Biodynamic vegetable gardening from Branch Hill – Allan Jenkins and Howard Sooley. Having your cake and not eating it. Monthly Archives for February 2013. The Danish chainsaw massacre. The nice neighbour has become another power-mad man with a power tool, slaughtering the hedge like a demented ork in the Hobbit. At first paralysed, I run through the snow to plead some sensitivity. Surprised, he stops. The hedge will of course grow back just maybe not this year. Our snowy walks by the sea are tranquil, th...

Biodynamic vegetable gardening from Branch Hill – Allan Jenkins and Howard Sooley. Having your cake and not eating it. Monthly Archives for March 2013. Looking around the plot, it’s evident winter hasn’t left us with much. It’s a difficult time of year, with winter dragging its feet into the spring our hopes are keen to conjure. Advice of ‘patience’ at this time of year seems prudent. March 20, 2013. Last week I started off the sweet peas in a propagator at home, luckily didn’t sow them in the grou...

the red shed: Ice
http://redsheddublin.blogspot.com/2015/01/ice.html
Growing food in north dublin. Thursday, January 1, 2015. I did get some work done; the three smallest beds weeded and cleared, old rhubarb leaves and asparagus fronds chucked on the compost mountain and the blueberry bushes pruned of crossing and leggy branches. More to do but there is no real rush - a good few weeks of winter lie ahead before the manic spring rush begins again. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. the red shed: January 2014

Growing food in north dublin. Friday, January 31, 2014. I have a cold, and I. M blaming it on the weather. Not because of the weather itself, but because it has conspired to keep me from the allotment. I did a quick U-turn and headed out to the plot, along the recently-flooded sea road over bumps of seaweed and debris. The tides are very high at the moment and Dublin has tidal flood warnings in place all week. Still, its not all doom and gloom. It. S bright now until. A flying visit after work, if I leav...
the red shed: April 2014
http://redsheddublin.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Growing food in north dublin. Friday, April 18, 2014. Great Friday would be more accurate - a peach of a day, with clear blue skies, a gentle breeze and warm sunshine. My sister and I had brunch in the back yard for the first time - I gave it a spring clean earlier in the week so it's now a civilised place to sit once more. Pots in the back yard. Tulips and daffodils from the allotment. Out then to Donabate, where everyone was out and about, working on their plots, digging and raking and sowing like mad.

http://redsheddublin.blogspot.com/2015/03/blink.html
Growing food in north dublin. Wednesday, March 11, 2015. Every time I visit, something has moved on - back in late January it was the first snowdrop emerging from the thicket, last weekend it was tulips my parents brought home from Amsterdam last autumn finally showing their faces above ground. In the midst of all this new growth - some death to balance it out. Next week is St Patrick's Day - time to truly announce the start of the new season with the ceremonial planting of my early spuds. Brassicas, Sun...

Growing food in north dublin. Friday, July 25, 2014. July please, I'm on my knees, the smell of your fresh cut grass. A month has floated by since my last post, in a haze of sun and hoovering and coding and heat and claustrophobic offices and movies and torrential downpours and illustrator icons and forked lightning on the motorway and broken fridge-freezers. July has been a brilliant, dramatic, tiring, life-changing month. The other evening, I escaped work and brought a pan, some rashers and bread out t...

Through Lemongrass Eyes: Act your age!
http://throughlemongrasseyes.blogspot.com/2011/09/act-your-age.html
Gardening, living green, small details that captivate me, and loving Melbourne. Wednesday, September 28, 2011. Occasionally I feel like I live an overly sedate life for someone in their mid-twenties. For instance, last weekend there was the choice of bee keeping workshop or the offer of some tickets to Parklife. Lykke Li in particular was one to get excited about, but others I liked included Kimbra, Gossip, Santigold, and Example. Photo by Karen Roe. September 29, 2011 at 4:27 PM. View my complete profile.

Through Lemongrass Eyes: November 2011
http://throughlemongrasseyes.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html
Gardening, living green, small details that captivate me, and loving Melbourne. Sunday, November 27, 2011. Adventures in urban agriculture. How incredible are these public herb and fruit gardens? They're right on a busy riverfront path in the centre of Brisbane. Full of lemongrass, basil, chillies, thyme, papayas, and (a real novelty for a southerner) pineapples. As an aside, the state library here is incredible! Highly recommend a visit.). Links to this post. Labels: out and about. A wee while ago I was...

Plot 26 | My thoughts on gardening and the domestic arts.
My thoughts on gardening and the domestic arts. Posted by plot26 in Uncategorized. Despite this past winter being the coldest and meanest I’ve ever experienced in Oxford, we managed to get the plot ready for spring planting at the same time of year that we always do. Last weekend we finished pulling weeds (will we ever learn to mulch? Then we added our compost, some garden lime, and some organic fertilizer to our soil and finished it off by tilling the plot thoroughly. Turned Over the Garden. Voles (I th...

The Girl on Plot 28 | the one who talks to worms…
The Girl on Plot 28. The one who talks to worms…. My Black Rock hen, Rusty. Do you think she wants to join me down on the allotment? Or is she more interested in the handful of dandelion greens and hedge garlic that I’m holding…? I’m quite sure she would be happy with both! Ps… see the shed walls acting as carport walls? That’s my shed that is. Waiting to be put into good use down the allotment again! Bed One is Dug! Seed potatoes are between the rocks in two rows. I’m going to be fit in no time ;).
Plot 28E
Saturday, 8 June 2013. Back on the range. Saturday, 7 April 2012. Waiting for the sun. So more snow and with it the notion of getting a head start gone out of the window. Never mind at least the spuds are still ok and hopefully that is the last of the really cold weather. Will have to check the seed bed tomorrow and assess the damage! Thursday, 15 March 2012. Seeds in and hoping to put some early plug plants in too. Wednesday, 15 February 2012. Two strawberries from last summer. Thursday, 9 February 2012.

Beware of the Flowers! Coz I'm sure they're going to get you……….YEAH! The results are in! That competition I entered – The annual event organised by the Leeds and District Allotment Gardener’s Federation to find the best allotments in the city……. A letter came through the post today with the results………. How do you think I did? I’ve worked my little socks off to reach this point…. 😉. Crop Quality (40% maximum). Maybe I need to concentrate on ways of bringing more pollinators on to Plot 29 next year….
