Pushing the Rose Envelope

Pushing the Rose Envelope. Thursday, April 23, 2015. Roses of Yesterday and Today was this rose's champion for several decades. All through the 1950s and 1960s, they touted how glorious the color of the flowers was, then apologized they, once again, were unable to provide plants as they simply refused to grow. Pushing the Rose Envelope: 12/19/14

http://pushingtheroseenvelope.blogspot.com/2014_12_19_archive.html

Pushing the Rose Envelope. Friday, December 19, 2014. I have been asked whether it's possible to insert a bud where the stock naturally grew one. Yes, it's possible, and it can work, but here is the potential issue. I deliberately inserted this bud of the proposed "Real Bloomfield Abundance". Over where I (hopefully! All six of the Bloomfield Abundance buds are green and swelling, almost two months after being inserted into the stock. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Dr E M. Mills.

Pushing the Rose Envelope: 11/11/14

http://pushingtheroseenvelope.blogspot.com/2014_11_11_archive.html

Pushing the Rose Envelope. Tuesday, November 11, 2014. Announcing the 2014 pollination results. I knew I had to control myself, or there would be FAR too many seeds to make room for, so I stopped pollinating about the first of August. I figured that way, I could make sure all the hips would ripen prior to the squirrels and rats feasting on them and it would (hopefully) limit the quantity of seeds. It almost worked. M37-1 and O117-5 are two of Jim's unreleased Hulthemia seedlings. Carlin's Rhythm X Ch...

Pushing the Rose Envelope. Sunday, March 29, 2015. In an earlier post, I showed how to collect pollen and use it to fertilize blooms to produce seeds of your own crosses. After approximately 110 or so days after pollination, they should be sufficiently ripe for either storing until the weather is appropriate for planting, or sowing directly into soil if the temperatures are right. The tables are set on saw horses with 4' lengths of 2" X 4" placed between them. The boxes are then placed on the 2" X 4"...

Pushing the Rose Envelope: Chip Budding

http://pushingtheroseenvelope.blogspot.com/2014/11/chip-budding.html

Pushing the Rose Envelope. Friday, November 28, 2014. Chip budding is basically slicing upward through the bark to reveal the cambium, then sliding the bud up into the slice. As with T budding, the bud should be the same size or narrower, from a thinner gauge bud stick than the stock. You can easily bud something from a quarter inch thick bud stick to an inch thick stock, but not vice versa. If the brighter green rings around the perimeter of the shield make decent contact with the cambium of the stock, ...

Bricky's World: June 2012

http://brickysworld.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html

Thoughts and reflections from southern New Zealand. Tuesday, 19 June 2012. Signs in the Timaru Botanic Gardens, South Canterbury, New Zealand. OK, the signwriter stuffed up - twice - but wouldn't someone on the gardens staff have noticed and sent them back for correction? Apparently not, as I first spotted these errant signs three years ago and they're still in place. Links to this post. Saturday, 16 June 2012. Where does respect begin? Links to this post. Bricky's World: May 2012

http://brickysworld.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html

Thoughts and reflections from southern New Zealand. Wednesday, 2 May 2012. Nature the Best Architect. Nature is the best architect and I don't rate at all. I planted this climbing rose ('Lady Barbara') and the Virginia Creeper in early Spring with the purpose in mind to hide an ugly fence. No thought given to the colour combination, but with the onset of Autumn, nature has provided a nice blend. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Subscribe To Bricky's World. In cazul in care plantam mai multi agrisi, optim, intre plante distanta...

Links to this post. Miercuri, 27 aprilie 2011.

Thoughts and reflections from southern New Zealand. Sunday, 13 October 2013. Between two trees, there lies a story true. Is a song that was popular more years ago than I really want to remember, but I was reminded of it today when I visited the very small town which was the home of my childhood. Two trees, still reaching skyward after all these years. The first is an English Oak (. Soon after I started school as a 5 year old, my teacher took our class for a natur. A sensible one, probably! Thoughts and reflections from southern New Zealand. Thursday, 29 March 2012. In Te Anau. Wednesday, 28 March 2012. People and their Gardens. My work often involves visiting people at their homes. Mostly, when I walk through the front gate and up the path, I have very little factual information about the person or people behind the door. But I can usually make a pretty intelligent guess about their personalities. How? Unkempt, overgrown gardens can sometimes indicate unfortunate occupants who are not wel...

Two kids, one stroller, and a mighty big hill. December 30, 2011. December 30, 2011. 8220;Does he have light skin or dark skin? This query has become Owen’s common rejoinder when he is introduced to a new name: someone Daddy knows, a football player, a name in the news.
