Wildlife on our allotment. A record of visitors to Marsh Lane Allotments in Hungerford - some good; some not so welcome! Saturday, 1 August 2015. Sitting on a flower. Actually there were lots of these blowflies enjoying the alliums on site today, but I only had my mobile with me so just the one photo. He's joined by a little pollen beetle - masses of them about as usual at this time of year. 05 August, 2015. Such a pretty colour. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Follow my blog with Bloglovin. Wildlife on our allotment. A record of visitors to Marsh Lane Allotments in Hungerford - some good; some not so welcome! Tuesday, 28 July 2015. Yep, it was giant and obviously a horsefly so not too difficult to identify. And, if my identification. Is correct - tabanus. This is the largest fly in the UK, possibly in Europe. Look at those mouthparts! No wonder their bite is so painful! The eyes are cool though. After I took this photo she flew off and bumped me on the head as she went! 28 July, 2015. In 20...

Wildlife on our allotment. A record of visitors to Marsh Lane Allotments in Hungerford - some good; some not so welcome! Tuesday, 14 July 2015. Soldier Fly - Stratiomyidae. This extremely pretty metallic fly is a Soldier Fly. There have been a few around the allotment this year - glistening like a jewel in the sunlight. From what I've seen online. It would appear that this is a female. The males have a bronse abdomen rather than this pretty blue one. 20 July, 2015. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
Wildlife on our allotment: Large Skipper Butterfly

Wildlife on our allotment. A record of visitors to Marsh Lane Allotments in Hungerford - some good; some not so welcome! Monday, 29 June 2015. I think that's the correct id. I was so pleased with this little chap for sitting patiently on my finger while I took a few photos of him from various angles! It did refuse to open its wings completely, but this shot seems to show enough of a pattern to make me think it's a large skipper butterfly - see UK Butterflies. 01 July, 2015. Today I was in the meadow-part of the allotment site, by the car park like last year. Interesting to compare with last year's count on the same date. Loads more butterflies this year and quite different varieties too. Here are my figures:. 5 x Small Whites. 2 x Large Whites. 4 x Meadow Brown. 1 x Green Veined white.

Wildlife on our allotment. A record of visitors to Marsh Lane Allotments in Hungerford - some good; some not so welcome! Sunday, 2 August 2015. Big Butterfly Count 2015. Today I managed to get my Big Butterfly Count. Done at the allotment site entrance where we have a meadow which gets cut down once a year. There's a section where we piled a load of cuttings a couple of years ago and the thistles are doing particularly well there! So that's where I did my count. I did counts on the site in 2012. I know i...
