INF1240H: Research Methods Dialogues: Studying the Internet

INF1240H: Research Methods Dialogues. Friday, December 3, 2010. Both Hine's and Orgad's articles on studying the Internet were really interesting. The Internet has created a whole new area of research methods. This topic also reminded me of an article I read for 1001 by Miller and Slater called. The Internet: An Ethnographic Approach. INF1240H: Research Methods Dialogues: Hello and goodbye

http://researchmethodsdialogues.blogspot.com/2010/12/hello-and-goodbye.html

INF1240H: Research Methods Dialogues. Sunday, December 5, 2010. Before we turn the lights out on this forum, I want to say thank you to all of you who shared thoughts and observations about this process of designing a research project. So much more there than we knew, wasn't there? Only when I had to make it consistent with all the other parts - methodology, analysis framework - did I appreciate how coherent a concept has to be, to have even potential value. As a research investigation anyway. Excellent,...

PhD Wannabes: November 2010

http://wannabephds.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html

Monday, November 29, 2010. I thoroughly enjoyed Dean Sharpe's lecture today and could completely understand how one could dedicate their career to the ethics of research. While at times I'm sure this position can be rife with conflict, I was impressed by the passion he had for developing policy and protecting the rights of participants. Is it because it is reflective of the innate evil nature of those with power to corrupt those without it? And just as a reminder so that as researchers we never forget th...

Wednesday, September 29, 2010. Reflection on Luker, Chapters 4-5. When the variables and effects that you are studying reside internally within human beings, how do you observe them? Self-report measures are the only option I can think of at present, although I will need to investigate this further. Is this method valid? Monday, September 27, 2010. Comparing Luker and Knight close to the end of the proposal, provided me with an understanding of how much information/knowledge I needed from whom and when. I realize that it has surely been fruitful to experience the different ways of approaching a subject and accepting the various perspectives as that has allowed us to open up our minds and enabled us to see more. But, this documentary really did show his immersion into a completely alien culture, a very bounded and precise culture. He was so immersed that he was able to entirely change the culture forever. Tuesday, October 26, 2010. Ethnography and Game Studies. I also think it is interesting how Boellstorff differentiates between three types of game studies: 1) game cultures, 2) cultures of gaming, and 3) the gaming of cultures. In Boellstorff’s description, each level of gaming study seems to broaden the scope of the game studies field. His description very much convinces me that the field of game studies in a complex, multi-level research area that deserves more attention. Monday, October 25, 2010.

INF 1240: Group 1 Blog

INF 1240: Group 1 Blog. Friday, December 10, 2010. This has been a very interesting experience! I enjoyed learning the different ways to approach research proposals, and how much work goes into writing one! The two required texts were great and aided greatly in the final proposal, especially Luker's "Nitty-Gritty" chapter. The Peer Review Assignment. The proposal.oh the proposal! I thoroughly enjoyed my topic, and if I ever pursue research, I would explore this topic again! Monday, December 6, 2010.

I was able to narrow down my research question so that it focuses only on what is currently being done in literacy programs. I think my actual research question, which ended up not as ...
