Lost in Birding

Notes on the road from an Impatient Birder. In the Shadow of James Bond.JAMAICA (27th March). Continuing our tour in Jamaica, we moved out of the coffee-plated highlands, and the Blue Mountains, and onto the lowlands of the north coast. We moved into Port Antonio. Once we had reached the north coast our avian objectives were clear; we were missing only 3 of the 29 endemics on the island by this stage: Jamaican Crow. Known to breed along the north coast. However, on arriving at the site and seeing no larg...

Lost in Birding: August 2013

http://samwoodsbirding.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html

The Spanish Inquisition.SPAIN (22 Aug). Today I left before the extreme Spanish heat picked up, and might dissuade me from birding. I spent the morning with local guide Mick Richardson. An area that I had never birded before, but is a favourite stomping ground of Mick’s, being near his home, close to the town of Loja in the province of Granada, (within the region of Andalucia). The morning kicked off nicely with a butch. Hiding in an agricultural field, and with the first of several. Hawking for insects ...

Lost in Birding: November 2014

http://samwoodsbirding.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

ECUADOR (5th Oct.). It may have been a Sunday but there was no time for lying in; we had a Pinnated Bittern. To find, and so we were back at La Segua. Again (no great hardship there). And just to show that birding has its downs as well as ups, we completely failed on finding a Pinnated Bittern. Chastening to my ego, and ensuring I will be back! Were also confiding both out on the lake, and around the marsh en-route to the dock too. The same bird fodder that had been around the day before was still in...

Lost in Birding: Feeding time in Coffee Country...JAMAICA (25th March)

http://samwoodsbirding.blogspot.com/2015/04/feeding-time-in-coffee-countryjamaica_7.html

Feeding time in Coffee Country.JAMAICA (25th March). A full day was spent in "Coffee Country", AKA the Blue Mountains. Of Jamaica. The Blue Mountains are best known for some of the most expensive, and arguably best, coffee on the planet. However, we were not here for beans, but birds, and the area is brimming with these too. During the morning I got my lifer Caribbean Dove. While another in the group got his lifer Crested Quail-Dove. And also got jaw dropping looks at a male Yellow-shouldered Grassquit.

http://samwoodsbirding.blogspot.com/2011/02/umbrellas-at-their-bestecuador-3rd-feb.html

Umbrellas at their best.ECUADOR 3rd Feb '11. We headed down the trail with light just touching the forest floor as dawn broke. A short way down the low mooing of the Long-wattled Umbrellabird. Drifted through the half-light to our ears. Our pace quickened. More to come from my latest southern soujorn soon. Posted by Sam Woods. I missed these buggers! 6 February 2011 at 06:09. 10 February 2011 at 17:03. Gil Serique: Culture, Windsurf and Wildlife In the Amazon. 20 February 2011 at 16:37. WHO is Sam Woods?

As The Crow Flies - a Hong Kong Birding Blog. Birds in Hong Kong and slightly further afield. Birding in Hong Kong. Mai Po Nature Reserve. Wednesday, 31 December 2014. The one and a half hour I waited there was not pleasant.I dare say my worst birding experience ever. With photographers constantly talking so loudly that I am sure people from the sports field could hear them! Brown-chested Jungle Flycatcher (record shot). I know this will be the best chance for me to finally nail this bogie bird. Mai Po w...

Got news from Captain about a Drongo Cuckoo he heard last week near Lam Tsuen, but I haven't had time to investigate into his finding, which will be the first summer record in HK if accepted! Birding Et Cetera: March 2013

http://birdingetcetera.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html

A chronicle of my birding and ornithological ventures across the globe. Saturday, March 16. NANPA Summit - Jacksonville, FL. Twelve of us, graduate and undergraduate students from across North America, eventually converged on Big Talbot Island, after a series of flight delays and cancellations. For the first part of the week, we would be staying in a house owned by the North Florida Land Trust, and spending all of Wednesday and Thursday shooting people and places on the island. Fraser's Hill - 2/11/2014 - 3/11/2014. It gave us some excellent views for over ten minutes before going back into the cover of the forest. Just as we thought our luck couldn’t get better a flock of Sultan Tits dropped by to a short tree and gave very close views of this canopy dwelling species for our enjoyment. The poor bird was disorient...

The Guiding Light: June 2009

http://oxypogon.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

Adventures in guiding. Leading birding trips around the world. Tuesday, June 16, 2009. I made my first foray into video-making last weekend, with the able assistance (she might claim direction) of my sister Rebecca. We headed down to Montrose harbor and environs and filmed some clips of me, birds, and me talking about birds, and put it all together into a single, semi-coherant video. Enjoy! Wednesday, June 3, 2009. Working the migrant traps. Yes, they are looking at a bird. A Kentucky Warbler, no les...

http://matthewkwanbirding.blogspot.com/p/tai-po-kau-nature-reserve.html

As The Crow Flies - a Hong Kong Birding Blog. Birds in Hong Kong and slightly further afield. Birding in Hong Kong. Mai Po Nature Reserve. The prime site for forest species, birding at Tai Po Kau can be exciting and challenging, however it can also be frustrating at times. As with all forest birding, birds move fast and lights are usually poor. Dense vegetation also make clear views hard to come by. You will need a lot of patience to slowly unravel the birds that take refuge in this forest. A common but ...
