When I feel like painting but have nothing specific in mind, I often turn to my second love the garden and some of the flower paintings here could sit equally well in the ‘close ups’ gallery! Close ups and still life.

I use the term ‘landscape’ more loosely than some artists. While for some it covers only natural scenery mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, forests and so on, for me it’s the world outside my own front door. Early morning in the City. Red hut at Rye. Windmill amongst the poppies. Limone on Lake Garda. Close ups and still life.

Murals and trompe l’oeil. Invented by the Greeks, developed by the Romans and taking its name from the French language, trompe l’oeil (literally ‘trick of the eye’) is all about deceiving on a large scale. The ‘trick’ is to use perspective, realistic colour, light and shade to create an image that looks real and appears to be three dimensional. Elephants in the dining room. Seaside in a bathroom. The Folly - As a blank-canvas. The Folly Left hand window. The folly right hand window. The Folly the mouse.

Whether painted, photographed or sculpted, technically a portrait is an artistic representation of a person that aims to be more than a good likeness. I hope to find the life within the subject and to stir the viewer’s imagination. Last rays of summer. Close ups and still life.
