Happy Consumptive: Book: Original Tastes
http://happyconsumptive.blogspot.com/2005/12/book-original-tastes.html
Eating, drinking, getting. Sunday, December 11, 2005. I've begun discussing an idea with my wife about original tastes in food. It first occurred to me when I took photos of Arizmendi Sourdough Beer Rye. Now, this is plainly not a new idea. But unlike cultural fields where it would be passe to even address the ubiquity and ubiquitous consumption of a knock-off - fashion comes to mind- I haven't seen it addressed with food. Still, with fashion detail-for-detail replication is the point of commoditization&...

Happy Consumptive: Fruit: Mandarin: Satsuma
http://happyconsumptive.blogspot.com/2006/01/fruit-mandarin-satsuma.html
Eating, drinking, getting. Saturday, January 21, 2006. I've been meaning to post on satsuma's. For a while now. The "first tangerine of the season" arrived at the Grand Lake Farmers' Market. Of the Slow Food. Samples of these fruits. Despite what you might think, I'm skeptical of the Slow Foods movement for reasons that are at once political and deeply engrained psychologically. This sort of deliberation is one of the things I've been trying to keep to a minimum here, and not seeing any way around it has...

Eating, drinking, getting. Monday, December 12, 2005. Food Writing: Criticism: To the Moon, Alice? About a month ago Daniel Patterson published an article in the Sunday New York Times. If you have a NYT account, you can still read the article "To the Moon, Alice? You may be asking yourself if you are about to read a spirited rebuttal of some month old piece of food writing. Alternatively, you may be asking if there will be any photos in this post. Let's take a look at some of those observations. Very few...

Happy Consumptive: Wine: Vinography: Trying To Pin Down an Apellation's Flavors
http://happyconsumptive.blogspot.com/2005/12/wine-vinography-trying-to-pin-down.html
Eating, drinking, getting. Wednesday, December 28, 2005. Wine: Vinography: Trying To Pin Down an Apellation's Flavors. Today describes a 40 bottle tasting of Dry Creek Valley. Zinfandels. The express purpose of the tasting was to establish what Dry Creek on the whole tastes like. This got my attention because the Dry Creek Valley is just about the only American wine growing region that I have had a sense of tasting a particular way. Namely, like cherries. And the 2002 Somers Ranch Zinfandel. Still regard...

Eating, drinking, getting. Monday, December 20, 2010. Not These; Not These Either. A couple of weeks before the holidays, the baked goods and other sweets start to amass in our house. Eating, drinking, getting. Sunday, November 07, 2010. India Tree's Dark Muscovado Sugar. The India Tree Gourmet. Line of dark sugars is yours for the grabbing at Berkeley Bowl. My favorite is the Dark Muscovado. Jam packed with molasses. It's also a real ding in any perceived aura of locavorism - hauled in from Mauritius. The Bowl has carried this stuff for years, but I don't get over there much these days. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. Response to "To the Moon, Alice?

http://happyconsumptive.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html
Eating, drinking, getting. Wednesday, September 15, 2010. Wine's Bargain Bin Still Getting Deeper. I've been assembling a case of wine from our son's birth year. The idea is that when he's 21 we'll split it. He has to drink 6 bottles with us, and can do with the other six whatever it is a twenty-one year old does. No one particular wine, no one particular region. Or even Jordan Cabernet. Often enough to appreciate year over year change. About We maxed out our case before I could even get to Italy or Spain.

Happy Consumptive: Hog Island Revisited
http://happyconsumptive.blogspot.com/2012/08/hog-island-revisited.html
Eating, drinking, getting. Monday, August 27, 2012. Had the odd experience of stumbling across my own blog in a Google search result the other night. From five years ago. I was curious about the actual paddling distance from Marshall to Hog Island. Things were different back in July 2007. We had one son, he was too young for the trip. I ate oysters. I prefer the goat burger, with the lamb burger fixings. Points for the Thomas Dolby reference. 10:13 PM, August 29, 2012. 10:19 PM, August 29, 2012. View my ...
