com/watch? Http:/ www.youtube.com/watch? Monday, 2 August 2010.

Quakes & Twisters: Tornadoes Blog 1

http://tectonicsandhazards.blogspot.com/2010/09/tornadoes-blog-1.html

Sunday, 19 September 2010. So how do tornadoes form? Before thunderstorms develop, a change in wind direction and an increase in wind speed with increasing height creates an invisible, horizontal spinning effect in the lower atmosphere. Rising air within the thunderstorm updraft tilts the rotating air from horizontal to vertical. An area of rotation, 2-6 miles wide, now extends through much of the storm. Most strong and violent tornadoes form within this area of strong rotation. Coventry, United Kingdom.

Behaviorism is an approach to psychology based on the proposition that behavior can be researched scientifically without recourse to inner mental states. All species of animals learn in similar ways by using same guiding principles, to understand the learning processes, they focus on the stimulus and the responses. The behavior is determined by the environment either through association or reinforcement. There are two types of learning theories. Addresses learning of voluntary responses. Whereas conseque...

Saturday, February 19, 2011. To say that this year has been chaos would be a gross under estimation of the truth of it all. I haven't been on line for quite some time and haven't had a moment to lament, rant or rave about anything, possibly a good thing! But after everything that has happened I still feel marginally optimistic. I am not running at optimal, far from it, I am operating on empty and barely managing. Hope the Chaos ends soon and super fabulous teacher kicks in ASAP! Links to this post. I hop...
