Raymondale is a neighborhood of 142 homes situated in the gently rolling hills of Falls Church, Virginia. Raymondale was created over the course of several years in the mid-1950’s in seven sections of development. Several different styles of homes were offered to prospective and eager buyers, all of them reflecting the open plan casual and family-friendly attitudes that were so much a part of post-War living. In a part of Fairfax County that is almost completely developed, this is a place where neighbors can come to play with their kids and canine friends or to enjoy some quiet solitude. Friends of Luria Park is a group dedicated to restoring this small but important wild place on Holmes Run. Please check our blog for more information as our plans take shape.

The very persistent precipitation this month has forced the invasive removal brigade to take a long vacation, but now it’s time to get back to work before the heat sets in. We are planning a big effort this weekend at the Holmes Run Drive entrance to finish off the rest of the ivy and wintercreeper. We may even be able to start planting some native shrubs! Silky Dogwood (Cornus amomum). Yes, I want to volunteer!

Friends of Luria Park. Lending nature a hand on Holmes Run. A successful planting party. Weeks of work around the Holmes Run Drive entrance culminated in a four-hour planting party last weekend. Nine volunteers, including one Holmes Run Acres teen who earned community service hours, managed to install 30 shrubs, along with some smaller plants, to replace the invasive wintergreen barberry, Japanese holly and Rose of Sharon that was previously removed. A great group of volunteers put in several hours of hard labor to plant dozens of native tree and shrub seedlings in Luria Park. The picture above shows only some of the neighbors who helped.
