Ruth's JACKET Project

Friday, 14 November 2014. Sewing in the zip and constructing the lining were the finishing touches. Now I can start to wear it, just in time for the colder weather. Wednesday, 12 November 2014. Weaving the collar and edgings. I held the warp in place on the collar base with hair grips while I stitched it in place. When most of the warp was in place, I attached the collar to the neck edge. Finally I attached the edge strands. These ones continue down the front and around the hem. Monday, 27 October 2014.

Ruth's JACKET Project: Weaving the collar and edgings

http://ruthsjacketproject.blogspot.com/2014/11/weaving-collar-and-edgings.html

Wednesday, 12 November 2014. Weaving the collar and edgings. I held the warp in place on the collar base with hair grips while I stitched it in place. When most of the warp was in place, I attached the collar to the neck edge. Finally I attached the edge strands. These ones continue down the front and around the hem. I wove the collar first. What fun to get the brown wool out and see the collar take shape! Then it was time to weave the edgings. Once the weaving was done, I undid all the holding stitches.

Ruth's JACKET Project: May 2014

http://ruthsjacketproject.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html

Saturday, 17 May 2014. My next step is to adjust the paper pattern and scale it up for the weaving form. It'll need to be 25% longer and 20% wider than the final garment to allow for stretch, take-up and shrinkage. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Finishing the latest sparrow. Ruth's JACKET Project: August 2014

http://ruthsjacketproject.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Sunday, 17 August 2014. Starting to weave the under-pocket. At last the body warp is ready. T. He sleeves are attached and are tucked out of the way inside the weaving form. I've begun to weave the under-pockets. The left one has its first section done up to the pocket opening. The right one is just begun. Tuesday, 12 August 2014. Setting in the sleeves. I lined up the marked points on the sleeve with the correct parts of the armhole. The picture shows the buttons and pins I use to anchor the woven e...

Ruth's JACKET Project: July 2014

http://ruthsjacketproject.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 22 July 2014. I found a better way to align the weft rows. I pinned a strip of paper below the working area and used my transparent ruler regularly. I only had to move the paper when I exceeded the length of my ruler (15 cm). Now I have all the pairs of warps tied around their pins with the groups tied loosely. I'll leave them like that while I. Repeat the whole process on the left sleeve. Friday, 18 July 2014. Starting to weave at last! With hardly any unpicking at all. I realized I can use the...

Ruth's JACKET Project: November 2013

http://ruthsjacketproject.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html

Sunday, 10 November 2013. I've been keeping track of spinning, plying and yarn management time. Two big batts of carded wool, about 60 grams, make one bobbin of singles and takes me about 6 hours to spin. When I have three bobbins spun, I ply them together making yarn which is. 13 wraps per inch. One skein of three-ply is about 225 metres of yarn. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Ruth's weaving projects: January 2015

http://ruthsweavingprojects.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

All-in-one-piece weaving projects done with make-it-up-as-I-go-along methods. Sunday, 11 January 2015. Tapestry robin - new and improved. I needed to blend and spin a little bit more of the orange yarn from the dyed combed tops (Shown here with the other colours: white shropshire, and brown and tawny-grey ryeland). I learned a lot from the first robin and used the same pattern to re-create it. The improvements I included were a better formed eye opening, tiny shaping changes, and simplified edges.

All-in-one-piece weaving projects done with make-it-up-as-I-go-along methods. Wednesday, 29 April 2015. To stiffen the tail I made a loop of wire the same shape as the perimeter of the tail feathers. I laid it on the underside of the tail and anchored the ends on the last few stitches of the plastic "spine" inside the back. I attached the wire by. Completely covering it with whip stitches using the light coloured wool. 5 May 2015 at 13:40. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Sparrow weaving off the loom.

Ruth's weaving projects: Sparrow weaving off the loom

http://ruthsweavingprojects.blogspot.com/2015/04/sparrow-weaving-off-loom.html

All-in-one-piece weaving projects done with make-it-up-as-I-go-along methods. Friday, 24 April 2015. Sparrow weaving off the loom. To finish the lower edges of the wings I did a row of soumack stitch. Then I wove the tail and finally the plain light colour. I reinforced the edges with a soumack stitch over the last strand of weft. With contrasting thread I carefully marked some strategic matching points on the edges of the two pieces. Then I turned the weaving over and clipped the holding threads.

All-in-one-piece weaving projects done with make-it-up-as-I-go-along methods. Friday, 24 January 2014. Turquoise hand bag - part 1. I needed a portable longer-term weaving project for two months away from home. I wanted it without pins so that I could work on it during airplane travel. It needed to incorporate colour-and-weave and be woven all-in-one-piece. I dug through my yarn stash for a set of colours. A favourite criss-cross colour-and-weave design. Ruth's weaving projects: Weaving the sparrow's head and wings

http://ruthsweavingprojects.blogspot.com/2015/04/weaving-sparrows-head-and-wings.html

All-in-one-piece weaving projects done with make-it-up-as-I-go-along methods. Tuesday, 14 April 2015. Weaving the sparrow's head and wings. The breast of the sparrow is flat and all one colour so I wove it first to get used to tapestry weaving after not doing it for a while. I did a careful job of the perimeter of the piece, twining the two outer row together. I hope the firmer edge will be easier to stitch to the upper part of the bird when I assemble it. 18 April 2015 at 12:40. Very special ;-).

All-in-one-piece weaving projects done with make-it-up-as-I-go-along methods. Tuesday, 18 February 2014. Lately I been doing Bible study in colour, following a few themes in Ephesians and painting and writing about what I've learned. I sketched how all these colours could go together in a wavy composition. Then I got inspired to try a tiny tapestry based on the sketch. I slipped the tube over a chunk of cardboard and taped the bottom flat. I usually use just cardboard for my weaving form, but for thi...

The starting point was a gamp from The Structure of Weaving. Once I understood this pattern, I charted a triple version of it for a future weaving. All-in-one-piece weaving projects done with make-it-up-as-I-go-along methods. Friday, 28 March 2014. Tapestry embedded in even weave. Years ago at a college weaving class I described to the instructor that I would make an even-weave scarf with a tapestry section near each end. She discouraged me from that combination because the two structures are incompatible. I compromised by doing an embroidered design on that scarf, but I never really gave up on the idea of combining the two structures in one piece.
