Birds of Raymondale, Falls Church, VA: May 2016

http://raymondalebirds.blogspot.com/2016_05_01_archive.html

Birds of Raymondale, Falls Church, VA. Tuesday, May 17, 2016. Big Monday In Luria Park. At the end of the day we tallied 34 species including some warbler migrants just passing through. Here are the highlights:. A Turkey Vulture noshing on a raccoon carcass on the side of the Raymondale entrance to Luria Park. We certainly need these carrion to keep our world neat and tidy. Amanda noted that their heads are feather free because they don't want to get their nasty meal stuck on their feathers. The Eastern ...

Birds of Raymondale, Falls Church, VA. Thursday, May 28, 2015. This a Wild Turkey hen. These birds, considered by many to be game birds, have excellent eye sight and hearing. They are smart and they are very wary of humans. We are so lucky to have them living near us! If you see one you are very fortunate indeed! It is such a thrill to have our neighborhood school-age children so interested in our natural world! If you have any photos you would like to share please pass them along! Monday, May 11, 2015.

Birds of Raymondale, Falls Church, VA. Monday, July 6, 2015. Excitement on Arnold Lane. Around 8 pm on Monday, July 6th, Sarah, Dustin, and Helen of Add Drive alerted us to a large bird up high in an Arnold Lane tree. Upon initial inspection we thought it may be a bittern, but doubts circled as bitterns are a marshy bird and not usually found high in tree tops. After a little research we concluded that the bird perched up on a snag over Arnold Lane was a juvenile Green Heron. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Friends of Luria Park. Lending nature a hand on Holmes Run. Back to work after the rains. The very persistent precipitation this month has forced the invasive removal brigade to take a long vacation, but now it’s time to get back to work before the heat sets in. We are planning a big effort this weekend at the Holmes Run Drive entrance to finish off the rest of the ivy and wintercreeper. We may even be able to start planting some native shrubs! Silky Dogwood (Cornus amomum). Yes, I want to volunteer!
