The distraction of the internet | RobyninNZ's Blog

Reflections on life's journey. Laquo; On Writing. Tui on the foreshore. The distraction of the internet. September 14, 2013 by robyninnz. I am sure I am not alone in saying that I find the internet distracting! When I am trying to write, I will find myself thinking I’ll just look up so-and-so, and next thing 20 minutes has gone by, I have lost my original track of thought, and sometimes my spare time for writing has disappeared. Both of those are probably a bit extreme for me. You are right 🙂. Let’...

Reflections on life's journey. Laquo; Tui on the foreshore. October 28, 2013 by robyninnz. 8220;Then Jesus said to his disciples, Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”. Once upon a time I thought that denying myself was about doing what everyone else wanted me to, what everyone else needed. Now I realise that that is the way to dryness, not wholeness. I’m still learning 🙂. Have you had any interaction with this scripture? How do you interpret it?

Reflections on life's journey. Laquo; Here now. August 7, 2013 by robyninnz. I have had a busy few days. Some people connected with my congregation are either very ill or dying. Saturday was one appointment after another. Sunday was preaching, lunching, visiting, then feeding a bunch of young adults at home, watching a movie with them and having some deep chats. It was fun! Writing is a help getting my thoughts down as long as I don’t wrestle too much with word usage. The contemplative has been helpful; ...

Reflections on life's journey. August 5, 2013 by robyninnz. Once there was a man who filmed his vacation. He went flying down the river in his boat. With his video camera to his eye, making. A moving picture of the moving river. Upon which his sleek boat moved swiftly. Toward the end of his vacation. He showed. His vacation to his camera, which pictured it,. Preserving it forever: the river, the trees,. The sky, the light, the bow of his rushing boat. Behind which he stood with his camera. From time to t...

Scot McKnight at Laidlaw. May 8, 2014. Over the last two days I had the opportunity to go to Laidlaw College’s Mission of the Church in the 21st Century conference, which featured Scot McKnight. Credit: http:/ www.laidlaw.ac.nz. Instead of regurgitating my notes, I figured I’d write about my personal response, particularly to McKnight’s content. So, here are some scattered thoughts on a fascinating couple of days. My thoughts are going to assume some familiarity with the above terms and debates, so my ap...

I Was Wrong | Rhett Snell

March 5, 2014. Credit: http:/ journal.media-culture.org.au. In my early 20’s, I had some pretty strong opinions. As I close in on my 30’s, I’m still holding on to some of them. But with others, I’ve either changed my mind, or at least softened a bit. If I could hop in a time machine and take my 20 year old self out for coffee, I’d tell him he was wrong about these 5 things (after I told him to join a gym). 1 Stop looking for silver bullets. 2 Don’t throw the Spirit out with the bathwater. Monthly Archives: December 2013. December 9, 2013. Walking With God Through Pain & Suffering. I remember once being asked by a person with a physical disability, “Did God do this to me? My answer was quick and single-minded. “No! God didn’t do this to you. He grieves with you.”. 8230;As I thought about that conversation though, I wasn’t so sure about my answer. Had I given the right one? How could I know what God had done for certain? Know of God. That in mind,. Walking With God Through Pain and Suffering.

The Things I Wish I’d Preached…. April 9, 2014. I recently heard another preacher suggest keeping a database of the sermons you’ve preached; themes, verses, a short summary. What a great idea! I decided to follow his advice, and compiled a database of my sermons from the last year and a half. It was eye opening. First, it helped me to see my pet subjects. It amazed me how often I came back to two themes: trusting in the character of God, and finding meaning and purpose in Christ. I would like to speak ab...

August 6, 2014. I’ve been wondering about the insatiable desire to say something. Especially in the Christian academic and publishing worlds. If you want to get a PhD, for example, you probably want to discover something new, or at least present a fresh angle. Likewise, if you want to get noticed as an author or academic. Sometimes, it seems to me, this sort of drive leads to the kind of hyperbole. I’m reading Richard B. Hays’. The Moral Vision of the New Testament. 8220;Second, my readings and my propos...

Saturday, August 20, 2011. So this past week was awesome. Here are some of the highlights:. The Hindu, The Indian Express, and another one in Tamil. And those were just the ones that I looked at, I think we were in more. Don't worry, I got multiple copies for everyone to see and I will give you all my autograph when I get home =). While we were there we went to the Buddhist Golden Temple that's in the center of a Monk monastery. This was so incredible! So those were some of my adventures for the week!

Chuseok as far as I can gather is a kind of harvest festival at the end of September and the Koreans do what most people do on holidays and eat everything. There was also and Okktoberfest while we were there. This was slightly odd but ...

Reflections on life's journey. To know Jesus Christ and to make Him known. April 3, 2014 by robyninnz. My question is how to know God’s will in a situation? How to know what He would have us do? How to peel back our own mixed motivations and name them for what they are, while walking forward trusting in His light and reproof? November 29, 2013 by robyninnz. To walk in autumn. Robyn in Peru
So I got home on Thanksgiving Day, and I'm sorry to admit that I've neglected wrapping up my story. Perhaps it was because I wasn't quite ready to see it close. Or maybe it was sheer exhaustion - who knows. But I owe some closure at the very least to those who have checked back in with me and followed my adventure in Peru. Below is the last e-mail I sent after I'd been home for a few weeks. It was the first time that I allowed myself to pause and reflect on what had just happened. Even so, as far as cult...

I need to face what I did to my hair last night. I need to not let this day be a waste. I think he’s thinking about it but probably about other things as well. I know you giv...

Wednesday, June 25, 2008. Posted by Robyn P. Monday, June 16, 2008. Term has finally come to a close, and although the Swedish schedule never really consisted of much class time in the first place – school is now officially out for summer. As such, I managed to lure Alex away from his Dexter’s lab life for a full TWO WEEKS! How hard could it be? I had done some reading and found that instead of taking a 24hour bus between the two cities, you could in fact take a boat to the Greek Island of Lesvos, then a...
