Rachel's Victory through Christ

Rachel recently found a small lump in her breast that was found to be cancerous. After shedding some tears, her family surrounded her with prayer. Rachel's hope is in Christ, the lover of her soul, her Savior, Friend, and Deliverer. Our family set up this blog so others could read updates and know how to pray and support, even from afar. Rachel is so appreciative of all the prayers and can feel the "peace of the Lord that passes all understanding."

Rachel's Victory through Christ: Wig Shopping, Take-2; & Thankful Hearts

http://rachelsmiley.blogspot.com/2012/01/wig-shopping-take-2-thankful-hearts.html

Rachel's Victory through Christ. Thursday, January 26, 2012. Wig Shopping, Take-2; and Thankful Hearts. So we went wig shopping twice this week, and this second time was the charm. Our first night, we entered a big store with rows of shoulder-up, hair-styled mannequins, and it was a little creepy. Wizard of Oz and the woman who kept switching heads wouldn't leave my mind. The sales lady was really friendly, but told us if we weren't buying tonight, we could only try on three wigs. This time, the atmosphe...

Rachel's Victory through Christ: January 2013

http://rachelsmiley.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html

Rachel's Victory through Christ. Monday, January 21, 2013. Today we went in to have Mom's port removed. That's the quarter-sized device surgically inserted into a vein by Mom's upper chest. It stayed under her skin for an entire year, and was how the nurses accessed Mom's circulatory system to give her chemo treatments, (by sticking a needle in through the skin, into the port). It was a significant event, signaling a finish of all the chemo treatments. We thank and praise God, our Healer. I remembered si...

Rachel's Victory through Christ: Psalm 23 - Song by Jason Upton

http://rachelsmiley.blogspot.com/2012/02/psalm-23-song-by-jason-upton.html

Rachel's Victory through Christ. Thursday, February 2, 2012. Psalm 23 - Song by Jason Upton. Back in January, when test results were still unknown, Mom woke very early in. The morning with words from the 23rd Psalm. Passing through her mind. Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear. No evil; for Thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff comfort me.". Surprised at this particular verse, yet Mom was amazed at God's personal communication. Enjoy this beautiful song. Back in Jan...

Rachel's Victory through Christ: Radiation & Last Chemo Treatment

http://rachelsmiley.blogspot.com/2012/12/update.html

Rachel's Victory through Christ. Friday, December 28, 2012. Radiation and Last Chemo Treatment. Radiation is over (mid-Sept). The Lord was a shield and shade to Mom. The technicians commented on how little reddness and irritation her skin showed. Thank you, Lord. Her heart regained pumpability strength. She was able to finish chemo. Chemo is over (Dec 13th). Mom will get her port removed (how they accessed the chemo/iv). She will take a pill for five years. She still has neurapothay (numbness in ...Thank...

Rachel's Victory through Christ: Lumpectomy Results: Clear

http://rachelsmiley.blogspot.com/2012/07/lumpectomy-results-clear.html

Rachel's Victory through Christ. Monday, July 9, 2012. Huge praise from biopsy of sentinel lymph node = clear, no cancer. Praise God in the highest! Another praise: the area around where the lump used to be is also clear of cancer. The titanium marker was removed during this 'lumpectomy' (even though they found no lump to remove), but they still go in to take away the 'margins' and see if the tissue is clear or not. It is! A Hebrew word that means praise to God, the covenant-keeping One! Back in January,...

The Smileys: 08.12

http://smileyfam.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html

8220;Mommy the Cake is Falling”. Eliza and I made a layer cake to celebrate Meredith’s 30th birthday in June. It was a hot day (like every day this summer) and we left the iced cake in the kitchen while we ate our meal. Eliza was up and about when she called out from the kitchen, “ Mommy, the cake is falling! Purdue Alumni Game and Team Scrimmage. Along with awesome photos, at my Purdue blog. I was able to sneak down courtside for the entire game and get some nice shots. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). We me...

The Smileys: 04.12

http://smileyfam.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html

I had set the deadline to have it mostly finished (walls, ceiling, paint, floor, trim, etc.) by the time Matilda was born, so that we could immediately enjoy the extra space. In late July 2011, on the morning of the day we went to the hospital to have Lynne induced, I painted the last of the baseboards. Nothing like a deadline! I learned so much during the process and owe a lot of thanks to my dad for his help a few weekends to do some of the two-man tasks, like studs and ceiling drywall, and answering m...

The Smileys: Mother’s Day in NYC

http://smileyfam.blogspot.com/2011/06/mothers-day-in-nyc.html

Mother’s Day in NYC. For Mother’s Day this year, Kirk surprised me with a trip to New York for three days. He was going to be out there for work and I was lucky enough to tag along. I spent the days by myself (a mother’s dream! And at night we had three date nights in a row! Kirk and I had some fantastic food in the evenings, including the original Shake Shack. Indian), Kin Shop. Thai, which Kirk raved about. When it opened last Fall), and Le Parisien. The show was sold out, but thanks to a generous loca...

The Smileys: Paris – Day 9

http://smileyfam.blogspot.com/2010/11/paris-day-9.html

Paris – Day 9. It makes us a little sad to write about our last full day in Paris. We woke up surprised to hear the sound of piano coming through our open window. Someone below us was playing amazingly well, and it was a wonderful way to start the day. We had saved a visit to the Louvre for our last day since it was our backup plan if it had rained a lot any other day. On our way to the Louvre we stopped by Le Duree for some breakfast pastries and macarons. Earlier we wrote about. We also enjoyed seeing ...

The Smileys: Birmingham or Bust (or Baby?)

http://smileyfam.blogspot.com/2009/03/birmingham-or-bust-or-baby.html

Birmingham or Bust (or Baby? Unfortunately, Federer bailed (because he was scared? The Davis Cup tournament is a fun experience because, as opposed to a normal tennis event with mild clapping and no real rooting interest, the crowd can get behind their countrymen, make lots of noise, and celebrate in a way uncommon to the sport. The nationalistic pride is really fun, and it was even great to see the large Swiss contingent at the arena who were great sports and had some well-coordinated cheers. Little loc...

The Smileys: New York, New York

http://smileyfam.blogspot.com/2010/05/new-york-new-york.html

New York, New York. In April, Kirk and I spent the weekend in New York. It was so fun to get out of town for a short vacation. We left Eliza at home with her grandparents, and even though it was my first time away from her overnight, it wasn’t as bad as we expected. Not bad for a photo from the plane! And see for yourself). Fantastic. After dinner we met friends at the Village Underground. On Saturday we decided to walk around and found a great little neighborhood “garage sale” (hard to call ...Kirk had ...

The Smileys: So GQ

http://smileyfam.blogspot.com/2012/02/so-gq.html

The real highlight of Super Bowl week in Indianapolis was our opportunity to attend the GQ party. Every year, GQ throws a large invite-only Super Bowl party in the host city. Did I know this two months ago? No, but thanks to an amazingly fortuitous work connection a couple weeks prior, Lynne and I found ourselves on the guest list. So what celebrities did we meet and see? When we first arrived, Hines Ward. I gave him a quick “Boiler Up” and handshake but really had nothing more to say. I&...Patron had se...

http://smileyfam.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

The Rest of the Florida Trip. Keeping up our trend of being horribly behind on blog posts, hopefully we’ll churn a bunch out this weekend. We already shared tons of pictures and stories. From Eliza’s first visit to Disney World in February, but there were other fun things that happened during our two-week trip to Florida, too! The girls made a mess of all the toys, and Emerson prepared Eliza for Disney World by showing her all the princess outfits she had. We can’t believe how big Hayden is now! Before w...

http://smileyfam.blogspot.com/2010/11/best-thai-in-new-york.html

The best Thai in New York? With my new role at work I’ll be making more frequent trips to New York to collaborate with my colleagues out there. Rough life – I know! My most recent time in the city a couple weeks ago was filled with lots of productive meetings, fun with coworkers, and, of course, fantastic food. The culinary highlight of the trip was a visit to Kin Shop. And the general public. Was seated two tables away from us! The Smileys: Tennis Weekend in Cincinnati

http://smileyfam.blogspot.com/2012/09/tennis-weekend-in-cincinnati.html

Tennis Weekend in Cincinnati. However, we had so much fun that we didn’t talk about our blog plans nearly enough. On the grandstand court we found front row seats right behind the baseline. I was quite excited. My first tennis tournament and I was going to be sitting within arms reach of the players, with an amazing view. The slate featured some great matches:. This is how great our seats were! This is how bad our center court seats were (actually, they were worse). Erik checking out the ESPN set. Golfer...

Rachel's Recipes

June 12, 2012. The best part about my produce delivery is that it forces me to eat somewhat healthier. I can’t help it though if my friend brings me a pint of Ben and Jerry’s and then leaves it in my freezer. More on that later this week. I added mango, grape tomatoes, sliced almonds, blue cheese, and a dressing from the same recipe. 1/4 cup Greek yogurt. 1/4 cup olive oil. 1 clove garlic, minced. Juice of 1/2 lemon. 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce. 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard. Salt and pepper to taste.
