Karen Rann Artist in Residence at Gairloch Heritage Museum. Sessions took place with people of all ages:. Shipmates’ 4 to 7 year olds, after school. Gairloch High School, S1. Saturday night Sessions – highlife highland youth work. Kinlochewe Lunch Club (adults, plus children from Kinlochewe Primary). Isle View Care Home, Aultbea. Aside from the sessions, many local people gave up their time to relate stories, anecdotes and poems that were recorded as part of the artwork Fish Tales. In the end exhibition.

With 2 new residencies temporally and geographically within a gnat’s crotchet of each other a new blog is begun: Traces of Place. Follow me there if you want! Blogging for me has become an essential tool for keeping track during a residency. I am a lover of note-books but a blog facilitates the sharing of thoughts, feeling and reflections. Karen Rann Artist in Residence at Gairloch Heritage Museum. The exhibition consisted of 2 related installations:. The projected images that constitute Fish Tales. Through research into the fishing industry I realised the impact of the scale change from domestic to industrial, and the ‘improvements’ in increasing catch size including bigger, ‘better’, non-biodegradable nets. Is my response: a net that cannot catch, more void than material, and within it the negative space symbolic of the missing fish.

Visual artist Karen Rann makes sculptures, performances and installations. Projects shown here are all large scale and typically between one and twelve months long. For example, Fat Bird was one element of a year-long project working with a residential home, a day centre and two schools. I am equally happy facilitating smaller projects such as a day creating mobiles for windows, a weekend making processional sculptures for a festival, or a week making big cumulative installations. Hilton of Cadboll Stone. The magnificent Pictish cross-slab from Hilton of Cadboll in Easter Ross, carved between 700 and 800 AD, stood on land now owned by the Glenmorangie company. It is on display as the centre-piece to the Early People gallery at the National Museum of Scotland. At some point the slab broke away from its base, and its Pictish cross-face was chipped off. Then before AD 1676 this face was re-carved as an (unused! Headstone for Alexander Duff and his 3 wives. A job larger than one person.
