A great quote by Samuel Johnson in The Idler, it's lifted my spirits after having a run-in with the accommodation office at Leicester, hopefully I will be able to tell you more if have anywhere to live on Monday. Geog on the spot. Monday, 27 September 2010. At university, I came across non representational geography by Nigel Thrift, it combined post-structuralism and actor network theory. I've been trying to think how non-representational theory could be used in the classroom, it looks at the act of performance rather than representation and the world in a creative way as the world is complex and difficult to understand. Tornadoes are made of rapidly spinning air in verticles funnels, with wind possibly exceeding 250mph whilst having the ability to potentially clear a pathway up to a mile wide and 50 miles long. Twisters are often sporn from thunderstorms and can be accompanied by hail. Monday, 9 August 2010. This is the first of a series of blogs that i will make regarding earthquakes. So why do earthquakes happen? Intense vibrations, or seismic waves, spread out from the initial point of rupture, the focus, like ripples on a pond. These waves are what makes the ground shake and can travel large distances in all directions. Near the focus, the waves can be very large, making them extremely destructive. Sunday, 19 September 2010. So how do tornadoes form? Before thunderstorms develop, a change in wind direction and an increase in wind speed with increasing height creates an invisible, horizontal spinning effect in the lower atmosphere. Rising air within the thunderstorm updraft tilts the rotating air from horizontal to vertical. An area of rotation, 2-6 miles wide, now extends through much of the storm.
