The Great Wave: First Aikido Practice of the New Year
http://onlyprinciples.blogspot.com/2011/01/first-aikido-practice-of-new-year.html
Saturday, 15 January 2011. First Aikido Practice of the New Year. Tonight was the first training session after Chrsitmas, and the first I had done in a while because of the snow. We looked mainly at shihonage. Through the use of the ken. And the usual taijutsu. We started off by doing reverse direction cuts - stepping forwards, turning and cutting with the ken. This is essentially shihonage. We then practised the awase. For the second suburi. Which involved intercepting uke. Thrusts into the exercise.

The Great Wave: The "Cut" in Aikiken and Aikijo
http://onlyprinciples.blogspot.com/2011/09/cut-in-aikiken-and-aikijo.html
Tuesday, 20 September 2011. The "Cut" in Aikiken and Aikijo. One question that has been preoccupying me over the past week or so is the following:. Is the standard cut with the ken and the jo (e.g shomenuchi komi with jo and second ken suburi) the same movement? If so, why? So are we doing the same thing, different things, or is it a case of just practising a body movement (for use with taijutsu) regardless of the weapon? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). I practice the Wu-Cheng. Why call the blog ".

The Great Wave: Some Karate - Aikido Crossover
http://onlyprinciples.blogspot.com/2011/01/some-karate-aikido-crossover.html
Tuesday, 25 January 2011. Some Karate - Aikido Crossover. Sensei Mike Robertson was taking the class tonight. It was a fun-filled couple of hours which involved looking at the way in which aikido can help you understand some of moves from karate kata (I think Mike is a yondan. I really like the formality and the structure of the traditional Iwama-style class with its emphasis on solid foundation in the kihon. Technique because I am an extremely(! And to a lesser extent with xingyiquan. And he was very he...

The Great Wave: Only Principles...
http://onlyprinciples.blogspot.com/2009/06/only-principles.html
Saturday, 13 June 2009. Ian Cameron has quoted Cheng Tin Hung saying that, in reality, there are no tai chi. There are only tai chi. I think that this is an important point when one thinks about what happens at the highest level of the art - there are only the foundational principles and the expression of these results in the application. In aikido, this is how I interpret the phrase. The spontaneous execution of the correct technique. So, according to Ian,. Becomes an exercise in free pushing. Steve Mu...

The Great Wave: May 2010
http://onlyprinciples.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html
Monday, 31 May 2010. An interesting night tonight. We started off with the 20 jo. I was pulling the jo back and then turning the hips. This is not very efficient (and consequently not very quick). Both Sensei Steve and Rajiv advised me to use my right hand to pull the jo to the side rather than backwards and to use this movement to start to turn the hips. The result was a much faster movement. Migi nagare gaeshi tsuki. I was making too wide a circling movement with the jo,. Down from the block, . And the...

Monday, 6 September 2010. Tonight we moved into preparations for the various gradings that will take place over the coming months. We started off with some suwari waza. For me this was yokomenuchi ikkyo, nikkyo, sankyo, yonkyo and gokkyo. I still need to relax more when doing the techniques but they are coming on. We then moved on to some. I found this very tricky and kept getting the grip wrong. The last part of the practice looked at. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). I practice the Wu-Cheng. Daniel Toutain ...

The Great Wave: December 2010
http://onlyprinciples.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 21 December 2010. End of Year Aikido. The end of the year pretty much sank under its own weight in snow. I missed two or three classes because the roads out to Aboyne were bad (for my non 4x4 car, at least) and even worse, I missed the Christmas Dinner which was a great party the year before. I managed some classes. Sensei Steve was concentrating on weapons, and he showed me a nice. Which started with the first. We also did some nice. Some things to work on next year. Just getting it right!
