Pirate or Fisherman | Sage on sail
http://sageonsail.com/2015/08/05/pirate-or-fisherman
The sailing and land adventures of Tony and Connie. August 5, 2015. Our own Mexican pirate before he went on a raid. Since the international community here is being quite diligent on following up on piracy this particular pirate, named Rio, was captured and spent some time in rehabilitation. The results of his rehabilitation have been very positive and he was recently seen, with his ex-accomplice, in a local fishing tournament in which he won a prize – see picture below. From → Pirates. Ceilydh Set Sail: Robbed! Or why monohulls are better than catamarans
http://maiaaboard.blogspot.com/2015/07/robbed-or-why-monohulls-are-better-than.html
July 21, 2015. Or why monohulls are better than catamarans. Incompetence isn’t a quality I appreciate in most people, but thankfully the thief who boarded our boat last night might want to consider keeping his day job. If he has one. The closest locals to our boat are these guys- two baby herons. There aren't many signs of theft in town- just lots of signs that indicate people take fish into inappropriate locations. None of that happened though. Victoria is a peaceful moderately affluent town. We mounted...
Ceilydh Set Sail: Aground part 3: exotic repairs
http://maiaaboard.blogspot.com/2015/06/aground-part-3-exotic-repairs.html
June 8, 2015. Aground part 3: exotic repairs. Cruising is fixing your boat in exotic places," the oft repeated saying goes. For us it's certainly been true. We've sewn sails in honeymoon hot spots, fixed fibreglass in world class dive destinations and done electrical work in countries better known for their exquisite cuisine. Our travel knowledge runs more to hardware stores and boatyards than boutique shopping and museums. But I've jumped ahead. Dropping a rudder isn't always straightforward—but l...
Ceilydh Set Sail: 05/2015
http://maiaaboard.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
May 31, 2015. Not quite a machine with hot and cold water and a nearby drier—but still a pleasing upgrade from our normal amenities. And with the fees we pay to be here—it's seems silly not to take advantage. Fresh water floats on a layer on top of saltwater in the wells that were dug on the island. Yesterday the laundry well was brimming—but after a few boats did washing the water level dropped and today hauling the bucket up seemed a lot harder. Back they went into the wash tub. On what was once main s...
Ceilydh Set Sail: Settling Into the Seychelles
http://maiaaboard.blogspot.com/2015/07/settling-into-seychelles.html
July 12, 2015. Settling Into the Seychelles. We’ve been on the move again for a year: 8500nm through 10 time zones and six countries. This is a record for us. Even the year we crossed the Pacific we sailed less than 7000nm. Some years we’re happy to hit 1000nm. It seems little wonder then that now we’ve arrived in the Seychelles and dropped our anchor in a sheltered harbour we’ve opted to leave it there. Restaurants and (in Evan’s case) a much anticipated dentist. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
Ceilydh Set Sail: Remote Communication
http://maiaaboard.blogspot.com/2015/06/remote-communication.html
June 22, 2015. We've been out of civilization for almost a month now and while we're almost out of fresh food thanks to our SSB/HAM radio and our new Iridium Go! I've never felt out of touch. While I know some people have the goal of unplugging at sea—I think we're part of a new nomadic breed that wants both remoteness and connectivity. I'm not sure I would have been happy to spend four weeks in a place like Chagos if I knew I'd be completely cut off. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Our family of thr...

April 28, 2015. Such Sadness for a Friend. I am so grateful to be part of a compassionate group of mothers who live on boats and who have jumped in to support Cidnie, Mark, Maura and Sam in any way they can. Some are making cross-country journeys for the funeral, others are coordinating meals, while others are fundraising. And will be there in the future. Promised the family to keep searching until Kitty was found. After other searches were called off, TXEQ kept their equipment in the water. Unfortunatel...
Ceilydh Set Sail: 02/2015
http://maiaaboard.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
February 28, 2015. Bound for Sri Lanka-day 4. Today's stronger winds and bumpy seas have settled into smooth sailing. Usually by the 4th day passages have settled into a comfortable routine; night watch patterns are established, we've caught up on sleep and we're just enjoying the view of an endlessly changing ocean. This time though I was caught off guard by day 3 sea sickness. Nothing about getting this far is easy- but in those bright and quiet moments there's no where else I'd choose to be. This e-ma...
Ceilydh Set Sail: Everyday Life in Exotic Places
http://maiaaboard.blogspot.com/2015/07/everyday-life-in-exotic-places_27.html
July 27, 2015. Everyday Life in Exotic Places. The Seychelles are gorgeous. At least that’s what we hear. We’ve spent the best part of the past four weeks anchored in the same spot, trying to get the dodgy mobile networks to keep us connected to the internet long enough so that we could research dentists, find a pet store and come up with replacement shoes. The best avacados come from one guy in the market- but you need to get there early. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Diane, Evan and Maia. Our fam...

Sage on sail | The sailing and land adventures of Tony and Connie
The sailing and land adventures of Tony and Connie. August 17, 2015. Tags: coco de mer. Anyway, here in the Seychelles the real party is on an island called La Digue. It’s a small and quite touristy haven. Most people get around on bikes and there’s always a secluded beach not far away. Nives, our cruising guest, holding a coco de mer in the UNESCO world heritage site on Praslin Island. Yes, we thought, a fighting chance and our spirits were lifted. However, they were soon dashed as we watched other ...

IF Incoming GPA Predicts Student Grades What’s My Role? Student Grades are Related to a Student’s GPA. Student grades are often strongly related to a student’s prior success as measured by incoming GPA. Is this because these students lack cognitive ability or is it due to undeveloped study skills? Kuh et al. (2008) have argued that student learning is linked to student engagement. So are lower GPA students less engaged? Is there anything I can do as instructor to motivate a change in their behavior?

.Sage and Brown Butter
Friday, December 4, 2009. We just finished the stuffing for our family meal at lunch today, we started serving our once a year turkey soup and I just finished making my yearly batch of jook ( a chinese rice porridge made from turkey bones and any various nos. of ingredients) in homidge to the lunches on cold winter days as I was growing up back East. Hopefully we will have another Sage Thanksgiving and the next one can be enjoyed just as much as this one. Sage on the Coast. Monday, September 14, 2009.
