Long day travelling through lovely countryside - all worth it to cruise down the sound. Recent snow melting enhanced the waterfalls. Stop at TeAnau by another wonderful lake. We're being lucky with the weather! Particularly in what's probably the wettest place on earth - we were told we'd arrived in a drought - it hadn't rained for 6 hours! Diane and Sheila's Blog. Diane and Sheila's trip to Australia and New Zealand. Thursday, 10 November 2011. The sun came out! This have us an opportunity to take a walk in fresh air up to the glacier. Mount Cook appeared to greet us! Then lunch at the most perfect spot near Lake Matheson. Sheila then took on the challenges of the next journey, negotiating the hairpin bends and single track bridges to Hokitika where we've eaten in Cafe de Paris! Back to Asian culture - heat (30 ), noise, taxi drivers who take you anywhere but where you want to go, and amazing glittering buildings and jewellery. Flood defences everywhere, making entry to shops more of an obstacle course and river transport too scary for us! Most boat quays way under water and the river looks fearsome). Shops galore selling everything you can imagine - even massive statues!

Sorry this is in the wrong order - it seems so long ago that we took this beautiful crossing from South to North Island. This was enhanced by spending £22.50 to go in the adult only lounge - included lunch, drinks and afternoon tea! Especially worth it when 4 school parties boarded the ship! Sheila got very worried about the cows in the lorry - they couldn't see the lovely views!
