Romantic History: Sewing In the Gussets and Busk

Friday, August 7, 2015. Sewing In the Gussets and Busk. After a quiet and rainy week and a few other sewing projects to finish up I finally had a chance to sit down today and work on my new corset. It wasn't terribly exciting; gussets and busks aren't the most interesting things but for me they are some of the most tedious things to sew. First, I pressed down the seam allowance to the inside of my main fabric pieces. Then, overlapping the gusset slits onto the gussets, pinned them in place. Stitching ext...

Romantic History: Finishing the Corset Shell

Monday, August 10, 2015. Finishing the Corset Shell. I am plodding along at a semi-consistent pace with this corset. I keep telling myself that I need this in two months PLUS EVERYTHING THAT GOES OVER IT, but for some reason I don't feel that panicky must-get-this-done-NOW feeling I used to get when I had a lot to do before an event. Good I guess? But it's not helping increase my productivity. Alas. At last however the deed was accomplished and I ended up with this:. The hip gusset sewn in. Next was to s...

Saturday, November 23, 2013. Green Plaid 1860's Dress for Winter Quarters. Last week we had the opportunity to attend an event at a local park and I was quite excited about going! However, I was sorely disappointed when I tried on my dresses and found that they no longer fit very well - I have lost some weight with this pregnancy so far (due to extreme morning sickness) and decided I needed to make a new gown! The problem was the time - I had about three days in which to get one made! I put a hem facing ...

There was an accompanying pattern in PDF format. I think it was a Tidens Toj pattern, though as I cannot find it on their website any longer perhaps I am mistaken. I made it up today for Anne, in a piece of tan printed cotton slightly less than one yard in quantity. It went together quickly and easily. I think the regency era suits her well.

Romantic History: July 2015

Tuesday, July 28, 2015. When I did 1860's Living History/Civil War Reenacting, one of the most useful garments I made and used was a lightweight wool mantle. Mine was unlined and simply trimmed and I used it a lot. Cool evenings. Cool mornings. Cool days. Over sheer dresses, heavier cotton dresses and wool dresses. It was so versatile. And I wouldn't have to worry about it matching since it is made from the same fabric as the mantle. Here are a few examples of fringe-trimmed mantles of the period:. I am ...

Monday, August 31, 2015. Chemise fits well as does the drawers. The cording in the corset looks cool, but otherwise I don't think it changes the fit very much. It definitely makes the corset feel. More firm but doesn't contribute to shaping. Of course, I expected that. The back has a pretty good gap. Not totally even but I can work on that more when I have more time to properly dress myself. With the layers of drawers and chemise under it, the hip visually looks better. Links to this post. Lovely days wi...

Monday, December 23, 2013. A Hobbit Christmas Dress for Anne. For Christmas Sunday Anne wore her new Christmas dress to church and some what unwilling allowed me to take a few photos to share. She is now 17 months old and standing still for pictures is utterly distasteful to her. Still, we managed a few decent ones. After planning a fluffy princess style dress, I changed my plans last minute to a Hobbit style dress in wools and linens. The reason? The bodice is decorated with rows of antique lace and gre...

Romantic History: Sewing For My Birthday Girl

Saturday, August 1, 2015. Sewing For My Birthday Girl. My sweet little Anne celebrated her third (third! How can that be possible? Birthday last month. While she is definitely quite a girly girl, she is also very much a tomboy. While her brothers gifted her with matchbox cars and barbie dolls she specifically requested a "doctor coat" so I decided to make one for her. So far this is the only picture I have of her wearing it - she's in constant motion so it's hard to get many pictures of her! Mother of fo...

Sunday, March 30, 2014. A New Cover for the Bassinet. I usually co sleep with my babies but a bassinet has been indispensable in the past for non-nighttime napping. Its portable and small enough to put almost anywhere. So it was fun to sew up a new cover that would fit in with nearly every room in the house. All the fabrics came from my stash, so it was a free project. :). The inside is of pale blue cotton with the seam sewn with a dark blue cotton welt. I covered the mattress in blue and white ticking&#...

Thursday, May 5, 2011. A Teeny Little Post Before I Creep Back Into My Blog-free Break. I know I wasn't going to post til after our first CW event, but, then, I wasn't going to sew either. And I did. I just want to thank you all so much for your advice, suggestions and encouragement. What great cheer leaders you all are! Now I feel like I can take a deep breath and move on. You all are AWESOME. He exclaimed, horrified. Um, David, they're. May 5, 2011 at 7:38 PM. Its too pretty to just let sit in my close...
