Musing About Ministry: The Poor Innkeeper
http://musingaboutministry.blogspot.com/2010/12/poor-innkeeper.html
Monday, December 20, 2010. For the past few Sundays we have been looking over the shoulders of different characters in the Christmas story. What did they see, what did they feel, what did they know as Christ came into the world? We have looked at Mary, the angels of heaven, the shepherds and the wisemen. One character I have avoided has been the Innkeeper. At times I feel sorry for the Innkeeper. He seems to get worse treatment in the story than even Herod. John Phillips. Yet I have also heard it pointed...

Musing About Ministry: Thoughts on Acts 15
http://musingaboutministry.blogspot.com/2010/12/thoughts-on-acts-15.html
Thursday, December 23, 2010. Thoughts on Acts 15. Sounds like a Baptist church! Was the immediate response after we read the chapter in prayer meeting last night. Yes, it is true if you have been in church (Baptist or other) very long, conflict that grinds church life to a halt certainly can sound all too familiar. But there is a distinction here.this squabble mattered! The charge against the modern church will not be that we fight too much, but that we fight about the wrong things. Paul and Barnabas app...

Musing About Ministry: Things You Can Pray for Your Church -- Acts 15
http://musingaboutministry.blogspot.com/2010/12/things-you-can-pray-for-your-church.html
Thursday, December 23, 2010. Things You Can Pray for Your Church - Acts 15. 4 Things You Can Pray for Your Church This Week. 1 That in conflict, the church will listen more to the Holy Spirit than personal preferences. (v. 28). 2 That your church would have a healthy process to deal with inevitable conflict. (v. 2). 3 That your church will know what is worth fighting for and what isn't. (v. 11). 4 That even in unresolved conflict, grace will abound. (see final note below). Conflict in the church. Mark(ed...

Musing About Ministry: January 2009

Wednesday, January 28, 2009. Some Political Thoughts.sort of. Since our quarterly business meeting didn't take very long this evening, I had. A few spare moments to fill. Below are some thoughts I shared with my congregations.only after we closed the business session! I have been disturbed by recent decisions and actions by the new Obama administration. This has caused me to examine my long held position as a political non activist. Should I have been taking a larger role as a cultural warrior? I am stil...

Musing About Ministry: July 2009
http://musingaboutministry.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html
Tuesday, July 14, 2009. A good friend of mine pointed out that my slow fade from the blogger world left me with a negative final word concerning the Great Commission Resurgence. I have to agree that I do not want leave a negative word hanging in cyberspace. I must admit I was impressed with the tone of this year's SBC annual meeting and I did end up voting in favor of the GCR emphasis. All the right things were said. Just remember.I am for the Great Commission. Any other questions Joel? I love my wife, m...

Musing About Ministry: Thoughts on Acts 13
http://musingaboutministry.blogspot.com/2010/12/thoughts-on-acts-13.html
Thursday, December 9, 2010. Thoughts on Acts 13. Wonderful study/discussion on Acts 13 last night. A few highlights. The church in Antioch demonstrated 4 great attributes worth emulating (vv. 1-3). Sensitivity to God's Spirit was the byproduct of a church devoted to worship and fasting. Devotion came first, then the leading of the Spirit to an attuned people.). Sensitivity to God's Spirit gave Paul boldness in his words. Paul spoke these words, because he had traveled this path. Those who rejected Christ...

Musing About Ministry: December 2008
http://musingaboutministry.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html
Wednesday, December 24, 2008. Christmas Message for Local Paper. Merry Christmas….from one small town to another! Apart from the poetic inklings of popular Christmas carols, we do not know exactly what size a town Bethlehem was the night Jesus was born. We do get the distinct impression that it was not a large place. (This is reinforced by the fact we read very little about Bethlehem outside of Scripture, despite its rich history.) Quite likely, it was a small town. But God came there. And God comes here.

Musing About Ministry: November 2008
http://musingaboutministry.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html
Friday, November 28, 2008. The Essence of Ministry. As Paul, along with Silas and Timothy, opens his letter to the Thessalonian church he addresses the minister's call at its simplest and most profound point. You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake. And you became imitators of us and of the Lord." (1 Thessalonians 1:5b-6a). It means our public ministry is born in our private faith. Wednesday, November 26, 2008. 1 Thessalonians 1:2-3 (ESV). May it be so in your ministry. He gave ...
