Notes of a Picobrewery (aka: my apartment). Saturday, September 27, 2008. Marzen Ale 2: Brew Log. Added grains to boiling pot. Placed 23 cups water @ 160F into pot. Placed mash in oven set between "warm" and 200F. Checked after 20 min. Temp was 150. Bumped up temp setting. Temp @ 1 hour was 160F. Sparged by pouring water over grains in a strainer. Boiled 2.5 gallons. Added hops at correct times. Put in cold water and ice bath at for 3 hours. Final volume: 1.5 gallons. Final gravity: 1.048.

Measured the specific gravity to be 1.015-1.016. I didn't really like the taste; it was bitter and nasty. Couldn't taste the 1.5 oz of vanilla I put in. Saaz - 3.0%, 0.5 oz, 10 min. Spalt - 2.6%, 0.5 oz, 5 min (used in place of Tettnanger b/c store was out). Calculated IBUs: 25.44. Calculated OG: 1.048 - 1.052. Observed OG: 1.051.
