Hoe ingewikkelder de programmatoelichting is, des te teleurstellender blijkt vaak het klinkend resultaat. Het is dan ook een volslagen misvatting te denken dat de artistieke kwaliteit van goede en geïnspireerde composities zich zou laten vangen door scherpzinnige analytische beschouwingen. Er bestaat niet zoiets als de juiste vorm, harmonie of melodie, al zouden de Schenkers onder ons dat graag dicteren en verkondigen sommige recensenten met veel aplomb welke muziek goed of slecht gevonden mag worden.

Reading programme notes at concerts I often find that the more complicated they are, the more disappointing the piece turns out to be. I think it is a great misconception to believe that the artistic quality of good and inspired compositions can be explained through analysis, however meticulous. Although the Schenkers amongst us would like to dictate this, there's no such thing as the right structure, harmony or melody. It seems my music often evokes images and is associated with journeys or trajectories.
