Pioneer Birding: 1/1/15 - 2/1/15
http://pioneerbirding.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Notes about birds, birding and travel from the Pioneer Valley in Western Massachusetts. Sunday, January 25, 2015. MA - Redpolls and other local delights. The last few days have been relatively mild for January with a small weather event on the 24th bringing some fresh snow but not too much accumulation. Locally, I stumbled across a few decent birds whilst jogging or doing other incidental activities. Jan 23rd saw two Common Redpolls. Joining the American Goldfinches and Pine Siskins. Arrived nice and ear...
Pioneer Birding: 2/1/15 - 3/1/15
http://pioneerbirding.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Notes about birds, birding and travel from the Pioneer Valley in Western Massachusetts. Monday, February 23, 2015. MA - patch is frozen. Careening above the power canal when so few other gulls were present. I also reminded myself that this week back in 2009 produced a Slaty-backed Gull. My one and only record in Franklin County. That bird was often among 700 or so large gulls at Barton Cove, the sort of numbers that seemed very distant today. Looking toward Turner's Falls bridge from Unity Park. Loose, s...
Pioneer Birding: MA - good birds in Gill
http://pioneerbirding.blogspot.com/2015/05/ma-good-birds-in-gill.html
Notes about birds, birding and travel from the Pioneer Valley in Western Massachusetts. Friday, May 29, 2015. MA - good birds in Gill. The last few days have continued to be warm and muggy but the woods, fields and wetlands around Gill have just been a 'wall of sound' lately. In particular, Wood Thrush, Pine Warbler, Louisiana Waterthrush, Ovenbird, Yellow-throated Vireo, Willow Flycatcher and Indigo Bunting seem to be especially abundant in our area this year. Double-crested Cormorants - so. MA - local ...
Pioneer Birding: MA - ibis, orioles and Fish Crows aplenty
http://pioneerbirding.blogspot.com/2015/06/ma-ibis-orioles-and-fish-crows-aplenty.html
Notes about birds, birding and travel from the Pioneer Valley in Western Massachusetts. Monday, June 15, 2015. MA - ibis, orioles and Fish Crows aplenty. Apologies for the lack of posts lately. I've been busy with fieldwork in the Pioneer Valley so had little time for blogging. That much said there's been plenty going on in Gill and surroundings and the normally 'quiet' mid-June period has yielded a number of incidental surprises, not least of which was a dark ( Plegadis. Vocalizing birds, Stop n' Shop, ...
Pioneer Birding: MA - Great Egrets aplenty
http://pioneerbirding.blogspot.com/2015/07/ma-great-egrets-in-valley.html
Notes about birds, birding and travel from the Pioneer Valley in Western Massachusetts. Thursday, July 30, 2015. MA - Great Egrets aplenty. This morning I made a casual check of Barton Cove from the Turner's Falls side of the Connecticut River. Water levels (controlled) were nice and low and it seemed more than reasonable to hope for a few shorebirds. Alas no shorebirds could be found but that was more than compensated for by an actual flock of Great Egrets. James P. Smith. View my complete profile.

Shorebirder: Misc birding, flight home (June 27-28)
http://www.shorebirder.com/2015/07/misc-birding-flight-home-june-27-28.html
Monday, July 6, 2015. Misc birding, flight home (June 27-28). My last two days in Washington revolved around Ryan and Evie's wedding festivities. On the morning of the 27th I leisurely made my way from Wenatchee to Poulsbo for the wedding that afternoon. My only stop to bird came in Tacoma to quickly check for that Slaty-backed Gull. Again, nothing. We all had a blast at the wedding last night. Not much sleep was had, which is a sign of a great time. Your typical moist lowland forest around Puget Sound.
Shorebirder: August 2015

Monday, August 31, 2015. Aug 22-23 - BBC Pelagic Insanity. I guess we should be used to this by now. The BBC August overnight pelagic trip never really fails to produce. With a couple of epic trips in recent years, expectations were high for last weekend's excursion. Somehow we managed to exceed those expectations on many levels. I will leave the full-blown summary to trip leader Jeremiah Trimble, but here are some numbers for you in the meantime:. 2 Black-capped Petrel (white-faced type). Peter and Jere...
Shorebirder: Olympic Peninsula & Vancouver Island (June 23-24)
http://www.shorebirder.com/2015/07/olympic-peninsula-vancouver-island-june.html
Saturday, July 4, 2015. Olympic Peninsula and Vancouver Island (June 23-24). My plan for today was to bird around Ocean Shores (on the opposite side of Grays Harbor from Westport) for the morning, then leisurely make my way along the outer coast to Port Angeles for a 9pm ferry to Victoria Island, BC. Mule Deer 'likes' include long walks on the beach. About as good as I could do for a record shot of this morning's Ancient Murrelet. Heading north from Ocean Shores I gave myself a short tour around Quinault...
Kevin Bourinot: February 2012
http://kevinbourinot.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html
Saturday, February 18, 2012. Townsend's Warbler - Ipswich. And here is the normal range of the Townsend's Warbler. How did this bird end up in Mass? Will it return to its normal range? Sunday, February 5, 2012. I saw this while driving and I needed to take a photo because it boggled my mind. Not quite sure what happened here. My first guess was that it fell from above, but looking at it more it almosts seems like it got its right leg wedged between two twigs. What do you think? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
The Feather and the Flower: May 2010
http://featherflower.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html
The Feather and the Flower. I arise every morning torn between the desire to save the world and the desire to savor the world. It makes it hard to plan the day." - E. B. White. Sunday, May 9, 2010. Biggest Week in American Birding [Alternatives]. It's almost here, the biggest week in American birding! Yes, this afternoon I'll be heading east on I-86 to . . . what's that? Right, I'm not that geographically challenged. Anyway, I'll be heading east . . . what? I won't be blogging, possibly I'll throw a twee...

Wednesday, January 26, 2011. Lark Sparrow in Devens. again? Today (01/26) while checking feeders around Devens, I spotted a definite Lark Sparrow feeding on the ground with juncos! This is about 1.4 miles away from the original sighting (this is a Worcester County Bird). Could it be the same bird? Luckily, I had my camera this time:. I first took some quick photos just in case it decided to take off. I walked closer for some great looks. Common Redpoll in Devens (1/25). Lately, I've been searching for a ...
See you at sunrise...: May 2014
http://arcticory.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html
See you at sunrise. First things first, at the end of the last post, I said I’d keep you posted once I identified this flower:. Turns out, it’s a Rock Jasmine. It seems to be pretty common; at least it’s distinct enough when I do see it. Anyway, I wasn’t guiding for most of today so I ventured out solo. First up, a female LONG-TAILED DUCK stretched her wings out on Weather Bureau Lake:. A check of the Polovina Wetlands yielded the ubiquitous RED-NECKED PHALAROPES:. Likewise, Lake Hill is aptly named:.

See you at sunrise. Don't touch the bumblebee's house! Finally, I have other things to blame for not getting a timely blog post written! Usually it’s just my indolence but this time I get to point to our internet problems (half the town lost their internet for a while) and the fact that I’ve actually been working. Yes, when one of these anchors offshore, better brace yourself:. Sometimes they speak English, sometimes they don’t. Oh yeah, puffins, here’s one:. Yes, I managed to snag another new ABA bird j...
See you at sunrise...: April 2014
http://arcticory.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
See you at sunrise. Well, Ashley and I finally ventured over to downtown San Francisco where birders had been able to scope the bird. We walked out on the Aquatic Park Pier, set up the scope, and. well. it wasn't hard (look for the only white bird):. Here's a map showing where the bird hangs out and where we viewed it from:. View Northern Gannet viewing. In a larger map. It was cool to see Alcatraz. The out-of-service prison was more than a mile away from where we were:. And this Hermit Warbler:. It was ...
