Sunday, October 19, 2014. How To Pluck a Duck: The Wax Method. WARNING: This blog post contains images and discussion pertaining to the process of turning ducks into food. Consider yourself warned.*. We put two more of the Silver Appleyard drakes in the freezer last week. There are 3 left still to do, but because of limited help with both the processing and childcare, it's taking us a long time to complete the task. Unless you don't mind eating them, I suppose. So here's how we went about it. Once I post...

Bluetooth Hollow: House Update 8/14/15
http://www.bluetoothhollow.com/2015/08/house-update-81415.html
Friday, August 14, 2015. After all of the ripping, tearing and demolishing, we are finally beginning to add a little bit of "new" to the bare bones house. The biggest accomplishment this week was installing the French doors. Naturally, it wasn't exactly a matter of popping the sliding doors out and screwing in the new doors. Even though we special ordered them from a modular home store, they still didn't fit the space. So it took some cutting to get them to go in. They look great, though! Namely how much...

Bluetooth Hollow: Wednesday's Wildflower: Wild Bergamot
http://www.bluetoothhollow.com/2015/07/wednesdays-wildflower-wild-bergamot.html
Wednesday, July 1, 2015. Wednesday's Wildflower: Wild Bergamot. There are many mints that grow wild or feral throughout North America, and this one can be found in practically every state! Wild Bergamot, or Monarda fistulosa. Isn't too particular about its habitat. It likes to grow in dry clearings, roadsides and forest borders throughout its range, which includes nearly all 50 states and southern Canada. It isn't fussy about soil type, as long its feet stay reasonably moist and well drained. Speaking of...

Wednesday, August 12, 2015. Wednesday's Wildflower: Mountain Mint. I've been looking forward to writing about this plant all Summer! This native mint never seems to get the attention it deserves, but today I'm going to try and give it justice. Mountain Mint can be found in some form growing east of the Rockies, from Canada to Florida, and at least 20 species occur in North America. Most of them grow quite tall, up to 6 feet, and have a stiff, woody stem. The Mountain Mint genus is Pycnanthemum,. There ar...

Wednesday, August 5, 2015. Wednesday's Wildflower: Thinleaf Coneflower. All across America can be found bright yellow or orange flowers with dark centers. Bluetooth Hollow: Wednesday's Wildflower: Jewelweed
http://www.bluetoothhollow.com/2015/06/wednesdays-wildflower-jewelweed.html
Friday, June 5, 2015. In the cool, moist hollows and along the stream banks of Eastern North America there grows a plant that just begs to be touched. And with good reason! Jewelweed, ironically also named Touch-Me-Not, is a living salve for virtually every affliction that plagues the skin. There can be found two varieties of Impatiens. Also known as Spotted Touch-Me-Not, and Impatiens pallida,. In our neck of the woods, the Pale variety is the most common, but they are said to be equally beneficial.
