There's a whole lot in here. Jul 17, 2013. People Are Still Terrifying. Anyway, a lot of my twenties was spent wrestling with this particular demon, and that struggle was mostly constructive. I've gotten a lot better than I used to be (believe it or not) at talking to people and not just balling up in the corner while making little whining noises in the back of my throat until everyone else leaves the building every time I'm out in public. Go to the store or just not. From: Klamath Falls, OR, USA. You Ar...

There's a whole lot in here. Feb 17, 2014. Between a Doc and a High Place. Lest you start thinking that I only intend to use this blog for posting video game reviews and lots of nothing, I thought I'd share a fun and unexpected adventure I had today. Actually, two such adventures. Imagine my surprise when I woke up instead to find fingers of sunlight streaming in between the blind-slats and a mostly clear, blue sky doing its best non-SAD impression. About it SO THAT THE BLOG WILL KNOW. Basically, if ...

There's a whole lot in here. Sep 18, 2013. Reviews: They Bleed Pixels and Thirty Flights of Loving (PC). Is unsatisfying in the way a bad ice cream sandwich is unsatisfying: while you'd certainly hoped for more, you've still gotten to eat an ice cream sandwich and so you're not going to complain. Too much. NOW 30% MORE OF A DISAPPOINTMENT! Style FPSs. I've logged an embarrassing amount of hours playing Super Double Dragon. Return of the King. And WWF No Mercy! Over the years as a result of b). Unfortunat...

There's a whole lot in here. Jul 31, 2014. Head in the Clouds. By choosing my moment very carefully, that's how. So, I spent a few weeks after Shastina painstakingly watching the weather forecasts, waiting for a dry day with little to no wind to pop up before launching my ULTIMATE SUMMIT ASSAULT. While I was waiting, not wanting to get out of practice, I dayhiked Mount Eddy, the highest peak in the Trinity Wilderness. The summit, per se. But fortunately it didn't last long. Imposing, dire-looking summit.

There's a whole lot in here. Jun 24, 2014. On Top of Shastina, Sort-of Covered With Snow. She's just what she sounds like, a diminutive of "Shasta," and a separate summit resulting from one of the primary four volcanic cones that created the mountain(s) in the first place. Though she looks pretty tiny next to the bulk of the main mountain, her summit is actually higher than Adams' at 12,335 feet. She's the "bump" on the right. And ziploc human feces bag (funnest! Nice trail. Nice hot, sweaty trail. Now, ...

There's a whole lot in here. May 30, 2014. I can tell because I was looking over the notes I'd taken on a student's presentation yesterday and partway down the page I'd apparently just written "Human hive-mind hobo Jesus, mass hallucination, robo-priestess.". It's like Anthony Kiedis took over my body for an instant. Links to this post. From: Klamath Falls, OR, USA. May 29, 2014. Procedural Generation and Emergent Gameplay as Storytelling Devices. There's a whole lot in here. Dec 17, 2013. Review: Dear Esther (PC). So, I finally got around to playing Dear Esther. A game that I've been asked about a number of times during paper presentations on Minecraft. When I first started up the game and realized that all you really did was walk around and look at things, and that you had to walk around really slowly. The same thing happened with Dear Esther. After the brief rough patch at the beginning, I began to sense that I wasn't always. Regarding the poet...

There's a whole lot in here. Aug 13, 2014. On Top of the World (Again). Way out there and way up there. On the rocks, on the snow, scrabbling across a glacier while blowing ice and screaming winds tried to pull me off.well, suffice to say that there's a big difference between reading and doing. Easily on the order of a Mount Adams or maybe even a Mount Rainier.* Since this drive is an unofficial part of my job interview, I ask politely "What mountain is that? Instead of shouting "Whoa! Well, on July 12th...

There's a whole lot in here. Mar 31, 2014. Garfield and Applegate Peaks in the Snow. I say that like it's a bad thing. Having snowshoed about as far as I reasonably could snowshoe in one day around the West Rim Road and climbed all the peaks on that side within my range, I figured this time I would take the East Rim Road, and revisit an old friend (Garfield Peak) while trying to make a new one (Applegate Peak). Right here, actually. The view back down the hill from the cornice deathtrap. First, I strappe...
