The Power of Questions and Feelings of Discomfort. 8220;Discomfort brings engagement and change. Discomfort means you're doing something that others were unlikely to do, because they're hiding out in the comfortable zone. ”. Linchpin: Are You Indispensable? I am an Instructional Coach for Albemarle County Public Schools. Such a succinct answer, but such a true answer. I have never thought of myself as an expert in questioning, but it is something that I now do every day when I am working with teachers.

Navigating Readers and Reading. Http:/ luciediamonds.deviantart.com/art/Lost-In-A-Good-Book-174529828. I just finished Navigating Early. By Clare Vanderpool. I read it not only because I pledged to read 40 books this year or because there is a bunch of hype out about this book, but because I have a son in 5th grade for whom I am constantly trying to find enticing books. Books that he can just get lost in. Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. And Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales. I got pretty creative with my le...

Who inspires your creativity? About the same time as I was listening to teachers grapple with which "C" they want to hone in on for the next couple of weeks, I came across a twitter post sharing "10 Ways to Build Critical Thinking.". Number Three on the list is to "Build Creativity." The following outlines the strategies teachers should take in order to build creativity:. Teachers might be surprised at the quality of work that students can produce when they control their own learning.". My son's class wa...

It's the Elliot Way: Beach Time

http://itstheelliotway.blogspot.com/2015/08/beach-time.html

Tuesday, August 4, 2015. I don't often bring my camera to the beach - the whole sand creeping into the innards of my camera thing worries me - but I did bring it down with me on the day Georgia and Gordy ran their 5k and while we were waiting for them to run by, I took some fun beach shots of Josie and Henry. It was a gorgeous day. The tide was up and there wasn't a whole lot of available beach for us to occupy, so Henry dug out a trench to hold back the waves from soaking our beach towels. Et Tu, Bessie?

Thursday, June 25, 2015. The Last Day of School. It is finally (FINALLY! The last day of school. I thought this day would never come. I took my usual End of The Year Photos. So without further ado, I present to you - Georgia, on the first day of school:. And Georgia on the last day (of sixth grade):. And Josephine on the first day of fourth grade:. And on the last day of fourth grade:. And finally, Henry. Here is he on the first day of ninth grade:. And on his last day (which was almost a month ago):.

It's the Elliot Way: July 2015

http://itstheelliotway.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html

Thursday, July 23, 2015. This is Georgia. I'm going to tell you about my first over-night camp experience. The first night was really hard. We were in tents, sleeping on the hard ground and none of us could fall asleep. Even worse, they had made tent groups and had purposely split up my friend and me. There were twelve kids in our group. Most of the boys were a year younger than me but the girls were around my age. We had three counselors: a boy and two girls and they were nice. I don't think I'd do THIS...

It's the Elliot Way: December 2014

http://itstheelliotway.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Tuesday, December 30, 2014. My Christmas post is going to be a long one, so I've divided it up into two parts. We had Christmas at our house which was probably a good thing considering the arrival of the puppy. As is our usual, we got dressed up for Christmas Eve. I wore one of Janice's gorgeous velvet, Batik skirts. I asked Gordy to take a photo of me to show Janice, but this blurry shot is the best that he took. And I felt very warm and glamorous all evening. Owen said a merry "Happy Birthday! After ea...

It's the Elliot Way: November 2014

http://itstheelliotway.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Sunday, November 30, 2014. Georgia turned 12 last week, almost right after her surgery. (I'll get back to Thanksgiving soon, but I do like my blog to be in order! The day started early as all Elliot birthdays do. Georgia's special day was also a school day for two of the three Elliots (Henry had the week off), so we all had to get up extra early to have time to open presents. Georgia was not disappointed. She got a pair of light-blue high-tops from her Granny and Grandfather:. Happy Birthday, Georgia!

It's the Elliot Way: August 2015

http://itstheelliotway.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html

Sunday, August 30, 2015. The weekend was supposed to be lousy - the forecast for the island was rain, rain, and more rain. Plus wind, thunder and a lightening storm or two. I figured it would be a long weekend of entertaining bored children, but Block Island threw us a bone and the weather was glorious the entire three days. The boys did their own thing, but the girls and I took advantage of the sun and went to the beach each day. We also visited the Labyrinth - our first visit there this season. Elizabe...

It's the Elliot Way: March 2015

http://itstheelliotway.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Monday, March 30, 2015. The girls and I had a really, really mellow weekend. And we needed it. Gordy and Henry spent the weekend in New Hampshire where Henry and his hockey team were playing (and winning! The Northeast Region Championship. That victory will be the subject of my next post (I forgot to get the photos from Gordy), I promise. Henry and Gordy left Friday afternoon for the tournament, so we had a three-day girls weekend. And throughout the entire day) and no one really enjoyed themselves.

It's the Elliot Way: Georgia Runs a 5K

http://itstheelliotway.blogspot.com/2015/08/georgia-runs-5k.html

Sunday, August 2, 2015. Georgia Runs a 5K. And she swears she will never do it again. It was the same 5K beach run that Josie did with Gordy last year. The race starts at Town Beach (Crescent Beach) and runs all the way up to Mansion Beach and back. Henry, Josie and I waited at Mansion Beach, so all these photos were taken at the half-way mark. As of 9:15 this morning, Georgia was back to wanting to run the race. She regretted the decision about five minutes into the run. Labels: Block Island 5K. JP Knit...

It's the Elliot Way: August 2014

http://itstheelliotway.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Sunday, August 31, 2014. Snorkeling Off Block Island. While Josie and Gordy were getting ready to begin their 5K, Henry and Georgia were 2.5K away, preparing to go snorkeling in the ocean. It was a cold, over-cast day and not the kind of weather that makes you want to sunbathe or build sand castles. It also wasn't the kind of weather that made you want to get into the ocean at all, but we had time to kill while waiting for Gordy and Josie to run by, and my children aren't good at just sitting around.

Ponderings of a Puritan

Monday, June 17, 2013. Is it possible that angels can reproduce? It was a question asked during a spirited debate regarding a good understanding of Gen. 6:1-4. It is an interesting question that was spawned out of when angels were created, how much do we really know, and can we know with any certainty. I would like to look at this briefly in hopes of addressing the opening question. First, when were angels created? In all honesty, Scripture is unclear as to when they were created. John 1:1-3 states, &#82...

Pondering purpose - Home

Life can be so much more fulfilling if you align your career with an underlying life purpose. So many of us simply go through the motions in our jobs and think that some day we'll figure out what we really want to do. Our jobs are "good enough". But I hear the clock ticking and feel compelled to define my life mission and find true purpose in a career. Think of the last time you were in a situation where things didn’t go as you had planned. Did you improvise to achieve what you wanted anyways? Thankfully...

Pondering Quilting

An attempt to corral myself. View my complete profile. May 18, 2015. This is Diane's hexagon quilt. She had pieced all the hexagon's together, then appliqued them onto the border. This is the bottom row. She wanted a very lose design on the hexagons and a feather border. I did the feathers freehand. This is an overall design, I used Autopilot for the center. Diane used an aged muslin for the back. Well, Diane was very happy with her finished quilt! May 16, 2015. Close up of the feather design and leaves.

ISAIAH 52:12 says: "For you shall not go out in haste, and you shall not go in flight, for the Lord will go before you, and the Lord of Israel will be your rear guard.". The phrase that I focused on was the last one: "the Lord of Israel will be your rear guard.". This caught the attention of my dear friend Amy Carmichael as well. Here are her thoughts:.
